  • This is 2nd part of the ACI Aquaculture video from my trip to Plant City while back. This part is where Chris talks about his thoughts and theories about full spectrum light source and why he has gone back to metal halide for his farm.
Disclaimer: Keep in mind, he's doing it for particular application as a coral farmer. He says in the video that LEDs are great for regular hobbyists.
Check it out and let me know what you guys think down below.

Chris has some incredible corals and the colors are equally as great. Thanks Richard..

Hey Darren! Thanks for watching, and yes, he does have some incredible corals!

Spot on. Metal halide lit reefs are healthier across the whole ecosystem.

LED fixtures are more attractive and more controllable, but I do appreciate that there may be something about MH and T5 (UV and/or something else)
This UV question is interesting, there does need to be more research to understand exactly what is going on, I suspect that as Chris suggested it may have more to do with the corals themselves but the biome and fauna in our aquariums as well.
I will be waiting to hear how the UV sterilizer use of the tank he discussed turns out.

HALIDES HALIDES HALIDES.... and also T5s! Every day! The KING and QUEEN in the castle!
    Thanks very much!
People hear all this from Chris.
    They hear from Tullio too!
They can't argue because they are facts of results.
His comparison of what is "missing" is only noticeable if he can compare to what he had!!
They are not only facts for farmers though!
The same facts of physics apply to any home system with the right application!!!!!!!
But they won't listen and will still use LEDs! LOL!
Much healthier systems under metal halides and T5s!

A watt is a watt!!! How can people ignore that statement??? You can buy a 300watt LED fixture and you actually won't be able to use all those watts because you will be burning your corals before they can even survive any adaptation! But you can put a full spectrum 400W metal halide over that tank and see the corals smiling and thanking you forever, growing profusely and very healthy!!!! It's about the quality of light, the photons produced from a light source with the spectrum from UV to IR! Just like the sun! UV and IR are also utilized in photosynthesis!!! People need to wake up and observe nature to try to reproduce what corals have in the ocean, with a perfect representation for closed systems. Did you know corals come from the ocean and depend on the direct or indirect (sky light) sunlight to metabolize and thrive?
We have beautiful tanks under LEDs. Corals can grow and even reproduce under them. LEDs are very limited in many ways, but the corals have a tremendous ability to survive the conditions and adapt very well. In the long run they will get to a survival mode and loose a lot of what they are naturally able to produce and metabolize from a wider spectrum light. Even though the LOOK colorful and "healthy". That decline occurs naturally and people won't notice. Or they won't know better anyway because they never saw that specimen under the sun or under halides to be able to compare. So the corals will change their natural shape of their colonies. They will die under and have tissue recession and people think they have STN. They will show different colors than when in the ocean because the production of pigments is compromised and limited. But they will LOOK great, right?
People will waste a lot of money with additives to try "feed" their corals while the truth is that the light is what needs to be addressed. But the corals will fight and try to adapt in that survival mode that "looks great".
Sure everyone needs to be respected for their choices and personal preferences. Both ways. This is just a hobby. At the end of the day each to their own tastes.
The only bad thing about all this is that metal halides have been bombarded by this market as a villain and the LEDs promoted as the "best", stepping on halides and T5s with the propaganda, as basically the only good alternative for reef light. That needs to stop. That is the main reason why we have the lack of metal halide gear in the market.
    End of rant. LOL!
I can't give 2 likes to this video, but I can post 2 comments. Ha! Thanks very much, Richard!!!

Respect other people’s choices. Doesn’t seem like such a difficult concept. 🙌
