      One of the first things I had to do to my sister's 2000 MBZ E320 4MATIC (AWD) after she bought it. One front shaft seal was leaking. Fortunately you can replace these with the transmission still installed. No axle flange, axle inserts into the side with locking circlip

    Heya very interesting to watch if the seal is worn, but what if there is a groove in the actual flange shaft where the seal rides on/around/against?
    As I have taken the stub axle flange out and the seal looks great but there is a ridge/slight indent on the axle flange?

    My passenger side Axle leaks a lil bit from that part where the differential is, I guess that is the problem!! Thank you but Can one do that job with the transmision mounted in the car??

      Can definitely be done with transmission still in car. I had it out for the clutch.

    after installing the flange back in transmission, can we wiggle/move the flange a little bit up-down-in-out-around it's location? if we can move it a little bit, is it normal free flange?

    Mechanic Stuff: Would you know if the rear differential input shaft flange seal is the same part as the one you are changing? I am in the process of tackling a 98 A6 Quattro. Oil leaks from both the front diff output and rear diff input shaft flanges. Funny thing is the rear flange is held by a large nut (36 mm?) rather than the torx bolt as is in the front. I am a bit skeptical about taking the nut off from the rear. Not sure if there is anything significant about such a large nut. Could you shed some light? Thank you.

      I believe the seals are the same, between the front and rear. VAG is pretty good about parts interchanges, same on my 1986 944 even. Of course this only applies to manual transmissions. I'm aware that I'm 2 years late here.

    Bro I have axle flange play on the left side, suspecting diff bearings. Does diff have to come out to do the bearing?

    When I replaced my axles, the output shaft was bone dry, no grease like yours have. I don't think there is grease to begin with in that area. Did you add it separately?

    • @mechanicstuff7474
      @mechanicstuff7474  4 роки тому

      The section of shaft that is in the differential would be covered in gear oil. A bit of axle is never a bad idea, especially on splines and where it contacts the seal.

    Merry Christmas !!!! My axle flange came out do i need another cir clip it came out? I have the same setup I put the cv axle back on tighten the axle bolt and drive it two feet and it keep coming out and how do I take the cir clip off and put on?

    • @mechanicstuff7474
      @mechanicstuff7474  2 роки тому +1

      Merry Christmas!
      They make these things called "circuit pliers". They basically expand the clip so it will stretch and come off the stub shaft. The clips are springy so they compress themselves back onto the shaft. Replace it if you have a new one. It might also be possible that the axle wasn't inserted deep enough in the transmission for the clip to lock into place. Good luck!

      Gear pullers will only pull a gear/bearing/pulley, if they are mounted on a shaft. That is because they push off in the middle while grabbing the sides.
