a HUGE school of Silver Perch!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- This was probably the largest and most aggressive school of silver perch I've ever encountered. I originally intended to replicate my carp fishing success at this spot from a year ago, but my baits were intercepted by a massive pack of ferocious little bait stealing silvers.
I caught 7 or 8, and had no chance of keeping track of how many fish I lost. Most of the day consisted of my bait being stolen within 20 seconds of hitting the water. Most of the session consisted of a few different float fishing rigs, but I also fished the bottom towards the end to hook a couple of the more tricky fish.
Despite costing me a ton of worms, this was one of the most fun fishing trips I've had in quite a while.

Nice trip mate! Every time I see you fish this location I'm jealous because it looks like a great spot. I recall in that carp video you referenced how you took care to land the carp on the mat only to say you were then going to bash his head, LOL! Those silver perch are really cool fish and I'm sure fun to catch. I always try to compare our species and they look like our white perch which are equally as fun to catch (and taste very good, too).
Thanks buddy, it's definitely a great spot. You have a great memory my friend, yes that's the video I'm talking about haha! Hopefully someday I can come and catch some white perch over there.
Awesome work. Loved it. Looks like so much fun.
That first release though. 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks heaps Robbie, it was an absolute blast! That first silver stole his diving style from Greg Louganis I think!
Those silver perch look very similar to our white perch here. They're good catfish bait. The white perch here don't bow their bodies like those silvers do, but they do poke their gills out and them things are sharp and will slice you up if you aren't careful. That's a lot of fun when you find an actively feeding school of fish like that. :)
Ah yes the silver perch along with our other native species have plenty of sharp and spiky bits as well haha. It makes handling them so tricky when they are flopping around LOL. I definitely had a lot of fun with this school of fish haha
I was fishing on the Patuxent river today and caught one of these in brackish water first time I ever caught one and apparently they are native to the united states.
Silver perch can be caught in the Chesapeake bay
Bro, have ya tried using circle hooks?
I haven't tried circle hooks when float fishing before, I think there's too much slack in my line for that but I could always give it a go sometime
Lots of action out there!! Bobber and worm fishing is kind of nostalgic!
Cheers mate, yeah it sure is haha
Lovely to see that spot again mate and always a treat to see the silvers
Thanks Shamus! I would frequent that spot a lot more often if it wasn't so far away lol. Silver Perch are always a welcome sight, such a beautiful fish.
Great video and nice catches. I'm new to your channel and just wandering if you have any tips or recommended locations or bait to catch silver perch. Haven't tried catching em before but keen to land one someday even if it's a small one. Thanks.
The Campaspe River in Echuca is probably the best spot to target them mate, but a lot of family friendly lakes around Victoria have been stocked with them in the past few years. The best bait is worms, but corn works well too.
Sitting in a hospital bed browsing.Always fun catching fish.Enjoyed.There is that wire if you don’t mind me asking as I don’t recognise it.
I replied earlier but it disappeared for some reason lol. Glad you enjoyed it mate. I don't like giving away this particular location because it's accessed through private property, sorry. I hope your hospital stay is only a short one and it's not too serious! Get well soon.
US angler here... it looks like many of your native fish are different species in the same family? These silver perch look similar to the murray cod, yellow bellies, etc. that you catch... looks alot like the white perch and white bass that we have over here as well!
Hi Brian! The murray cod and yellowbelly are definitely in the same family, the Percichthyidae, but silver perch are different, they are a Terapontidae - they are actually a grunter rather than a perch. In other areas of Australia we have many other types of native fish from different families as well, but where I live there's only a few native options. I've been told that the silver perch look like your white perch and bass before actually, and I tend to agree! Thanks for watching mate.
Has that weir got a fish way incorporated into it. If so would be interested if you could show it in more detail explaining how it works. Just for interest sake. They spent $5 mill building one a few years back here in Dubvegas. Looks impressive hopefully it works well. They need a few more here on the Macquarie and other nsw rivers. Great video really enjoyed it. Do you ever try soft plastics on natives or carp successfully?
