Amen brother. I just parted my first e36 and I did very well on it. I usually am sitting on a few e30s and e34s. E30s are gold. E34s not so much. I just love them.
Hey E36 Fanatics, yeah, the cinder-blocks @ 7:57 seconds are supposed to have more strength when you use them vertically (NOT horizontally! as they can crush out) = Engineered for use when the holes are at the top and bottom, just as you would when building a brick wall. I know by experience, have had blocks go to pieces, the way you show yours.. aaaaaand, axle stands are fairly cheap and safer alternative!! hope this is helpful, Great Vid bro!!! lat'r Buzz
Thanks! I usually use the pair of axle stands I have at the house, but that car was sitting a while so I used the concrete. Thanks for the idea, I try and use 4x4's now when I've got a car sitting.
I saw an OzMods video where the jack stand actually collapsed under the car when he was about to change out the exhaust, so no they aren’t always the safest. I’d always put some wood or concrete blocks under just for extra insurance
Do you do this for a living? I resell items for a living and im searching for my niche and really thinking about getting into selling car parts since I am a backyard mechanic anyways. I have pick and pull junkyards in my area with a ton of cars, can you recommend some items that sell really well or I should be looking for? so far ive found a few Mercedes shifters are expensive and some amplifiers go for a good price. and certain climate controls on some cars sell well, (ive currently got a hand full of mercedes and lexus parts) but really looking to add a few hundred parts to my inventory. Any help would be great, Subscribed.
I have been parting out cars on eBay and Craigslist for some time now. I have been a car guy my whole life. I have a two bay shop behind my house with lift, air tools, etc. I only put the cars on craigslist to sell big parts, ie, fender, doors, hoods, etc. All the smaller stuff is for eBay where the REAL money is. I put all my effort on eBay and anything that sells on Craigslist is a bonus. 50% of my buyers are repair shops. A salvage yard near me sells $20,000 per month on eBay. It is the way to go. It is better to buy whole cars for scrap and part them out fro full profit. I do not waste time going to junkyards to buy. I make all my money back from scrap weight, converter, tires, rims, battery and all the parts I have on eBay I have nothing into for 100% profit! I do this full time.
At that point though you run the risk of getting caught. If you don’t have a dismsntlers license you can get hit with some hefty fines. You can profit well by going to your local pick-a-part and getting parts but you MUST have knowledge on in demand/profitable OEM parts. My family owns two wrecking yards in Southern California and I ran the eBay department. I moved to Texas last year and started sourcing parts at my local pick-a-parts.
I noticed that you said to cut anything in your way like the a hoses...those are valuable too I've gone to the junk yard to look for hoses and find them cut they maybe small but in demand
I was talking to a bone yard guy a while ago about getting a coolant hose. He said they don't sell them because they can't guarantee them. An old hose is problematic. Oh, and you're right. I hadda pay 60 bucks for that hose. And it was metal not rubber.
I'm thinking about parting out my old 2006 Mazda 3 hatch. Looking to get the same car but much newer like 2014 and straight away I can use the winter tires as a second set. Plus the battery is worth a lot.
It’s called junk receipt with or without you ever registered the vehicle if you part it out it’s important to notify them it’s hassle free and no charge your local Dmv office offers this services. California only don’t know other states
Great video. My 2011 Altima 2.5S just died, because the CVT transmission died. All other parts of the car are in good working condition (although aged). I'm a novice - is it worth parting out? Also, is there a chance that someone on Craig's list will come pay me more than the "pick and pull" places and part the car themselves? For example one of the scrappers offered m $420 for the entire car and will tow it from my house. Your thoughts. Thanks!!!
You can cut up a shell in a half an hour with a cutting wheel in an angle grinder. Even if you have a small vehicle you can get it small enough to get it to the scrap yard. There's a lot a web sites that give you the price of scrap. It the price is in the toilet and you have room, you can horde your scrap metal pile for a few months and hope the price goes up. Most of the time it's not worth it.
Christopher Larkin it all depends on the company your working with, I had to talk with several before I found one that would pull shells for me. The price of aluminum and metal in general has dropped over the past few years, I typically only get between 50-75 for the shell.
