Hey Seth, I started watching your videos back in March of 2020 and over the course of almost 2 years you’ve helped me find my passion for running again. NYC will be my 2nd marathon this year and I couldn’t have done it without you and this community. Thank you for motivating us past runners who thought they had already thrown in the towel. Much love💪
Just had a conversation with another person on UA-cam about how a lot of people actually run PR’s in “fun run” races within 2-3 weeks after a peak race because they take a few days off, get a lot of easy miles in, and take a real taper because they’re not stressed and trying to crank in 400’s a couple days before it. The prime example is high schoolers at a Turkey Trot
I did see you running, I was doing a bike lead for the women's half-marathon, probably around mild 2 or 3 I yelled hi Seth and you give me a thumbs up as you passed us.
It was the Canadian 10k Champs on the waterfront! First big in-person race in Canada since the pandemic started! I ran 31:11 for a nice PB! 😍 Keep up the grind Seth!!
QD: Just ran the Atlantic City Marathon this past Sunday. I got the BQ that I've been working on all year. My running story is like many others. Started running end of March 2020 because of the pandemic. I was always into pickup soccer and basketball and would run 3-10mi a week to keep in shape. I've been training seriously for a marathon since Feb 2021. Originally was suppose to run the Delaware Marathon but it got canceled the week of the race and I ended up running the half marathon (did a respectable time of 1:30:50 and that's with pacing friend for the first half). Decided to run my first marathon on 9/12 called 'Chasing the Unicorn'. I ran it unprepared with poor tapering, no sleep the night before due to anxiety and bathroom issues the night before. Ran the first half too fast in 1:35 and the next half in 2:05 too to massive cramping (stopped 18 times!) for a disappointing total time of 3:40. The redemption marathon was 2 days ago (10/17). Ran with a friend/coach and had very different experience. Tapered properly, eat properly, slept properly and paced properly. Finished it out in 3:12:36, which is a BQ for my age group. Hopefully the field size for Boston is larger so the cut off won't be like this year (7:47). So you can say my first marathon was soft of a tune-up race because it was 5 weeks before the current race. I'm looking forward to next year and hopefully seeing more improvments.
Toronto waterfront Marathon was an in person 10k and all other events were virtual. It was amazing to be back racing in person with a new PB! My cousin was running his first half marathon in Detroit with you Seth. Great recap
QOD: About 3 weeks out, I survey my body, especially my legs and determine how I feel. I am running the Cleveland Marathon this coming Sunday. 2.5 weeks ago, my legs felt as if they were about to fall off (more than anticipated soreness). I decided then to pivot to a “hard taper” and focus more on resting than mileage. I feel a lot better now and my legs feel like they can handle a marathon. Part of the pivot was actively giving myself permission to really cut down on my mileage with the goal of a strong marathon race.
8 miles at a 9:37 pace is a hard-effort long run for me :D Congrats on the 6th place. Amazing result for a tune up race. I hope to see you in NYC in the group run or in the fluid station at mile 8, where'll be volunteering.
Seth, great meeting you after the race! Please think about coming back when it is international again. The view going over the bridge is awesome and the folks on the Canadian side are great. The tunnel is pretty wild too. 😁
First marathon was Detroit in 1991. Finished somewhere around 45th place.. My time would have been 11th this year. We started in Canada in 91 and ran through the tunnel around 10k.
Great question. I due to Covid-19 delays raced two Ironman in 4 weeks end of summer. First end of august in Vichy (France). I ended ended up running my best marathon as an M50 age grouper in 3:24. 4 weeks later after serious taper (but also looong bike) (no hiit run… no no no) i raced my best ever ironman in Italy. Running a 3:20 marathon and 9:43 IM. Qualified for Kona after 12y of racing. race hard 4 weeks before a-race, recover and than race a-race.
Seth you're my idol man despite of being a husband and a father you're always killing it blessings for you and your family I have the same type of life of being a husband and father, I just did my first marathon at Chicago finished at 3:37 thanks for sharing all the knowledge and your honesty man thanks a lot hope to meet you one day
QD: I never used tune up races in years past in my “old school” days of running…a.k.a my fast days 😂. The tune up is a new tool I learned from this channel when I started following back in the summer of 2019. I typically use the tune up to test my race strategy at a shorter distance to base how my body responds and if I need to adjust anything over the next few weeks before the peak race.