G'day Jeff, nah there's no fish way at this weir but I would support one being installed. To be completely honest with you I'm not 100% sure how they work, I've never seen one up close haha. From what I hear they are amazing things for the native fish populations. I do use soft plastics but mostly for redfin. I haven't been able to get a carp to take one yet but I know it's possible
Ripper video Rohan. From the sound of your laughter it sounded like you had a blast. Those silver perch are bloody good bait theifs. Also I like your shirt 😉
Thanks heaps mate, I sure did! That type of fishing is loads of fun. Do you watch hermitcraft? I watch it with my daughters
@@RKJFishing Yeah I tend to watch it from time to time
It's no surprise that you lost sight of your float in all the foam - the fluoro side faces up...for visibility!
Robbie also does the same with his red and white clip-on floats. But great video anyway!
Haha thanks mate. A lot of people have actually pointed that out, I've always used them with the white side up I didn't realize they were meant to go the other way hahaha. Next time I'll put it on the other way lol. Thanks again!
Yep! When the fish looks up into the water column it sees white and doesn't notice the float, camouflage.
@@stephenfredrickson4722 That does make a lot of sense actually!
@@RKJFishing all good,I'm still learning.
@@RKJFishing is there free camping along the rivers around your area? Ovens river, campaspe, murray river,I m thinking of coming up with my daughter at Christmas!?
Do some camping and have a look around beechworth?
Ha. You gotta be quick to hook silver perch mate, well done. Is that spot far from Shepparton?
LOL yeah they are crafty little buggers aye! Yeah it's a long way from Shep
@@RKJFishing ahh fair enough. I need a new spot, I've noticed too much activity and trash at my old spot. I'm getting tired of picking up other people's rubbish, and catching no fish.
I've only today starting watching you, and already subscribed 👍.
Ah ok that sucks, I've had that problem many times in the past as well. I don't know the fishing around Shepparton that well, but I've heard very good things about the Broken River if you haven't explored that yet. Thanks so much for the sub I really appreciate the support
Hey good work love ya show r silver peach any good to eat
Cheers mate thanks heaps. I've heard they are a absolutely magnificent eating fish, but they are protected in my parts. There are places in Victoria you're allowed to keep a few though, check the regulations for more info
Awesome session on The Silvers. Nice work RKJ. Congrats. Such a beautiful native fish to see thriving in that ecosysytem.
Thanks so much mate, you're absolutely right they are an amazing fish.
Fish like sitting in around the bubbles do they mate?
Some fish more so than others. Yellowbelly, trout, and silver perch are all notorious for sitting right next to a bubble line and waiting for the food to come to them, but they aren't the only fish you'll find in a place like that
Ok interesting! I caught a legal cod right on the edge of some bubbles in deni earlier in the year.
@@chrisl2694 Nice work mate! Yeah cod definitely like that type of area as well, especially if there's a big snag nearby or in low light conditions. The water with the most oxygen also flows through that part so if the water is a bit dirtier they might find it easier to breathe there
Those perch are beautiful never seen one like that.
They are definitely a pretty fish for sure
Great vid Rohan.
Glad you had so much fun.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much Brett, I sure did mate lol
Love the channel mate
Thanks mate
That looked like a lot of fun mate, there small but just as hungry lol...
Great day Rohan, take care mate ATB Jim
It sure was fun Jim! I tell ya what if they keep eating that well they won't stay small for long haha. Thanks mate
Put the red side of the float up Rohan and you will see it better in the bubbles! Sympathise with you over those bait stealing little barstools, I had plenty of experience with them myself this week. Good fun though.
So I'm being told Frank. I think next time I use a floater I'm going to flash everyone's comments on the screen about having it the wrong way up LOL. Yep I saw you get onto a couple in your video, definitely a lot of fun
@@RKJFishing Also I reckon the round bobber is harder for the smaller fish to pull under - I would be trying a stemmed float next time.
@@captainfrank01 Very true, although keep in mind I was targeting huge carp with the rig I had on the day haha. I need to invest in some of those stemmed floats for redfin fishing at the lakes
Awesome to see good numbers of silvers, well dine mate
It sure is! Thanks heaps mate.
