    This is the BEST video for framing I’ve ever seen. ESPECIALLY for flat Ampersand boards. So many economical options with Sandra sharing her sources.

      Thanks for watching. I use flat panels from Ampersand. You can find them online at Blick or Jerry's . Sometimes I will use MDF.

    I have been learning so much from your teachings and am glad I found you! Do you have any suggestions for framing a round artwork? I paint on old vinyl record albums so I can recycle and save them from the landfill. I mostly convert to clocks so I have the hanger hook built in. I would like to make some without the clock and would like to place in a frame. The record is 12x12 round so I haven’t found anything that seems like it will work. Ideally I would like a frame that includes glass. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @SandraDuranWilson
      @SandraDuranWilson  4 роки тому

      I have seen shadow box frames at Michael's and other frame shops. It would be a square frame but it would be protected behind glass.
      The other idea is to glue the pieces of wood onto the back and hang from that like I showed in the video. It would have it stand away from the wall.
      The third idea is to mount it onto a piece of wood and have someone cut a round piece of plexiglas or use a square and offset it so the plexi stands away from the record.

    Thanks for such an informative video! Sandra, do you recommend sealing a mixed media piece with varnish?

    • @SandraDuranWilson
      @SandraDuranWilson  4 роки тому +1

      You are so welcome. Depending on what materials I use in my mixed media piece I may simply seal with acrylic gloss or matte medium, but when there are heavy textures I will use a spray varnish.

    Instead of gluing the panels in, you can stick adhesive velcro to the frame and the panel and just pop the art in and out if you want to swap frames.

    • @SandraDuranWilson
      @SandraDuranWilson  3 роки тому

      Thanks Pam. I have tried that but the overlap is very small. I have some new heavy duty velcro and I am going to give it a try and will let you know. Thanks for watching.

    I too like to work on flat panels and investigated all the DIY framing options. I want the float effect but Ampersand was too pricey for me. I called canvas place and the guy told me not to use the floater frames because I want the panels flush with frame, not dropped down as you’ve shown. I see they also have unfinished STRIP frames with 5/16” rabbet (which is perfect for 1/4” panels)....except states that there is no space between panel and frame, ie they wouldn’t “float.”. I’m considering ordering anyway because I prefer only a very small gap and I’m thinking my 12x12 panels are probably a little less than that, in which case it might work just right. Soooo what I would love to see you demonstrate is the 5/16” rabbet strip frame from canvas place with your flat panel...in the unfinished Doug fir so I could see the color! Thanks for your consideration of this request!

    • @SandraDuranWilson
      @SandraDuranWilson  4 роки тому

      It sounds like the strip frames will work for you. I like the frame to extend beyond the painting slightly in order to protect the piece. Also the strip frames need to be finished which can work nicely. One thing I did before Canvas Place came out with the panel frames is I would glue the flat panel onto black foam core and mount it into their frames. This would put the painting flush with the frame.
      I have my filming schedule planned out and I don't foresee repeating a framing episode any time soon. The fir would need to be finished so you could make it whatever color or stain desired.

    For a mixed media piece with a lot of "stuff" on it, would you recommend glass?

    • @SandraDuranWilson
      @SandraDuranWilson  3 роки тому

      If the piece is not sealed with a layer of acrylic I would recommend framing behind glass or plexi.

    • @carolclay7082
      @carolclay7082 3 роки тому

      @@SandraDuranWilson Thanks. I'm trying my hand at mixed media and your videos have really helped. Sealing them has been a big question for me. I've heard everything from a UV Spray that Golden recommends, to self leveling gel, to just a coat of matte or gloss medium. Putting them behind glass just seems like they would be more protected.

    • @SandraDuranWilson
      @SandraDuranWilson  3 роки тому

      @@carolclay7082 Sealing mixed media pieces is very dependent on what materials you use. I just posted a painting on my personal Facebook page and you can see that it has all kinds of "things" as well. I sprayed it with varnish just to seal it from moisture. If I have a piece with a lot of papers I may seal it with either a glossy or a matte finish. I don't believe that mixed media needs to follow the same protocol as sealing oil paintings. When something is under glass you have that barrier between the art and the viewer. I like the viewer to be able to really see the textures. It really comes down to personal preference.
      I am glad to hear that you are enjoying the videos. In my online classes I go into much more depth. I hope you might consider joining us sometime. Thanks for watching Carol.
