  • "I was the first woman president of an African nation, and I do believe more countries ought to try that," says H.E. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Nobel laureate and former president of Liberia. Telling the story of how Liberian women helped rebuild their country after years of civil war, Sirleaf discusses why gender equality is essential to peace and prosperity -- and shares her plan to uplift a generation of women prepared to take leadership positions and catalyze social change.

The best thing men and women can do to "lead us to freedom, justice and peace" is to be better fathers and mothers. Public office doesn't heal societies--it usually only enriches the occupant. Teach your children to be good citizens and you will do more good than 100 years in a public leadership position.

The best way to teach children is by example. Until all citizens vote and participate in their respective societies, your statement will continue to be true.

Completely agree that women need the opportunity to be in government, but I really can't support voting for someone just because they're a woman. Take them into the equation, but a less qualified person shouldn't be chosen over a more qualified one, in any situation (althought it's often the case, even with men by themselves).

Why are people so aggressive towards Feminists?
You'd have to make a strong case again common knowledge to assume that Feminists are making men's life harder. This woman comes from a deeply religious and misogynous CONTINENT. Women are not equal to men there. She's speaking from her experience, not from yours. Her story inspires those from her community, not yours.
Criticizing her message is undermining the very core of common sense. This aggression from the internet against the word "Feminism" baffles me. There are still clear injustices towards women simply for not being a man, the same way non-whites are oppressed in the USA. The confusing thing here is that, while are Racists are obviously a part of the movement against Feminism, people who would others condemn Racism openly dismiss Feminists. I cannot imagine a woman arguing against what I'm saying, yet I've been proven wrong more times than acceptable, by otherwise level-headed women.
I'd like somebody who doesn't agree with me to explain their opinion. Please refrain from using alternating caps (Predictable) or meaningless memes. Just tell me what your beliefs on human rights are.
If you try to quote radical feminist, I'll quote some other radical group (The extremes are meaningless). I await your insults too since you now know everything about me.
    [Merriam Webster] Feminism
    1. the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.
    2. organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests.
You'd have to be delusional to argue against that.

I believe standards (Here, trying to obtain equality) are difficult to define.
From what you wrote, I understand that you do not disagree with the belief of Feminism, as in you believe in equality between sexes. Yet you also think that the term Feminism is the problem itself, as it clearly expresses a priority towards the female side of the spectrum.
Yet, such terms shouldn't be taken literally. Take what Canada's (my country's) Prime Minister said "Peoplekind" as opposed to mankind.
Do I find that dumb? Of course, Peoplekind doesn't mean anything, it's not a word. Yet from what you wrote, Peoplekind should be the right word. I personally think both the female meaning in Feminism and the male leaning word mankind, by themselves, irrelevant. Either of them could change, it wouldn't matter to me. Though it appears that, to you, they should change.
Fair enough argument on your side, as I do not claim to know the answer to this issue, or whatever it may be classified as.