Jeez great spot! Where is it?
It's an awesome spot, but I access this spot via private property so I'm not allowed to say where it is, sorry mate.
rohan where abouts is this place? is it still elmore weir? trying to take the kids somewhere where i can get them a fish to catch lol
Hi Mick, no this isn't the Elmore weir, this spot is on private property - however the Elmore weir is definitely a good place to take the kids to catch a fish
Well done Rohan. Its always great fun when you find a school of littlies. As you said it doesn't matter if you catch them it's the fun of it. Those 100 worm tubs are convenient for those days haha
Thanks heaps Jaron, yeah the fun is the reason we go fishing in the first place, and I definitely had a lot of that lol. I think I'll stick to the 100 worm tubs from now on lol
@@RKJFishing lol thats the only 1 i get haha. Go through 2 tubs a session sometimes
Haha bloody tiny buggers.
Awesome to see them in numbers.
Wouldn't mind ticking a silver perch off the list too 👌👌
It sure is. You will know there's some in the area if you go through an entire tub of worms in 30 minutes haha
@@RKJFishing 😂😂😂😂
Bloody hell thats nuts haha
Is your float on upside down
I don't think so? I've always put the white part at the top
@@RKJFishing. put the white of the float underneath Rohan, that way it's not so visible to the fish. If the red is underneath the fish will see a big dark shape above the bait and the bigger, older and wiser fish wont go near it. White against the sky is harder for them to see.
Well there you go, you've taught me something! I'll definitely do that next time. Thanks guys
@@RKJFishing You'll be glad you did mate.
Red is easier to see in the white bubbles, too!
As long as the float isn’t weighted/loaded, I always just use the color that is most visible to me for the conditions ...
That was a nice enjoyable session!
Grate job!
Thanks so much mate, I certainly enjoyed it haha
Great stuff. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and the family. It's been a great year of entertainment.
Thank you so much Malcolm. The same to you and your family mate.
That is close to Elmore? Edit: the float fishing is fun as mate. Good stuff , tight lines. 🤠
It's not overly close to Elmore, but it's not overly far either haha. It's accessed via private property. Float fishing is definitely loads of fun when the fish are switched on. Thanks heaps mate!
@@RKJFishing ahh, no worries at all sir.
I thought it was either the Elmore wier or the one above. It just looked like Campaspe, after researching the area, I have got to get down there. Melbourne is a bit too much mate.
@@mana-de1sh I couldn't live in Melbourne, it's just too fast paced and too crowded for my liking lol! I love the quiet country lifestyle
Good work man, love ya work 👌
Thanks heaps mate
Thats what fishing is all about. Having fun!!
You're absolutely right mate
Beautifully done mate! Silvers are really starting to dominate a few spots now! It does get a bit monotonous after a while feeding them! Fun fact they are not a perch but a grunter; they grunt sometimes when they are out of the water, the bigger ones do.
Thanks heaps Les! Haha yeah if it wasn't so much fun it would have been frustrating lol. I've certainly heard the larger ones grunt at me while fiddling around trying to get the hook out haha
What weir is that?
It's accessed via private property mate so I can't share the location sorry
Try a circle hook. I am yet to gut hook a fish on a circle. A small circle would work quite well I reckon.
Everyone tells me to use circle hooks so the fish don't get gut hooked, but I've gut hooked my fair share of fish on circle hooks, especially yellowbelly. It might be different for silver perch though
@@RKJFishing I have not caught a golden on a circle so wouldn't be able to comment. But hundreds of carp, and more than a few reddies, have pretty much all been lip hooked. Dunno, maybe the goldens inhale it further back. The only fish I have deep hooked was that silly cod that took the bread bait. But looking at the size of her, I am not surprised she took it down. I am only surprised I landed her.
@@AndrewFishman Haha yeah fair enough! I'll have to experiment more with them at some stage.
