Never underestimate the sentimental value of something you really enjoyed at one point in your life. Even if you don't play the game, just having the cardboard is a great walk down memory lane.
This. Absolutely. This. I sold off my Pokémon Card collection a while back, but still held onto the cards my SO and I used in our decks we played, but here we are, 3 months later and the regret has REALLY kicked in. I did it to take her on a trip or something but we ended up not going so just used the money to pay for some bills here and there... I'm working on rebuilding my collection, but it'll take time and more money than what I got out of them obviously. But I will get it rebuilt.... it still hurts. So to just put it out there... DO NOT AELL YOUR COLLECTION, unless you need to to make ends meet.
Yeah, and it's kinda cool when those are cards that don't have any monetary value, I still remember opening my first Lhurgoyf back then when Ice Age was around, thinking "This will be so strong in our free for all multiplayer round - think I never actually played it, but I still own it. Then, I also remember opening that Mox Diamond from Stronghold, just thinking "wow, something called Mox, must be worth something" - played it in some decks but quit MtG shortly after Urza's Saga, just recently found out for how much some of those cards are traded now, and... I don't think I need a 400€ card lying around for my nostalgia. Now I also constantly fear it could be damaged, so I think I'll cash it in. Btw. why on earth are so many cards traded fpr so much more in the US compared to EU? And why isn't someone exploiting this via arbitrage? Customs, ok, but it shouldbe possible to transport some hidden small cards on a regular basis, right??
I sold out of my orginal collection for a girl who ended up cheating on me. The stuff I couldn't sell I gave to one of my friends to hold just in case. Fast forward like 6 years and him and my wife were playing D&D with some other friends, I asked if he would mind if I build a deck from his stuff to play around with. The next week he brought me a 4 row box and a 2 of the old mtg art boxes. Here this is all yours. I opened it up and saw my old arena deck boxes and in one was my academy deck. Complete with 2 Grim Monolith, Tolorian Academy, 2 Time Spiral. Plus stuff like a Cradle, Serra's Sanctum, Brain geyser, a couple Copy Artifact, and other reserve list stuff. I started crying because I never thought I'd see this stuff again. Moral of the story give stuff to a friend you trust just in case.
If wotc eventually reprints everything, you should sell off any pricey $50+ modern cards anyways and just repurchase them when they get reprinted and drop over 50%
I'm personally thinking of selling out of the cards I don't play anymore. Lots of Reserved list and Secret Lair and misc cards. But my whole philosophy is to put Equity into Equity. Put the money into the house Principal and make sure i own my house for retirement. If I can use my Magic collection for that then I've won.
Everyone's situation is different. Do you really need the money, extra space, etc. Why are you selling? Is it because the person your dating doesn't like games? If you don't need the money or space why are you selling? I tell friends to write down why they are selling, wait 90 days. Then go back & read what was written down then decide.
Solid advice. Everyone I know who sold out of magic eventually came back and regretted it. Myself included. I was smart enough to keep the reserve list cards and ones I had attachment too but others I had to buy again. Selling out of modern magic is much easier because you can easily buy it again and probably cheaper based on how WOTC has overprint everything. For the last 4 years, I've been selling off every modern card that isn't in a commander deck. Won't miss them if I'm not playing them anyway.
I just sold off some revised duel lands. Bought them in 2016, and they just sit in my binder since i dont want to play them in any decks. Got about x5 what i originally paid, so I can't complain too much. As far as dumping my entire collection I don't think I ever could.
Me: with my boxes upon boxes of cardboard crack 😂 really though i want to hold onto it for when i have kids so they can enjoy playing with the cards as i once did.
Selling your Magic cards all depends on your finances. If you want to get into Magic again or you are new to Magic you need to beware! It can be very expensive buying boxes. What I don't like about Wizards is that they reprint quite a few good cards driving the prices down too much while increasing the box prices. They want it both ways and they ruining the collectability of some of the cards. Thank you for the video.
interesting conversation, as always, man! i personally keep everything ABU and from 4 horsemen, as well as everything RL, but the rest is fair game for trade ins towards something bigger, like duals or a wheel, as you said! 😁👊🏻
@@StevieSparkZhey stevie! no, the 4 horsemen sets are Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends and The Dark. the first 4 expansions next to alpha, beta and unlimited. 😁👊🏻
@@KitchenTableTCG Got it, just curious your thoughts on it! Sorry my wording seems aggressive lol. I cant afford magic these days so I proxy EDH decks and play at non sanctioned events via my store
Sell my collection none of my cards are worth money because WOTC keeps reprinting cards with all sorts of products like secret lairs and other reprints unless you own a ton of cards on the reserve list it’s probably not worth selling your cards and losing 50 cents on the dollar
I sold out in 2012 and haven't looked back. I still play other TCGs but MTG has changed from a tourney heavy scene to a casual scene with commander. I loved the big mtg tourny scene and it was my main reason for playing. Its nothing against mtg as a game but Commader just isnt what I want out of mtg.
