Thank you for bringing a bit of Sao Joao to us! Your smiles, beautiful souls, and gratitude for life come shining through as a reminder of what is most important in life. Obrigada!
I couldn't agree more with your assessment of the feeling of safety in large crowds here in Portugal (versus the opposite feeling in the U.S.). My wife and I just from South Carolina to Braga 2 months ago and have experienced the Braga Romana festival and São João. Its absolutely clear that we've made a good choice to move to Portugal and are starting the work of learning the language, embracing the culture, and exploring our new home. About those Chinese lanterns, there were dozens of them visible floating by in the sky all evening. One of them started a forest fire on a wooded hillside hear our apartment. As beautiful as they are, I really don't think it is worth the risk to life and property.
Thanks for the great comment. Yes, the sky lanterns are amazing while being a bit risky. We hope to get to the Romana festival in Braga. Looks like a whole lot of fun!
It is such a relief to be here in Porto and Portugal. Nothing is perfect. There are challenges. But not living in fear makes the little challenges easy to handle. Bom dia, alegria!
We had s similar experience on our first São João in Portugal this year. We walked down the oceanside to the river from our home in Matosinhos encountering one joyful group of people after another and bopping and getting bopped on the head as people on the beach were launching lanterns and fireworks, etc. It's hard to describe the joy that resonates through this culture. We've never really experienced anything quite like it. Incidentally, Shazam tells me that the song playing at approximately the 16:30 mark is Paz Pás (Funaná) by Némanus. Hope to see you at the Expats Everywhere patrons meet-up next month. Keep up the good work! Thanks for putting in the work to share these experiences with the world.
Our impression is the same! It is fun, crazy, and totally safe. I miss the smell of yummy food on the streets. I have to plan to be there in late June/2024.
You got it right, this is the oldest celebration of the summer Solstice, common to all primitive cultures. It is a celebration of life of bountiful months ahead. The layers over this cosmological announcement of summer are huge. The courtship also makes sense. Children conceived in late June will be born in late April in the middle of Spring...The best favorable time in the year.
Great comment! Obrigado. It's easy to get caught up in our current lives, forgetting to look over our shoulders and remember from where it is we've come.
Let us know if you are planning a visit to Porto. Would love to get together. We lived in Portland for 8 years. It was a great place to prepare for living here in Porto.
@@OurContinuingAdventure Ellen and I are still planning on being in Porto at the beginning of October as per our email conversation from last month. Definitely looking forward to seeing you!
Hi guys great video. This looks like fun. I really should try and experience this even though I'm not really a party guy. I will look into maybe coming back twice next year one of the visits in June. I'm not sure if i can get back again this year. It might be difficult financially.

Looks like so much fun! In contrast, there were at least 18 mass shootings over the long weekend July 1-4 in the US. I can’t wait to move to Portugal.