Nice brim well that is what I cool them
Thanks mate! A lot of people still do call them brim or silver brim, I used to call them that when I was a kid
@@RKJFishing 😂yer down at lake Victoria well at the regerlater in Wentworth their is so many brim and red fin it is mad down here
At least you had a good day of fishing and laughter it looks like the silver perch must have run the carp off
Thanks so much Jerry, I sure did mate. I'd say the silver perch were eating all the food so the carp decided to look elsewhere haha
Haha those bait stealers they sure love those worms, that's crazy I remember watching the video of the carp with the free lure that's awesome
They are the most skilled little worm thieves in the river! That's cool that you remember Captain Lurehead haha
Silver perch season
Great to see their there in numbers, between them and the cod and the odd angler's should put a bit of a dint in the carp population.
Absolutely Craig! The old carp and redfin are getting harder to find every year in that river. Great signs for the future for sure.
It does not feel like a Yr
Haha I know right!? It spun me out when I noticed
Huh that carp video was the video that i subbed to, the first one i ever watched
Also it was the day it came out
Also i have an idea for when your trying to catch silver perch, try using hooks about half that size and half a worm you would catch alot more of them i bet, and not use up as many worms
Nvm im not done the vid, but i understand why you use such a big hook now
Wow that's a really cool coincidence! Glad you're still here watching me after all this time. Haha yeah that's why I mentioned the hook size in the video, I knew people were going to comment! lol
i was out fishing with yabbie tails and i was out the little murry out the back of lake boga and caught a heap of silver perch and carp
Nice work mate! I fished in the little murray last time I was over that way and I didn't even get a bite! You did very well.
@@RKJFishing you need a boat to get up right close to them willow tress they live in them
You've got the floater upside-down, orange easier to see in the foam 👍
I'm hearing that a bit actually! I'll definitely try it that way next time, thanks for the tip mate
@@RKJFishing ha ha.
I used to fish for the silvers in the Murray when I was a young fella. They love that faster shallow water. Small hook and just enough worm to cover the hook of the go. No worm hanging off, that's why you couldn't hook them, that had hold of the worm not the hook.
You should try fishing for cod in that spot, they love eating silver perch so could be hanging around the school.
Good vid👍
@@kelvinthomas374 Thanks for the tips mate. I definitely do hit that hole for cod from time to time, I actually had a giant spinnerbait in the back of my car to throw around if I did no good with the floater hahaha
Looks like the perch is going to have a headache as well as a new piercing 🍻🍻👍👍🤣🤣

Yeah me to thanks for the amazing vids
Love yu man
my fav fish:)
It's a pretty fish for sure
education of a school to eat worms and not hooks 🙂
Haha true!
LOL! those little buggerss are like the reddies. Take your worm and don't hang around to say thanks.
The reason they bow their bodies like that is to make them harder to swallow. Same reason as why yebblies and Reddies flare their gills and put their dorsal fins up. It is hard to swallow something when you have a dorsal spine stuck in your gullet. The plan is to get coughed up to hopefully swim away and live to be swallowed another day.
I knew about the gills and dorsal fins but I didn't realize that's why they bowed their bodies. It makes sense but they tend to do it a lot more than other fish for some reason.
@@RKJFishing They're tastier??
@@captainfrank01 hahaha
fun session im in nsw we have worms here called piss worms they look like the worms you are using our worms piss on you and if you rub your fingers together at night time it glows does that happen with your worms?
G'day John! I've heard people talk about those before actually. These ones do secrete some yellow stuff when putting them on the hook, and not always from where the hook goes in haha. I'll have to test out if it glows in the dark!
I just saw this thumbnail and know exactly where you are. Would that be a certain wier named after an acidic fruit tree?
No mate this one isn't named anything like that. I'm curious where you're talking about though, it would be cool if there was another one exactly the same!
Lemon tree Wier near Toowoomba haha
Looks identical!
@@EastJebus Ah ok haha, I'll search it up on google. This one was filmed down in Victoria!

try some banana or water melon in your shrimp nets when you go after those guys
banana or water melon for shrimp? Wow I haven't heard of those ones before. I'll definitely give them a try, thanks for the tip!