I feel the same way. Whenever I stopped playing Magic over the years, it was always because I couldn't find local tournaments to go to. Playing with a few friends was fine for a while, and they were good players, but they were never as invested in the competitive aspect of the game as I was. That isn't to say that they didn't play to win. As I said, they were all phenomenal players. But when it came to griding out reps for deck testing, and evaluating new cards, they just took a far more casual stance than I did. They also often preferred to just do a 3 or 4 player FFA, rather than pair off, or do small tourney brackets. Some of it was simply to save time as we all had lives, but even so, I imagine that they'd fit perfectly into current Magic aka Commander. Now that it's clear that no game stores around me are doing anything other than Commander, I simply have no reason to keep spending money on this game. I've moved on to Lorcana and One Piece. I can find actual 1v1 tourneys with players who are there for the same reason that I am.
I'm a YGO player but 100% MTG use to be like Melee Now MTG is like Brawl lol They want it to be a party game and it is now the super smash bros free for all mode of TCGs 😅
I had to switch my social circle entirely for this reason. I have thankfully found ppl who grind and love being competitive but I'm glad my region has a healthy amount of those type of players. While most ppl instead just play edh. Most negative experiences I've had with mtg, were from commabder
@georgiopapakonstantinou1580 yeah I feel you on the negative experiences thing. Every time I'm at my store playing my game and I see Commader players they are complaining and fighting. The few times I played commander, I was told this is casual some asshat would drop a several grand net deck on the table and Smash the table.. tons of fun.
Sell your cards, just make sure you get rewarded for risk premium of holding this stuff. Buy cycle lows and you are clear to sell cards at any point after a 2.5X move (this leaves you with profit after accounting for platform seller and shipping fees). You can guilt free play this game all day. If you get a parabolic move 3X any daily price you are in what would be considered a high risk overnight cardboard hold and would likely get some type of price retracement or worst case experience a crash.
A number of years ago I was in a tough place financially. Freshly divorced, lost my job, etc etc. I would up selling some of my better cards to help get by, and I absolutely regret it now. I still have a large collection but a lot of my better cards are gone. At the time I really did need the money, but looking back I wish I could have found another way.
When I have these conversations regardless of how or what they’re thinking about selling or getting out of the hobby I tell everyone the same thing at the end of the conversation. “When in doubt, ride it out because if there’s a chance of remorse I don’t want to be any factor in that situation. By telling them I don’t want to weigh on their decision helps them able to make the decision themselves
I have also regretted selling out before. I sold my entire collection in 2018 and regret it all the time. I finally started unloading my collection recently, mostly because I realized I was holding onto a lot for no reason, but also I started figuring out exactly what cards and decks I wanted to hold onto. For instance, I have commander decks and a custom Jumpstart set, and then the cards I believe will grow in value over time that I'm saving. I think it's worth holding onto investments, but also keeping stuff you're attached to.
I sold all my bulk and everything Im not using in decks I didnt have much but ended up with about 800 bucks i didn't have bills are more important then cards you can just proxies and have fun with at home with friends plus cheaper then going to a card store to play. I know alot of people dont agree with this but its the simple fact everything cost way to much for me to be buying cardboard
Sold mu collection for wedding and got about $3.5k in late 2014. Man what a regret. 3 OG duals, wheel of fortune, slicer queen, playsets of Snapcaster, Cavern of Souls and many other staples. Wife asked if i was sure and i thought i was. My now 10 year old son found my cube about a year ago (held onto my cube and 3 EDH decks). Made me so happy when he asked me to teach him and sad about all i had gave up on. Now about a year later him, my 14 year old daughter and I eadh have a $5-600 EDH deck and love playing. Still happily married but wished i never gave up my collection that would be about $10-12,000 now.
I now and then contemplate selling off my surplus, i.e. the stuff that is outside of what I have defined as my "collection", and that task appears monumental. Gotta do it eventually, but procrastination is an evil thing.
Wish my local store was run by you. They give you pennies on the dollar for them, then act like they are doing you a favor if you want cash instead of cred
Nah, I tell the people at my shop the same thing. Like "Hey, not that I don't want your collection...because I do. It'll make me money....buuttttt....hear me out." And yeah, maybe sometimes I talk people out of selling their collections but, like you said, in the end if that's what really makes them happy and to keep coming around, makes them understand that I'm not just here to rip them off and flip product, then it's worth it. A repeat customer is worth way more than a one off "here, buy my stuff and you're never going to see me again" individual. Because the average life span of a player is around 3-4 years, then they drop for another 2 years, give or take. Then, most of them want to come back. At least this way, if I convince them to keep their decks, they've got something to come back with.
