Only today did I hear about The Coup (I'm an old guy). "The Guillotine," "Fat Cats and Bigga Fish," and this one are my first 3 songs by this group, read the lyrics and watched the videos. This is amazing music! The stories they tell are SO moving and their message is so important. Thanks!
it's called the art of storytellin..a lost hip hop artform and this was one of 90's top examples of how you do it and one of the greatest examples of that art overall. and by far the greatest real hip hop tune of that kind
Gives me goosebumps every time...Reality can be harsh sometimes.. Heard this on college radio when it first came out i want to say late 90's early 2000's...
"This trip is over / we ain't finna ride on/ this is for my mental and my momma that I cried on/ Microsoft mofo let bygones be bygones/ but since I'm Macintosh I'm gonna double click your icon" - boots riley
I saw the video when it was uploaded. And remember wondering the song actually had a video. One of my favourite tracks ever. Peace to The Coup and Boots Riley. RIP Pam.
Absolutely brilliant lyrics. Not sure what made me think of this song...hadn't heard it in 20 years, probably. But the power of the narrative lives on...and on....and on.....
this is one of my favorite songs regardless i never knew there was a video for it till yesterday... i doubt this is a true story or he would have just snitched on himself... he's just a good storyteller
Bruh "Jesus" in this video is black. He's hella light skinned but he is black, I can't remember his name but I've seen the actor in movies before. This song has nothing to do with race it's just a story about getting revenge for his mom...
His name is roger played in such movies as alot of spike Lee joints one of my personal fav he got game he played a character named showtime or hard time I think iam not completely sure I just poped a xanee stick and a enjoying my morning blunt😂😂🤷🏾♂️
*All I’m getting from this song is…Jesus getting killed twice: first from the Romans in 30 AC after being betrayed by his 12 disciples especially Judas… and the 2nd time in 1979 as a pimp in Oakland who had it coming to him.*
Ive been banging this song for over a year now. It's hits home with me. As I have two sons who never knew me. But In my defense? both women lied to there son's and lied to me and lied to everybody else. they said another man was the father. It just goes to show you? what ever game your in. legit or on the other side? roll with the realness, keep it 100 and flow with respect.. Im no longer a baller, but im still a few feet of the curb!
@FunkFight1 His speech gets lost in the beats so I didn't follow the story until I read the lyrics. Thats definitely one of the deepest hip hop songs I've ever heard, probably the deepest. Thats right up there with Immortal Techniques Dance with the Devil. Most people won't follow the lyrics and will just see a black dude trusting, and then getting horribly betrayed by a white dude. That being said, it would obviously be unfair to deny Boots the right to tell his story.
Whatever he is I found it sad that a story expressing the realest trust ever seen in a popular music video between a black man and a man indistinguishable from a white/hispanic man ended in betrayal and murder. As I said, if its a true story its not like you can blame boots. I understand the story being told isn't focused on race.
Some of the brilliant words ever spoken. Love this it is a Master piece.
"Since I'm Mac Intosh ima double click your icon" 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

it's called the art of storytellin..a lost hip hop artform and this was one of 90's top examples of how you do it and one of the greatest examples of that art overall. and by far the greatest real hip hop tune of that kind
Boots was so good at songs like this. From Fat Cats and Bigga Fish all the way to a newer one like We've Got a Lot to Teach You, Cassius Green
yeah let's make this an "Art of Storytellin" topic and let me ad "Eightball - Time (Suave House 1998)
@@UpzydeDown Ight cool. Scarface -I seen a man die & Snoop - Doggz gonna get ya.
And off course: Slick Rick - Children's Story.
@@socunnomumma Eightball - The artist pays the prize
@@socunnomumma Snoop copied that song nearly word for word, props to KRS/BDP for that tale!
Gives me goosebumps every time...Reality can be harsh sometimes..

agreed reality is a bitch. Sorta reminds me of Too Short
I hear a little more of the story each time. This is absolutely tragic and beautiful
Facts.
"This trip is over / we ain't finna ride on/ this is for my mental and my momma that I cried on/ Microsoft mofo let bygones be bygones/ but since I'm Macintosh I'm gonna double click your icon" - boots riley

The sample of the woman’s voice along with the drums is my favourite thing about this song which I am going to add to my song list.
this is one of my favorite songs regardless i never knew there was a video for it till yesterday... i doubt this is a true story or he would have just snitched on himself... he's just a good storyteller
Boots Riley is such a great storyteller rapper, love the "Angel Dust" sample by Gil Scott-Heron
And the Parliament "Swing Down Sweet Chariot" live in Oakland sample.

btw that's the actor who played the cop in Get On The Bus
He's one of those actors you recognize but don't know the name of. No disrespect to the man.
Legend.
Plot twist: the real villain in this song is the Grenada. Some cars can make you do evil things.
E40 vibes
🙏🏽
Jesus the pimp is the type that will steal from his prostitutes and then spend that money on legal fees. He goes from pimping to getting pimped.
Incredible lyrics and storytelling as only Boots knows how to craft.
Absolute classic 😶🌫️

@KurtG85 I don't understand what you're talking about. Have you actually listened to the lyrics? What "race relations"?
Buenisimo el tema, es bastante pegadizo, tiene un beat de la puta madre, y una historia interesante..
That song dope
Shit is soooooo underrated!
@crackbxtswozniecki2 Yeah!, si que lo es.
Boots is such a cool dude. I'm tellin' you add him on FB or Insta if he has one. He's the type to reply
