  • 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1 vs 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 (Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race)
The first car is a 1970 Buick GSX. These cars could be had with the routine 455ci engine, or the 455 Stage 1. Did I mention it has over 500 lb-ft of torque? Yeah, it does. It's opponent is also SUPER cool, but also very under appreciated. We're talking about a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, but it's not the 454, it's a SS396. Specifically, it's the L34 with 350 horsepower. Not too shabby. I'll gladly put it in my garage if the owner would like to gift it to me.
Both of these cars participate in the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race series, so make sure you check them out on fb and/or their website. Here are the rules:
For 1955 to 1979 musclecars built in United States and Canadian assembly plants with a minimum warranty of 12 months and 12,000 miles.
Any car running faster than 11.50 will be disqualified and will not have a qualifying time recorded.
Any convertible running faster then 13.50 will be disqualified and will not have a qualifying time recorded.

The valve train must be factory stock for the year, make, and horsepower claimed.
The ignition system must be stock, including the distributor, cap, coil, and wires. Points may be replaced with any electronic conversion that fits under the stock distributor cap.
The carburetor must be correct for the year, make, and horsepower claimed. Jetting and metering changes are permitted. THE CHOKE ASSEMBLY MUST BE IN PLACE AND FUNCTIONAL!
Cast-iron exhaust manifolds are mandatory and must be correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed. Internal modifications to the exhaust manifolds are NOT allowed. I have been a Buick guy for well over 40 years. I have a close friend with a rotisserie restored Saturn Yellow GSX, with about 500 miles on it since a total restoration. It is basically a new car. Buick fudged the horsepower numbers of the 455 A LOT!! But it is the torque numbers that are really astonishing.

and that 510 number came at the very low rpm of 2800; when i was 16 i got my first stage one. i ruined lots of hyped cars image around town. looking all bad assed and really most of the time the mods where small and all about the look. only very serious cars where up too racing a big block Buick. especially when my dad started to put it into a insane modification experiments. roller cam and rockers ta performance everywhere oiling mods, same with the cooling. and the fuel system, with 900cfm holly ta aluminum intake, Kenny bell pistons massive valves, 10.5, 1 compression was where things start to get fast. and he built and designed a main baring girdle as well. it was a tried and true 492 ci build. long before it was well known to many engine builders in our time and especially when you consider we live in north battleford Saskatchewan Canada. we basically killed everything for miles back then. well except for our really close friends 69 gtx. that car was retarded. no one even came close to it. not even us. what he had done to that 440 was pure evil. this car and ours would find money races and we made out pretty great. never lost on the streets and sask is a place were farmer kids spend tones on cars. that car turned us into racers and to this day i drive a 69 skylark custom special. this car is like a brand new car. never a dint or scratch. interior with black everything on silver gauges and shift council is no different. with the grip and most of the top of it also being the same mettle looking silver, on black. it looks like a 1500 mile car in and out. pure buick good looks with the swooping body work and rear bumper that screams exotic muscle. oh and fully functional , real, ram air system that works at hi speeds lending an extra 10 -20 hp at and above 100 mph. black vinyl top with a repaint on the body. i painted it myself and it is perfection. 2008 corvette yellow. bear-claw discs all around with 4 piston calipers. modern suspension upgrades everywhere and also i have replaced all bushings with polyurethane ones. this is the best handling muscle car i have ever known. oh ya. electronic dump gaits. on true 4 inch pipes. from here i am committed to buying the new block from ta.performance. the 4 bolt aluminum block that they bought the rights to build. a few years ago the Buick engineer that brought us a stage 1 and 2 was working on a new engine for motorsports . this was the mill that would have made Buick a race championship juggernaut. project x it was called. look it up.

The only reason Chevys got lots of attention was because they were cheap & parts were very plentiful!!! The only really good stock Chevy engine were the 327's,396's, & the 409's. The early 350's & 454's were oil burners & the 305's had cam issues!!! The Mopar 426 hemis & Ford 429 Bosses kicked Chevys ass all the time in the earlier NASCAR days!! Chevys never won shit until they put restrictor plates on the Hemis & Boss engines. Richard Petty ( Plymouth 426 hemi ) & David Pearson ( Mercury Cyclone 429 Boss ) dominated with about 300 wins just between them!!! Just a little history lesson!!!

The biggest giveaway that Buick fudged the numbers on their 455 was the same base non stage 1 455 was rated at 370hp in the bigger luxo cars like the electra and riviera. And because insurance premiums were on the rise with young buyers of badass muscle cars, they started downplaying HP a bit. It's kind of brilliant what most automakers did. They just took the HP rating at a lower rpm. Yeah, it certainly does make 360hp at 4800rpm. It also certainly makes 400+hp at 5500 rpm. Insurance companies didn't give a damn about torque, as you can tell.

    • @7REDDRACO7

Yes insurance and government were paranoid about top speed and the ability to out run a police car, and its just all impossible, they only looked for a way they could tout it , as a so called 'reason' to gouge money and squeeze money from anyone any way possible , and that is their only goals, its all they are about.

In 1969, GM punched the 396 to 402 cubic inches. This was my first year working for a Chevrolet dealership and the start of a very long career. The reason for this was actually one of economics. If you are old enough to remember 1970, you will remember that Chevrolet introduced a new engine besides the 454. It was the 400 fat block. That my friends was the 402 cubic inch 396. The reason that this was marketed as a 400 instead of the 396 was simply to get rid of the backlog of engines and to make the public think that they were buying something new and not an engine that had been around since 1965. They continued to use this engine in many vehicles through the 1972 model year in both cars and trucks. In 73, it was also replaced by the 454.

With slicks, mild cam, headers and Edelbrock intake with 780 Holley you’d get 12.70’s. I drove the 1970 SS Chevelle with this setup to Earnest W. I knew the Stage 1 car would win in all 3 races, but was impressed with how the Chevelle performed, especially in the 2nd race. For a 350 horse engine, it did a great job. Sadly, the driver got too anxious to win and launched too high in the 3rd race. "Spinnin' ain't winnin." I think if it was geared in the 3:55 range, the SS would have performed quicker for its torque-curve. The GSX may be argually the quickest muscle-car of the ara, but I think, because of its price and much higher sales numbers, the 396 Chevelle was the King of the Street. There were faster cars, but more Chevells out there winning on the boulevards.

The reason for not changing the badging on the 1970 chevelle. Years prior the spent bundles of money on the 396 advertising they didn't want start all over with just boring them out to 402 cubes to produce some extra horses, so they retained the expensive prior advertising of the 396 badging with a few extra ponies, and torque numbers being pushed out.

Chevrolets other than Camaros and Vettes are fast light but dull. That GSX is a stunner and a comfotable boulevard cruiser. In this form of racing, the lighter cars have an advantage. The heavier Buick needs more tire to get moving out of the hole.

    More like 75 Hp more
The GSX had it's work cut out for it.

The 3rd run was more typical of how these cars ran on polyglass tires. I can't figure out how these cars turn the times they are getting with stock motors on stock tires. I find these E.T.'s a little suspect. I was there back in the late 60's early 70's at the drag strips and the E.T.'s were a lot closer to what the magazines were getting than what they are running at this track. It could be the traction material they are using today at the tree is much better.
