Wow! Solution #1 resolved the problem immediately after I had wasted my time trying to find an answer using Google Android apps. Just click on the notifications on the top left side of (my) screen twice, click on the "rotation" symbol, and the problem stopped being a problem. Thank You!

Thanks my man, very first solution worked for me. Couldn't get my phone to rotate when I was watching a movie. So I pulled the screen down as directed. But there was no 'auto-rotate' showing. That's because it was showing 'Portrait'. Pressed on Portrait, then 'auto-rotate' appeared. Brilliant, thanks mate

Thanks, restarting the phone worked but only temporarily. Settings > General management > Reset > Reset all settings fixed it for me.

Gave you a thumbs up for the effort, even though this did not help my Samsung A42 issue. I did not try a factory reset, but I am hoping that won't be necessary. In my case the issue is most annoying in Google Maps because my phone needs to be upside own to charge in the car. Was working fine, but seems that perhaps Google Maps had a recent update that is breaking auto-rotate. Auto-rotate is working for landscape - just not for reverse portrait.
