  • The care of an aneurysmal hemorrhage or subarachnoid hemorrhage patient is incredibly complex, daunting, and sometimes traumatic for a family. Dr. Spiotta, Dr. Snelgrove and critical care nurse Kitty Toth explain what a patient and family will experience in the ICU after a brain aneurysm rupture up to when they are discharged. This webinar is to help family members get the knowledge they need to feel less overwhelmed and more educated so they can focus on caring for their loved one.
    TIMESTAMPS
00:30 Introduction to the MUSC Health team: Dr. Alex Spiotta, Dr. Dan Snelgrove and Kitty Toth, CCRN.
02:53 The team describes the complex process of being in the ICU with a brain aneurysm rupture, who is on the medical team and what roles do they play in your family members care. Brain aneurysm rupture care is daunting for the family, but effective care begins with the patient and family in the center.
09:30 Understand what you’ll see and experience in the room of a brain aneurysm ruptured patient. This includes key equipment, machines and what they do.
14:44 Take a deep dive into the day to day journey a patient and family will take during the first days after a rupture through discharge and continued recovery.
26:16 Three main procedures that your loved one may go though in the ICU.
27:26 Get an in-depth understanding of a normal brain CT scan vs. one after a subarachnoid hemorrhage and hydrocephalus (abnormal buildup of fluid in the ventricles (cavities) deep within the brain)
30:22 Learn more about an external ventricular drain.
34:43 Hear about available brain aneurysm treatments.
36:35 Understand what a vasospasm is and how is it treated.

Great information. I survived SAH Sept 2023 and doing well. The doctor and nurses in ICU helped me understand what happened when I wasn’t able to ask the questions. The nursing team was constantly checking on me and my husband who was scared! There were 3 aneurysms, one rupture, two non ruptures. Six month angiogram shows rupture healed well, other 2 have grown. Many options ahead for the moment I feel so blessed for all the persons who watched over.

@@universe-Universe-1 It took 2 years for me to get back to work and I'm still recovering. I saw a video where it took a doctor 8 years to fully recover. It's different for each of us, the important thing is to let the healing take it's own pace and to be supported for as long as is needed. Blessings to your mum. 🤍

I had a SAH in Nov 2020, the UK was in lockdown. I slept lots and muddled thro for 2 wks until I then went to the eye hospital and finally got bloods done. The bloods were repeated and I ended up having another stroke in Dec and was hospitalised. Mine were due to endocarditis. I’m very lucky to be alive!!

I had a burst aneurysm 10 years. Out of nothing I had an incredible headache I never experienced before. My ex wife left me lying unconcious. The next day when I woke I still had the headache and I went to the doctor on my bike. My back and neck were hurting as well. The doctor sent me home with painkillers, that didn't help. I didn't sleep for five days because of pain so I went back to the doctor, another doctor who sent me to hospital. I got a lumbal punction and one found I had a hemorrhage. I was taken straight to intensive care and had churgery next morning. I had serious vasospasm. I was lucky I survived. No one took me serious. Very traumatic.

My husband is a SAH survivor. His happened at the worst time, during COVID in November 2020. He was 54 years old at the time. He had all the typical signs of the aneurysm, really bad headache first, then vomiting several times and stiff neck. But we didn't know what this was, so he just stayed in bed. Then finally one night, he collapsed on the floor in a coma. I called 911 and the ambulance took him to the local hospital. After doing the CT scan, they saw the bleeding in the right frontal cortex. They rushed him by ambulance to UHN Toronto Western Hospital in Canada, which is well known worldwide for neurology. I was a basket case, so worried that I was going to lose my husband, because I heard that many people die from ruptured aneurysms. And as was said here, when I went into the ICU to visit him, I was overwhelmed with what I saw... Tubes coming out of his body in many places, he had the ventilator, and he was sedated to keep him calm, but he still looked scared. There were many complications. He experienced the vasospasms mentioned here. His aneurysm was a different kind, so he had to stay in the hospital for monitoring. The aneurysm had a wide neck, so the coils he had fell out of the aneurysm and within 2 months of the first coiling, he bled again. They recoiled it , but this time, they put a stent under the aneurysm to keep the coils in place. He still could not come home because he had many other complications because of all the medications he was on, bleeding stomach ulcers, which caused anemia, and other serious issues. All told, he was in the hospital for 6 long months. He was lying in bed so much there, that his leg muscles atrophied, and he could not walk. Even when he finally was discharged and came home, he could not walk. But once he came home, that's when his recovery really took off. He fully regained all his memories, speech and his abilities and agility. He walks a bit different because his balance isn't back 100%, but that's it. It's almost like nothing happened to him. We are both very thankful for that. We also thank the team at the hospital for taking such great care of him and keeping me posted about everything they were doing for him.

Be there for your husband as much as you can, talk to him, hold his hands and kiss his forehead and cheeks. That is very important and it will help him to recover.

My first aneurysm got brust in 2020 so pterional craniotomy and microvascular clipping was done. To prevent brusting of my second aneurysm stent (flow divertor) was implanted in 2022 but after somedays it got blocked and gave me ischemic stroke. Now I have 2 clips in brain's left hemisphere &1 stent in brain's right hemisphere.

My mom ,77 age on hypertension medicine , who was our everything after my father's death due to cerebral haemorrhage 34 years ago . She suffered aSAH on june 21 st , taken to super speciality hospital in ambulance , on 24 th non invasive coiling surgery ,she lost consciousness after the surgery , stroked again , opened eyes for a second after 6 days, silent aapiration, spo2 decreased suddenly one day ,emergency icu, caught pnemonia patch , antibiotics , tracheostomy , breathing normal after that luckily, shifted back to hometown in icu ambulance on 14 th july hospital with minimum oxygen 2 litres, admitted for nursing care and rigourous physiotherapy, but wrongly admitted with 40 % mechanical ventilation , tjis is tge turning point to worsening. pleural effusion, edema, broncho pneumonia , septic shock etc ..lost the battle on 23 rd july . Was it necessary to undergo surgery when she was conscious talking after SAH . Conservative therapy is better ! Say no to hospitalisation for surgery __is the lesson i leant . Our body heals itself ..it knows!! Trust your body !!