Thanks for the comment, yes I've heard this before. The issue is they can potentially crumble from the weight after being rained on overtime. This is why I use wooden blocks as well.
E36 Fanatics one of the best things you can use that you may have in plentiful quantity if you scrap cars is rims...a steel rim makes great vehicle cribbing... If it's not enough, take a piece of steel pipe and weld it in the center of the rim...take another pipe with a steel plate welded on top and stick into the first pipe, drill about three holes through them for a steel pin to set the height. Best Jack stands you ever had.
My real question is what do you do when nothing but the frame is left? Who comes to pick it up? The junkyard? Without the wheels how do they get it on a tow truck?
I have found that some junkyards will pick up shells, some will not. I have a junkyard that will pick up the shell as long as there is one major drivetrain component left. Diff, trans or motor.
So when I was parting out cars that was not the location where I typically parted them out. I usually did it at my friend's garage which had a dirt driveway. The only time I leave wheels on a car is if they are cheap iron rims, if they are nice aluminum rims without to much curb rash I take them off and sell them as they are worth quite a bit of $ in good condition. Junk truck comes by and drags the car onto the bed regardless if it has rims or not.
E36 Fanatics lol oh wow! I doubt the yards around here would be cool with that, i think they will be tripping about damaging their bed. I bought a 04 maxima with a bad motor and im thinking of parting it out instead of putting an engine since they are almost 1,000 bucks and im not sure if the tranny is ok which is also about 1000, so i might end up paying 2k which is not profitable at all. since i was never able to drive the car, the motor ran so bad i could drive without it dying. The body overall is in decent shape, nice interior and wheels in good shape, accessories seem to be good. Its a shame i thought it might be something like fuel or ignition issue. If i part it out i think i can get atleast 1000, i payed 450 so that's the only way i could see getting my money back.
How do you prevent people on eBay from Parts swapping you in claiming the refund under the ebay money back guarantee policy I've had tons of people do that to me with electronics and I recently decided to upgrade to a different vehicle and would like to part mine out
Out of all the parts I've sold on ebay I have never had that issue come up, I can only remember doing 2 returns, and they were both because the buyer didn't match the part number.
You have to mark your parts. Get a paint pen and dab some paint onto the screw head of the electronic part. If the paint seal is broken from the buyer trying to remove presumably your working component and swapping with their defective one then you will know. So if they return a “defective” part you will notice because that paint seal will either be broken or not there at all.
You're welcome. I have learned a lot about these things by stripping my old car down, and selling parts. I still have a ton of parts. All of the parts that you listed, are super popular requests. Also, people have to understand, that fully parting a car out takes time.
Ryan Pinkham the worst part I've had to pull is the six cylinder bmw transmissions, but if the car has low enough mileage you can get some really nice money from the transmission, differential and the exhaust.
Just wanted to let you know that freon is dangerous because you can suffocate if you inhale it, not because of frost bite... So wear a good mask with a p100 filter or better.
You can make beer money by cutting it up yourself. Grab any metal you can find around like old fridges and stoves on the way to the scrap yard to fatten up the load. But it's not going to make you rich.
What was your total profit from the Benz after all the fees paid, cost of vehicle ect... not including your labor? Last year i bought a high end vehicle for 650 and so far i made a little over 480 profit after deducting cost of vehicle and shipping and fees. This spring i am going to strip the rest of the vehicle. I'm hoping to make at least a grand profit when everything sells.
That specific vehicle was a car that my dad owned that blew a front differential at 250k so I parted it. I normally only part out bmw's, I typically get part out cars for $500 or less, and another $50-100 for moving and storage costs. I usually make at least $1500 in profit, but I've been doing E36s for a while so I pull specific parts.
@@bvybvy No, my average was closer to $2500 per car, I don't think I ever made less than $1,500 from a vehicle. But I am picky with the parts I pull, I leave a lot of parts that take too long to sell on the car.

They can be, I typically just cut through them, personally I've found that most people want to buy hoses new.

You might want to google using concrete cinder blocks to support a car. Quite a few sources say it's dangerous.
