Will a usb to ethernet adapter work in this scenario? I feel like it should since it basically turns a USB port into a ethernet port, but maybe the drivers won't allow it. I wanna try build a old PC firewall for my home network. If the usb to ethernet port isn't viable that will tell me to buy an actual ethernet card. But if anyone is reading this can you let me know?
The x86 version of DD-WRT does not support the following features: Ipkg - Itsy Package Management System jffs - Journaling Flash File System USB on the public image. Only the professional licenced version has USB support! USB Storage enough said. Go for open-wrt or get ready to pay 20 bucks for "professional" dd-wrt activation (for no reasons at all, openwrt actually offers way more than dd-wrt)
The embedded router images are great but the pc is wasted on it, better with a quad Intel Ethernet card and pfsense which runs on bsd. You can just put the ddwrt image on a flash drive and boot from that. Or throw a Linux distribution on the hard drive and read up on iptables for all your routing and nat needs, ssh for file transfers (sshfs), samba, nfs or openvpn if you want that, it's endless.
@R3DLIN3S Could you virtualize this setup, and falsh (i've actually never heard the term blow) the .bin file to a virtual hard disk or make a VDI , sort of how you could run an Untangle Server or PFsense ?
can we plug a usb WIFI connect that connects to a 3rd internet wifi source and share it thru another eth port on the system applying firewall ddrwrt firewall rules? thanks
I did it and its working.....but im extremly frustrated because I cant login to the web gui. root /admin dont give me acess. I have cleaned disk and started all over - not working. Thanks for your work!
I thank you for the information I made the whole procedure to the letter and it worked perfectly, install it in an old IBM 32 bits with 1 GB of ram and walk very well congratulations greetings from Venezuela
Hi, this might be difficult in that he clearly showed you need 2 separate ethernet ports. Might be able to use a usb to ethernet dongle, but the ddwrt x86 may not see the USB properly

Nice man ;)
like your video very nice discerption thank you!
Hi, how can i get a "a" image, i don't understand. Thanks.
it's a dd-wrt image he was renaming it for easier to write the image
Dude, your title says "...into a Firewall" but your shaky video is about x86 Router.
because dd-wrt AND openwrt both offers firewall function too
router can act as firewall too
Please, share how build a firewall for a PC where the computer and monitor are one component
