I think you did a great job filming this what a choice of location and position. You can get a great perspective on the group who were amazing. They just reached up and pulled the timing out of the sky!!!! Thank You
Iyer is definitely a genius...love it. I hear a lot of his grandpa in Gilmore's playing...a very interesting evolution indeed from Roy, Elvin and Tony. The African rhythmic overlay is beautiful.
WOW I dunno how I even found this, as a fan of "out there" genres & genre mashups - jazz/ edm/ avant garde/ jamband/ fusion/ Euro prog/ industrial/ noise/ experimental, this just happened to come up & I just happened to check it out for sh*ts & giggles, SOOOOOO glad I did!!!! Awesome stuff!!!!! I am gonna seek all these guys out from now on, look for their recordings, gigs, share on Facebook w/other jazzbo friends, etc. I am reminded somewhat of the David Murray big band. Thanks! This is what I picture the be bop guys sounding like in "On the Road", where Keroac describes his crew going to small African American jazz clubs in obscure towns in the midwest, & hearing guys "Blowing like Crazy, & We Danced Even Crazier All Night!" (or something like that, I read "On the Road" in high school, I'm 60 now). But I bet whatever jazz he saw was Wayyyyyy more Mainstream than this lol
Marcus is the next logical apex of rhythmic creative after Elvin Jones and Tony Williams, with Brian Blade and Eric Harland being the only two I know of in the same league as him. Maybe Ari Hoenig too.
I was about to say that he's good but not quite the same caliber, but I held my tongue and listened to some of his stuff for the first time in a while. He's fucking great. He's up there too for sure.
In my opinion, Dave King is way up there as well. His recent work is really incredible, although his music tends to be very different from the stuff that Eric, Brian, and Marcus play.
Did anybody else notice that Steve Lehmans playing around the 12 minute mark sounds a lot like the song foster brothers that he played with his trio as well as with Rudresh Mahanthappa? Is there a story behind this or did I miscatch that?
The amount of good music has gone down over the years. It used to be presented to the masses how it hides in deep corners of UA-cam in videos with barely any views. It’s sad to see the artists not get the recognition they deserve
@@thethatthisguy1110 I'd say the amount of good music has stayed the same, but the amount of Crap has multiplied log rhythmically. "Just Add Autotune - Instant Hit Single!!!!!"
Graham and Marcus, uncle and nephew, are both great!
What a drummer! 😲
Awesome band.
👏👏👏 👍👍👍

what about chris dave m8?
I was about to say that he's good but not quite the same caliber, but I held my tongue and listened to some of his stuff for the first time in a while. He's fucking great. He's up there too for sure.
I think Chris is more into the hiphop ascetic which is why we don't really consider him in the 'modern jazz' kind of stuff.
You need to buy some more albums.

Amazing Sextet !! Salve Gilmore !!

great tune! I hum it now every day in the shower.
58:40 that Herbie/Ron vibe
56:14 Billy Hart moment
Fuuuuck yes! That opening break shit is sooo good. Marcus' cymbals are as unreal as his playing. What's the weird thing on his right ride?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krakebs It may be this
that's exactly what it is, but only one of a pair... more traditionally played a pair in each hand
Did anybody else notice that Steve Lehmans playing around the 12 minute mark sounds a lot like the song foster brothers that he played with his trio as well as with Rudresh Mahanthappa? Is there a story behind this or did I miscatch that?
Does any percussion expert know what two bell cymbal/gong Marcus mounts on his ride? Just curious
Sure, scroll down in the comments- defined there
@@DonMountthanks, I appreciate it.

people who say that current music "sucks," has gone downhill," or any of those other tired old cliches... lol. use your internet, folks.

Mickey Mouse: Who stole my ears?
Gilmore: guess...
When will this band make a record..
New one on ECM out at the end of the month. Stephan Crump and Tyshawn Sorey instead of Gilmore and Brewer.
Does any one more what the name of the first tune is?
ioplm4862 "Nope".
This sounds like M-Base to me.
is the double bass player Jason Lindner??
No...credits are included, btw....it's Matt Brewer