Thanks for your videos Seth. Really enjoy the mix of topics and content. Some feedback from my four-year-old who also likes your videos: I want to see more footage of him running and less talking.
7:00 I did not race the Detroit Half Marathon this year, I was doing the bike lead for the women's half marathon. But yes you're completely right, the course normally for the international and even us half marathons are not this twisty. And you were right it was really dark, and I had a headlight on my bike the first speed bump we encounter caught me by surprise.
Yeah! Gotta run into Canada! The old Skylon marathon in the 70s started in Niagara Falls, New York state and crossed the bridge into Niagara Falls Ontario and finish there. I think it still does but is simply called the Niagara marathon now. I recall as a kid, being totally enthralled with the concept of crossing international borders when my dad ran Skylon marathon. Racing in Detroit, you cross into Windsor Ontario! You gotta do it!
In the past I had the chance to do some tune up race and it served me well for the race day, especially when the tune up was a bit hilly so I knew I had to save my legs for the last part. This year no chance to run a tune up race but getting confidence from my long runs and speed workouts. Can´t wait for my marathon this Sunday. Let´see if the training pays off :)
So bummed I missed you were running Detroit I would have said Hi! I'm local and volunteered this year. HIGHLY recommend doing the International version if they bring it back, it is an amazing experience to cross over the Ambassador bridge and come back through the tunnel (1 mile underwater by the way). So glad you enjoyed it! Best wishes in NY.
Running my first NYCM this year...finally!! Hope I can catch the details of the Friday morning Run...would love to join you and the group for a few miles. Hope I can keep up!!!! 🙊
One of my good friends and my mentor as I was a freshman is in the thumbnail. He’s wearing the blue USA singlet. It’s cool to see him doing well still.
In 2019 I was taking the SAT the day you did the group run, but I did get to see you race. Now it's 2021 and I'm studying abroad in London, so I won't be available AGAIN for the NYC group run, or to see you race my home marathon! Maybe in a couple years, I'll be home when you are racing NYC for the third time 💪💪💪.
I admire how your knees flex slightly before the stance phase, but barely at all flex more during the stance phase. That is what I want !!! Need to get my glutes working!
I´m a new adoptee of the "tune-up" race, so my answer will have to be suspended till it´s practiced. That said, I love the idea and can´t wait to implement! Well-done Seth!
"Trust The Taper" would make a great temporary tattoo. My tune-up half marathon before my marathon helped build my confidence in the training cycle. I purposely ran it with someone else so we could talk the entire race and only kicked up the pace for the last 1.5 miles. Just missed my previous PR on that course by a minute which showed how much stronger I had become as a runner.
QD: I did a tune up half marathon where I set a PR 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately I developed a little niggle in one of my ankles that has forced me to take about a week off completely so I am ready for race day, which is the Colorado Marathon on Sunday! Ankle is feeling great now but the lack of running has me nervous, even though my fitness was the best it's been a couple short weeks ago. Hope it goes well! Can't wait for NY Seth!
QOD: That tune-up race is always a great gauge for how the legs are feeling and for me it is also my most important test for nutrition, race day gear, and my race goal time. If the legs are feeling great I'll throw one more hard workout in and if not, listen to the body and taper a little more aggressively. Great tip on the sunrise (and sunset if that applies to your race) ESPECIALLY when you are traveling for a race. BTW, Both my watch and Strava said 60ft of gain for the half in Detroit!
Seth the one year I opted out of running my local race (Detroit) you showed up. I had to cancel due to course change. It is 10x better doing the real course. I promise. Hope you return, and I finally get a chance to see you kicking tail. Great race nonetheless sir.
Detroit 21 was my 2nd marathon (Detroit 20 virtual was first). The coarse was great and took us past a lot of great sights. The bridge and tunnel are extremely unique and humbling parts of the race. A must experience!
Seth if you don’t get any tattoos, you should at least make them into t shirts! Would love a “Trust the taper” or “pivoting” T with the new DGR logo! Discerning, loosey goosey, could be some others!
Trust the taper…Sound like t-shirt material Seth!! QD: big believer in the taper 2 week before the race. Never really done a tune up race but go for a « race type » effort half the distance/vert 3-4 weeks out to gauge the fitness.
Good thing your not running Saturday morning in Central Park due to the 5K that will be taking place...unless you go super early. Hope to see you out there for the NYC Marathon!
