@Kc Jones, I agree that one is mind blowing. I guess this one has that more subtle edge to it, and it tells a story and paints a picture and is almost like a classic, art film while also being a hip hop music video.
The streetlight reflects off the urine on the ground / which reflects off the hamburger sign that turns round /which reflects off the chrome of the BMW / which reflects off the fact that I'm broke/ so what the hell else is new Love those rhymes and (like chuckdeezee said)storytelling ability. Can't get enough!
It's a story. All the other verses literally set the last verse up. It's like saying the last 15 minutes of a movie were incredible. Like yeah, but they needed the previous 1.5 hour set up to be that dope
I am just now discovering The Coup. I had heard some of their songs like once before and liked them, but now I'm seeing how ingenious they are. They have social commentary, beats and they're hood. Usually you only get one or 2 of those at a time.
this brother Boots Riley was the truth all the way back in 92 son. He bout to blow yall minds with that new movie Sorry To Bother You. Bro been deep and official af!
@BxxDxx Hoodoo totally disagree, his stories have messages the masses aren't ready to receive because they're not tuned in. His messages come from the spirit world; Hollywood is devoid of spirit. his lyrical portfolio was ahead of its time and you've only see one movie from him so far. He's also not fucking children. Assertion rejected. When he makes a movie where black males are wearing dresses for no substantially plot-relevant reason, then u can have that conversation. making a movie in hollywood when u come from HIPHOP doesn't make u a sellout unless u make a movie intended to sell-out. relax bub you haven't seen his whole bag yet
@@theothertonydutch to the uninitiated who have no business commenting on things of which they clearly demonstrate a superficial overstanding, yes. HIPHOP belongs to artists like me and Boots who kept its authenticity intact as we practiced its disciplines over the years. There can be no so-called sell-out in such energy fields. I don’t expect laypeople of the West who haven’t studied and lived HIPHOP culture in its purest formats and presentations to grasp a thing I’ve said. So you can walk out the gate here and close it behind you bub. Next
Damn the credits of this video is straight up a who's who of Bay rap at the time. E-40's sister Suga T (part of The Click, had that verse on the classic Sprinkle Me) is the hamburger girl. I couldn't make out their faces but the credits have E-40 and The Click at the stairs scene and Jamal Diggs aka J Diggs, who got caught up robbing banks with Mac Dre, at the shell game scene, which is pretty dope because this was around the time those two Vallejo camps (Crest side and Hill side) started feuding. Only one missing is Pac which is crazy cuz this would have been exactly at his intersection when this video came out.
This is the GREATEST descriptive song in Hip-Hop!!! The Coup was soooo slept on. People still are not ready for this type of message. What a cryin' shame. WAKE UP!!!!!
I can explain gentrification better than this song does... Black people want their own racial ethnostates in America, so they don't want any other races moving into what they've deemed as "their" neighborhoods and "their" communities (despite the vast majority of them owning no land or houses in those areas), even though every violent ghetto that has experienced gentrification has been vastly improved in every possible way. There, that about sums it up. Of course, if white people want their own ethnostates and they bitched and played the victim every time any other race moved into "their" neighborhoods (where they DO own most of the houses and land), that would be considered extremely racist, right? But blacks have enjoyed more racial privilege than anyone else in America for the past 30+ years, so their spoiled brat attitudes of entitlement are to be expected.
Interesting. Always wondered who he was. Please tell us more. What's his name? is he an actor? how did he get that role? More importantly, how did he feel about reciting the lines in the song and how did he memorize and stay on rhythym? He nailed it!
Why is the music video missing a whole verse? After Boots grabs the fast food, but before he goes into the party, he meets his cousin who was working inside. "I use peoples before they use me Cause you could get got by an Uzi over an OZ That's what an OG told me Gots to find someplace warm and cozy to eat the vittles that I just got Came to an underground parking lot "This place is good as any, fuck, it's all good" Walked in, found a car, hopped and sat up on the hood Ate my burger, threw back my cola Somebody said "hey"; it was a rent-a-pig, I thought it was a roller "Want me to call the cops?" I don't want them to see me Looked down and saw that I was sitting on a Lamborghini It was Rollses, Ferraris and Jags by the dozen A building door opened; damn, it was my cousin Getting off of work, dressed up, no lie Tux, cumberbund and a black bow tie I was like "hey!" ("Who is it?") "me" ("Oh, what's up man, I just quit this company They're hella racist and the pay was too low") I said "right, what was up in there though?" ("A party with rich motherfuckas, I don't know the situation I know they got cabbage, owning corporations IBM, Chrysler and shit is what they said") Just then a light bulb went off in my head "They be thinking all black folks is resembling Give me your tux and I'll do some pocket-swindling" Finna change in the bathroom and not freeze off my nuts Lets take a short break while I get into this tux"
Happen to have a great independent radio station here that played the full version today. Noticed a whole section of the song I hadn't heard before so when I got home I looked this video up. I've been listening to the shortened version this whole time!
Every fan of this music HAS GOT to see Sorry To Bother You. Its pretty much all of his music and ideas transformed into a visually stunning, surreal film. He's a visionary and i love his music, but i hope he plans on making more movies. Because thats where he really shines.
The video cuts out the interim section that leads to Boots (the lumpenproletariat) ending up as a waiter at the event of the ruling class. Regardless, the juxtaposition presentation between the impoverished hustling to eat and the oligarchs hustling to rip whatever they can away from democracy is something incredibly informative and prescient. Americans are only now starting to wakeup to how corrupt our system is, whereas Boots (through pure trauma) knew this years ago.
Conscious rap isn't gone! There are thousands of artists out there and we now have the internet to check them all out. Do some research and you'll find something you like.

This is true social commentary about how as much as one man may have control over his life and believe to be in power there are those in charge of the structure and larger circle which determines the smaller circle individuals without power can operate in, as freely as they want but always within the smaller circle.
yes yes yes, i'm glad i just found this even though it might be a little late. Better be late than never, so yeah, im gonna get that album, i like the vibe of the track. Peace.

caught these dudes live last night been a listener since 99' serious group...they played a couple new joints some older tracks fat cat was the last song...would have been a bigga fish if Riley spit the last verse...still dope though none the less...kicked it up tempo...wow wow ...
I always felt the Coup were under appreciated.
No credit given to em when The Blackout came out. I concur

arguably one of the best hip hop music videos ever made
the Pharcyde - Drop is still to me the best hip hop music video ever
@Kc Jones, I agree that one is mind blowing. I guess this one has that more subtle edge to it, and it tells a story and paints a picture and is almost like a classic, art film while also being a hip hop music video.
Slick Rick did this a lot with his story telling raps.
I was just thinking that too (Drop). Best video, not sure about that but definitely one of the most underrated hip-hop songs of all time.
Rupert Common Top 20 for sure.

I was in the area during that time, it's been going on for a long time.
The most consistent west coast group when it comes to serving up non skip albums....mad overlooked crew!!!
Rest In Peace Pam...One my fav groups without doubt
It may not be as popular or recognized as others, but if I had to choose a song that's "the most Oakland", this would be my unapologetic nominee.
