Far North Queensland sees worst flooding in decades

- Far North Queensland is staring down the barrel of a flood emergency not seen in decades in the wake of ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper.
Cairns has seen 100 millimetres of rain since 9am Sunday, however rainfall totals across the weekend exceed half a metre in some areas.
Roads have been turned into rivers, resulting in a number of homes being inundated with water at Holloways Beach, Redlynch and further north in Mossman.
Flights in and out of Cairns Airport have been suspended as the runaway resembles more of a river.
A request for immediate assistance has been made to the Navy as flood levels rise.
The wet season is only just starting! This is what happens in tropical North Queensland
Calm, calm. This is a freak event.
Actually it floods every year in cape York.
It’s these events that are what makes the Bradfield scheme possible. A series of dams and waterways taking this water down through SWQld, through western NSW into the Murray Darling system.
Bradfield designed this over 100yrs ago.
“In decades” so it’s happened before? Wow the way some media & people are carrying on it’s the worst ever🤔
Yes. If it didn't happen then it would be "the climate devastation of El Nino".
Sky news hypes everything. When real data comes out and we can compare it to other events, we'll know how big their lies were this time.
"Thousands of people losing their houses isn't that bad because it's happened before".
You need to hit up Scomos empathy coach.
Ah yes. The Tropics. It does this.
Tropical RAIN forest region I believe its called. For a reason like Shark Bay does not have fluffy wuffy kittens in it.
Media can't let a good scare go to waste.
Floods, bushfires, and droughts, our poets wrote about them 200 years ago. 800 years ago the Aborigines had a drought that lasted more than 3 decades. Over 150 years ago half of Victoria burned when a bushman accidentally lost control of his campfire. And the more we increase our population and expand into the country, it’s bushland, flood plains, and arid regions, the more affected by the climate we will be.
Last weekend I was fighting fire in my neighbours paddocks this weekend we had several meters of water flow through the same paddocks after over a meter of rainfall over three days. Gotta love this country 🤣🍻🇦🇺
The effects of man made climate change from releasing ancient carbon into the environment is increasing the REGULARITY of extreme weather events. This is costing the people involved in these events vastly more than the cost of reducing the release of that ancient carbon and those costs are borne mainly by the less well off.
@@rarsole5270 no, it’s not. That’s not how the climate works. You are parroting activist and politicised science talking points and not reality. Even the last IPCC report clearly stated that there was zero evidence to suggest that there was an increase in climate related disasters due to increasing atmospheric CO2. That includes flooding, wildfires, droughts, cyclones, ect. It’s fear-mongering rubbish pushed to support a narrative to suggest extreme climatic events are increasing in frequency and/or severity. It simply isn’t true.
@@rarsole5270 if you understood anything about Earths geological history and climate you would understand that the CO2 released from fossil fuel use is a fraction of the total CO2 in the atmosphere, and if we are lucky it is enough to stave off a mass extinction event with the next glaciation period where atmospheric CO2 is expected to fall close to 150ppm or less, killing all p,ant life on Earth. The last period saw CO2 deserts as it fell to an average of 180ppm. Plants die below 150ppm. Our atmospheric CO2 has been declining steadily for millions of years and is set to fall to extinction levels of it remains on its current track. Thank God fossil fuels are re-releasing a fraction of that bound up CO2 into the atmosphere. It may just save us all down the line.
OK. Goodbye!@@southern-samurai
Wildlife and stock don’t have a chance either. Hope it gets better real soon.🙏
I thought flooding was illegal in Australia
I have a lot of family all over North Queensland. They are prepped. They’re better at dealing with these weather events than we would in South Queensland because they have gone through so many cyclones 🙏🏾❤️
Innisfail had record flooding with most of the town flooded to some extent. So many houses have Waist deep water, cars floating away.
May God protect the people of Queensland.
Don't let the media scare you. We're fine up here. Of course remote places have stuff happen but they're used to it.
It’s not fine if over 250 houses have taken or have gone underwater 😤😫
Again this is the natural cycle of the far North, and absolutely vital for the region and its wildlife.
I am truly sorry for this tragedy, especially for the animals
@@peterhathaway807 You beat me to it. I'm off to pray with other flakes on here - that fixes everything - thinking hard about something with your eyes closed has worked for thousands of years.
Sharks will think it’s Christmas
Lets have some perspective here. The animals indeed the entire Northern Australian eco system rely on these annual events. They would be much poorer animals without them.
@@raclark2730 That's why we see so many carcases washed down flooded rivers?
@@indiathylane2158 Well that is a boon for aquatic predators and scavengers. Would you rather the rainforest dried up and the rivers stop flowing. No happy animals then. Once again this is how we get our water here. Often all at once.
This is nature.
Worst? This is the best. Since when is rainfall bad?
Congratulations.
No one up here is freaking out. Media loves it.
Go back to school, for everyone's sake 🤦♀️
@@freespirit1411 Hmm, were you taught about the weather cycle of Northern Australia in school. Does not sound like it.
It's bad for our farmers. There's not much news on that yet, but we are all likely to feel the impact of it. I remember back in 2011? Bananas were $22 a kilo!
The Barron falls must be pumped 🎉🎉
Question: How do you run out of water when it’s literally falling from the sky? Stay safe, think smart and help others.
No logic allowed 😅
Must be climate boiling?