QD, my IT band decided to act up during my 10 miler tune up last weekend. Tried to adjust to take the pressure off that (left) leg and ended up tweaking my right calf as well SO, my buildup to the Thanksgiving half has changed drastically. No running, doing stretching and other exercises as well as foam rolling , icing and other rehab activities this week. Hoping to get back out next week. Gotta admit, I’m pretty down about it .
Just did the tune up race on 10/17. Did a small taper going in to the half and it payed off big time with a 16min PR. Major takeaway from that race, going in to the big-taper beginning on 11/15 is that a well prepared taper makes a huge difference in performance. Don't skip an opportunity to capture lightning in a bottle.
Seth, when I ran Detroit in 2018 I wore my sunglasses and ended up not seeing Canada as it was virtually pitch black during that section of the race. I like to race in sunglasses as they help me focus and block out distractions but also didn't want to wear them on my head for fear of losing them. It's more of a mental thing, but I didn't mean to block out our neighbors to the north! Ironically, I also lost my sunglasses after the race.
I did the Detroit marathon a few years ago, we entered into Canada. It was fun but some folks were stopped by security to check for weapons. I remember that part feeling kind of tedious because people were stopped at random.
While you were talking about cadence, started a watch and ran it for 15 seconds, in that time you took 49 steps for a rate of 196 per minute, watch was right on.
I also do not taper. I ran my best times when on during my high volume training periods. I feel stronger during those times so thats when I give my PBs a challenge.
QD: Tune up for NYC was a half marathon in Easthampton MA which was SLUGGISH. My takeaways were 1) be prepared to change plans early if needed, and more to the point on TAPER, 2) don't do a strength workout two days before the race! Live and learn.
@@SethJamesDeMoor the tunnel can be brutal. Stale air and can overheat you. But it is cool to think you are running under the river from Canada back to the US. Also the Bridge is no joke, luckily it was early, for a mountain runner it shouldn't be a problem but it is a good incline there for a mile long.
Hey Seth, thanks for your great videos and analysis and combining your family life!!! Very refreshing, motivating and informative. Question: I'm a sprinter with occasional 3K, max 5K runs. I'm pondering inserting the endorphin Speed (2), New Balance More V3 or endorphin Shift, Vaporfly 3 for running a 3K/5K on a flat trail or breaking it up in 14x400m intervals on a track. Which one do you recommend and why? I already have the Asics Novablast and Nike Vaporfly 2 in the rotation. I'm looking for a shoe to replace the vaporfly 2 that returns energy well and is also provides support. Comment for your improving leg strength: try doing weighted lunges in the gym after interval training on the track. Also, maybe increase the pace on your track workouts. On the lunges, get all the way on your toes and then step out, like an overstride. All the best in New York and look forward to hearing from you!
Anytime I want a good reminder that elite level runners are built different than I am, I see a video like this and see that he could fit inside his suitcase.
Hi Seth, 2 video ideas, can't remember if you have touched on these topics much recently, if at all. Of course, you have talked about some aspects, like the Rincons being a good shoe for price, but I think compiling it all into the one video would be a great idea. How to run on a budget? If you have x amount of money to spend lets say in a year, what are your must haves in terms of gear. What shoes would you get? How many pairs of clothes? etc. You could change the budget slightly through the video or detail your priorities. I think this would be very helpful to a lot of us who can't afford a lot of the recovery gear, the clothing, the shoes etc. In terms of budgets I assume you could start basline ~ $100-200 and then work your way up, maybe maxing out at $1000. I am not too sure about the values that you think would be appropriate, I am Australian. Your supporting workout routine. How much are you lifting after those easy runs, for how long, how many reps, what's the frequency? How are working the core, same questions as above. And of course, the all important LEGS. Loving the daily vlogs, cheers.
QD: I used the GNR (UK) as a tune up 3 weeks before my marathon, and maybe give a bit much with it being a PR on that course, but coming out the Covid lockdown era and races coming back we all had to give it a go !! such a great half marathon. And I don't think it retracted from my marathon performance a few weeks later.
James, one thing I notice about the African runners is that they keep their arms very tight to their chests and not swing too much. I wonder if that helps them maintain their forward momentum and be more efficient?
Seth, firstly amazing effort in the HM! You should get those fast legs over to the UK at some point for a race (I can help you film if that persuades you 😂 Would love to come along and join in on a group run one day!
