    It’s all Al on drums, I saw him do it live in front of my eyes (before you were born) on the 84 tour. He starts playing hertas on a Simmons pad, followed by the bass drums coming in underneath with a fast shuffle rhythm. Which is reminiscent of an idling motorcycle. Al then plays some tom accents over the top to make things more interesting. When he breaks into the groove, he plays an inverted swing rhythm on the ride bell. Modern drummer even released a book all about Alex and confirmed this.

  • @papawolf60

    I believe when Van Halen played on that tour Alex had 4 kicks and had a couple multi connected beaters. 2 sets with a couple linkages going out to the outer kicks.

      The outer kicks had no pedals or beaters. They were connected with large conduits in an attempt to magnify the amount of bass coming off the kick drums. Like passive radiators in a speaker enclosure. Also 'cuz it looked outrageous.
      Alex never played the intro solo live the way it sounded on the album.

    Guy #2 has been one of my favorite UA-cam drummers for quite some time. Him and his brother(?) are quite possibly the closest thing to a VH revival you can get. His appreciation for Alex Van Halen runs incredibly deep- the main reason for him using triggered pads for his rendition of the solo is because AVH used electronic pads for his kick on 1984 (as well as the following tour) and then right across the board switched to electronic drum pads for toms on the 5150 record (and following tour afterwords).
    From the triggered pads right down to the bronze paiste cymbals, his dedication to replicating the famous Van Halen drum sound is a valiant effort in of itself. I choose him overall despite the “jazz metal” ride section and the high pitched kick sample. Killer drummer, as well as his brother being a killer guitarist!

    Great video. I had heard in 1984 they mic'd up Alex's super-car rather than a Harley. It's hard to say as the band just lets rumors soar to legendary status with little explanation (brown M & Ms for instance). Four kicks for show. There were additional kicks on the front of the batter kicks with flexible tubes that could be stretched to adjust the fundamental kick tone to the arenas. Grateful to see 1984 and 5150 tours at the Cow Palace.

    Alex van halen used Simmons electronic drums to achieve this. The kick and toms are basically just pitched up/down versions of each other which is why it sounds like "four bass drums" were being used. The "four bass drums" actually refers to his live setup, which was mostly for looks. The hertas are played using his hands on a "floor tom" of sorts electronic drum pad, though they stop when he starts playing the wooden tom. I suggest you find the original drum track, with the drums isolated to kick, snare, cymbals, and toms. You can solo the toms and remove the shuffle beat bass drums and find that this is entirely possible to do. "Guy #2" and/or Josh Gallagher pretty much plays it spot on, along with actually using electronic drums.

    You're over-complicating the breakdown. It's much simpler than people think. You have to basically incorporate the dotted eighth ride ostinato that he plays once he goes to the bell... but on the floor tom as the kicks are shuffling and the left hand moves to the 10" tom. Alex and Ed were the sons of jazz musician so they naturally incorporated the swing into their music but in a modern rock style.
    The dude at the 12:30ish mark is playing it how I'm trying to describe. I've been playing the song for 30 years off and on in various bands and have played and lead sang it the past 15 or so.
    Thanks for taking the time to put this cool video together and keeping the rock alive! 🥁🎶🤟🍻

    Guy #2 plays it exactly like the record (ride bell aside). Alex played the hertas on a simmons pad to his right triggering a low kick drum sound. Then his double pedals trigger a different simmons kick sound for the shuffle. Right at the start you can faintly hear his sticks click on the edge of the simmons pad or something. No overdubbing, all live performed. Thats why the herta kick drum starts dropping hits once the toms come in. He DID use the simmons pad to play the intro on the original 1984 tour, theres a very crunchy video of it on youtube, but now he just skips the intro entirely.

    Do you want to know the real secret to the Alex Van Halen “ four bass drums “ ? It is a second beater on each pedal with a very loose cam and drive that lags behind the primary beater . Or so my drummer told me

I see a lot of young folks commenting on world class pipe drummers saying that anyone in DCI could do better. Could we dive into the differences and complexities of Scottish pipe drumming?!

    You CAN play 4 kick drums! You use a binary pedal, meaning that when you step it kicks, when you retreat it kicks. In essence, it kicks twice when you step and release. Both feet, 2 kick drums a foot, a binary pedal with a hit for each kick drum. I've seen it done.

  • @davidb5122
    @davidb5122 3 роки тому +3

    Always wondered how Alex played that part. I thought he was using specialized kick pedals, two bass drum pedals and each pedal has two beaters so each kick gives like a flam effect. You can probably tell I'm not a drummer, but that's how I had it in my imagination at least

    The first 6 seconds of the song are in fact the 1984 album
    engineer Don Landry’s recording the tail pipe of Eddie Van Halen’s Lamborghini Diablo idling in his garage ... it is not drums. THEN Don programmed the Simmons kick drum to replicate the sound the best he could. This is why the intro is not actually in perfect time.

    Awesome video - I just subscribed and thank you for making your transcription available. I believe Alex assigned the same kick drum sound to his electronic tom pad that he was using for his double electronic kick drums on this song. Alex did have to do overdubs on the 1984 album, but not because of the complexity of the parts. Ed's recently built 5150 studio didn't have space of Alex's cymbals, so he had to overdub the cymbals. Listen to the first roto-tom fill on "I'll Wait" and you'll hear where he missed the cymbal crash. In hindsight it makes the song sound unique, but this was an accident.
    I think the only reason Alex doesn't play the first few seconds of HFT live is because he no longer uses electronic kicks, and the part doesn't sound right unless the same sound is used for the kicks and tom.
    Interestingly, in Ted Templeman: A Platinum Producer's Life in Music" (2020 Greg Renoff), Ted claims that the first few seconds of HFT isn't Alex at all- it's Ed's lambo exhaust. Ted goes into detail about how much time he and Donn Landee spent editing the exhaust to make it sound like drums. This doesn't make any sense at all (to me), and I would love to question Ted and Donn Landee (or Alex!) to get the facts straight.

    Question, I could have sworn there was a “double pedal” for 4 bass hits. Aka the quad pedal. If I remember it’s all just on one bass (from the video I watched) but couldn’t you hypothetically rig it on 2 bass drums and play the herta part in one foot, and the other part in the other foot? It would be hecka difficult but, I mean, if you train and practice enough you couuuuuld do it.
    Edit: yeah just rewatched a video and found out it is 2 pedals on each bass drum, meaning you could totally do it, did I hear a worlds hardest drum solo 2020 video? 👀👀👀

    • @MetalSStar196
      @MetalSStar196 3 роки тому +1

      You could in theory rig two kick drums and a pair of double-kick pedals (each pedal having 2 kickers instead of having it formatted as one kick drum with twin kick pedals.) Again, it is possible if you can play fast footwork and can djent like Amon Amarth's drummer.

    Side note: it’s wild how many (non-drumming) Van Halen fans have no clue the song was meant to sound like a shovelhead. I nerd out when ever it gets mentioned, this video was dope,, thank you!