@@humbug4478 exactly
I lived in Townsville during the 70's and 80's and it rained sometimes for 2 to 3 days, all day. This is no big deal. Look at where some of these towns and cities are building new estates in low lying areas. Of course you will get flooding.
Ending on supply spikes =
Another excuse for Woolworths & Coles to overcharge the Aussie folk at the supermarket shelves this Christmas.
That's called revenue! 👈🧐
Pay attention people.
Is there no way to capture this water to put to good use later on?
Not unless you are willing to innundate millions of acres of rain forest.
A bucket
Low level walls like what could be pushed up with a bulldozer are unreliable and the water undrinkable very quickly due to bacteria. Even concrete dams of several metres high face the same problems- they have to cover vast areas to be of any value, and sunlight breeds bacteria in the water.
So cost and practicality, we stay with the dams we have- high walls, deep reservoirs and very expensive.
I can honestly say I had scarier storms in Sydney. We're fine up here. No one is scared or freaking out. Leave that to the media.
Where is the PM?
Organising the armed forces to help. At least he’s not in Hawaii sending thoughts and prayers and generally not giving a toss.

Good morning to Mum John and Josh in Cairns Australia 🌏🦘🌏🦘🦘😅
Horrible thought, but I am just glad it isn't the Brisbane River for a change. Love and strength to my great fellows in the North.
Maybe they should start be placing monsoon drains in, it might help some towns but not every one of course. QLD has a lot of low terrain in many places along the east coast and with slow moving lows it just rakes havoc ,lets hope they get though this safely as possible and they get the help they need .

What caused the end of the ice age ? 🤔! Whatever it was , it was for the better ! These controllers don't care at all about the environment only control.
Not likely, this is the wet season in FNQ after all it’s the tropics.
Alarmist spin. You and your lot went from no rain, empty dams and rivers to 'expect more intensity '. At best you are a pack of liars, at worst you are self absorbed psychopaths.
@@jasonjudkins2056yes very likely! For every one degree rise in temperatures, the atmosphere has the capacity to hold around 7% more water vapour. Basic physics. Temperatures have risen nearly 1.5 degrees since pre industrial times. Therefore there is the potential for cyclones, storms etc to bring 10% more rain than previously. This has been playing out now for a number of years with unprecedented floods all over the world. And it will only get worse as temperatures keep rising. And since we’ve most likely already reached “ tipping points” as regards climate change, nothing we do from here on will change anything. Prepare accordingly!!
So saddened to see this. QLD needs a new State government (let’s get Bligh gov out) that will do something to stop this.
Bligh hasn't been premiere for around 13 years mate not sure how a change of govt is going to stop nature. The simple fact is this happens here from time to time and it sucks when it happens but its part of the life we choose when we live here 🍻🇦🇺
Yes, how dare the government not stop a cyclone in its tracks with their bare hands!
@@MetalxLicaxPP I think if drainage or spillway infrastructure planning was improved, flooding of towns would greatly reduced.
@@helenowen5408 But damage could be mitigated if, there was an effort on say, spillway planning, or levies around vulnerable town areas - something to minimize/delay damage of flooding around towns, so people wouldn’t just be left helpless. And for that - thoughtful foresight, you need a new [LNP] government, not under Bligh.
@@david.b4186 It would, yes, but blaming the government for a cyclone flood is silly