I like to walk a little the day before race day. My last marathon I just sat in bed the day before and took it easy and didn't think I felt as good compared to the past.
For runners who wanna track cadence but don’t have a foot pod or watch that can do it, track how many times your left foot strikes the ground in 20 seconds while running, then multiply by 6. Cadence is usually measure in both feet and over the minute. For the time you were talking about cadence @Seth, you were on the screen for over 20 seconds so I tried to count and I think I saw 32. So mid to low 190 doesn’t seem far fetched.
Sad to hear the group run for NYC is Friday instead of Saturday, but completely understand. I wont get in to NYC until Friday evening. Cheers friends, enjoy.
Hi Seth, Keep doing the great work with the videos👍👏I wonder what is Your thoughts about that the US borders open up the day AFTER New York Marathon and it use to be about 48% foreigners in the race? Best regards Frank 🇳🇴
I have been training for the Philadelphia marathon for about 2 months now and over the weekend I got this really bad pain in my hip that I tried to run through and now it has spread down my IT band. I was planning on these next two weeks being my peak distance at 70 miles but now it hurts to even walk. Any advice for getting to my start line in November 21 healthy but with as much training as possible. At a loss of what to do for these next few weeks.
Let your glasses on your head, don't have to worry about it too much. But for the tunnel, you should advice to do what you didn't: drive the course 48 hours before, do it over and over again with Google Street view... Also, for you "everything for a good taper" I would like to suggest a professional massage 10-15 days prior to the race, followed by a pressotherapy session (even if you never tried it before).
Hey Seth, I started watching your videos back in March of 2020 and over the course of almost 2 years you’ve helped me find my passion for running again. Awesome Mitch!! Thanks for sharing a bit of your story with us
Hey Seth, I counted 100 paces between 6:54 andd 7:26 in your last video. That's 32 seconds so 188 paces/minute cadence.
You’re amazing Albert, thanks!!
Danm nice counting

Does the audio sound muffled and higher pitch than usual or am I having speaker issues
Sounded ok to me
Enjoy the daily vlogs Seth but we need more shoe reviews
Good morning from Arizona. 57 degrees and full moon
Congrats great time
QD: I used the GNR (UK) as a tune up 3 weeks before my marathon, and maybe give a bit much with it being a PR on that course, but coming out the Covid lockdown era and races coming back we all had to give it a go !! such a great half marathon. And I don't think it retracted from my marathon performance a few weeks later.
James, one thing I notice about the African runners is that they keep their arms very tight to their chests and not swing too much. I wonder if that helps them maintain their forward momentum and be more efficient?
Should’ve came to Columbus Ohio! It was a fast day and Luis Orta was there. You need to come here next year!
Great job Seth! Just wondering why you went for the og Next% instead of the 2’s?
they're fresher!
Nice job 👍
Sad to hear the group run for NYC is Friday instead of Saturday, but completely understand. I wont get in to NYC until Friday evening. Cheers friends, enjoy.
Seth every training block: "If I get a tattoo...."
Also Seth: "Tattoos? Not on my book."
Good luck with taper and NYC
Is there a link to that orange massage gun??
Why not do those extras at the start of your taper? Especially sleep. Sleep is a superpower.
Seth, fun fact, Windsor Canada is actually south of Detroit!
66th! 9:30 a mile… that’s like when Superman gave up his powers for Lois… but don’t be fooled NYC…. Whatya gonna do when DGRamania runs wild on you?!
What massage gun do you use Seth? Thanks from a new runner
Houston half is a good one to PR
So after running the half in the next % 2 will you be wearing these for your marathon?
What an athlete. I've been tapering for my whole life. Ha
Really want Seth to get an old English “Trust The Taper” neck tattoo.
Seth, I was wondering what does 140 miles of running translate into time spent running ?
Congrats btw 💪
Over a bridge and through a tunnel - run a mile underwater.
Seth do you have any plans to run in England 🏴
Denver group run soon?
Tokyo Marathon 2018 had a very bad race, and 2 weeks later in New York Half I had my PR. I think it was stress.
I noticed on your stats, the race may have been a little long(13.3). You may well have run a 1:08 for 13.1😀.
Hi, I am just wondering have you done the Honolulu Marathon or the Kaui Marathon?
Dude, that’s another T-shirt:
Trust the taper!
