This is such a fascinating map. The permanently missable secret (after 30 seconds), the Arch-Vile that can open the red skull door, the semi-broken teleporter secret, the two computer area maps (which I assume was to perfectly duplicate that room), and the lonely tech pillar: all very notable.
And interestingly, one of my DOOM II favorites (somehow)
Very memorable overall. The big room of skewered bodies. The monster closets upon monster closets. The weird stair in the lava pit. The fights in tight spaces with many enemy types. The room where you go into another dimension or something and the Mancubi are back (I see you already mentioned that one)
The room sectors were probably copied and pasted. I assume the tooling let you do that back then
Okay, I missed the missable secret (because he did not mention it), but went back and realised what you were talking about.
It's been argued that map16 was the original "my house" wad because Sandy based one of the buildings on where he used to live. But he also said he based the library portion of map27 on a nightmare he used to have, so between that, the teleporter that seems to bring you to the same place, and the music that's simultaneously cozy and unsettling, you could also argue he made the precursor to that more recent "my house" wad that's been so popular lately.
That wad is monumental
Man, if we could get Decino (someone who actually plays Doom really well) to play that WAD, it would be awesome!
@@jameslangridge1674 I'm not sure if playing Doom well is a skill in any way relevant to myhouse...
For his magnum don- Wait, wrong show
OHHH oh WHOOPS. Oh no. I dropped my monster condo that I use for my magnum dong.
A man of culture i see, also you forget the Sandy peterson?, gdamit quote (?
🥚
Monster…Condo. Boy, I’d like to live in one of those!
We are all just swimming in Decinos wake. It’s a delicate ecosystem.
This is and Spirit World are my fav maps of Doom II. It's just so fun to few have levels where the mapper gives you alot of invulnerability spheres to just go on a rampage against big group of heavy demons. Also all the quirkiness and weird settings just mak it even more fun lmao
Hey decino, back in 2001 there was a news program here in Brazil talking about violent games and how they could influence your children. This map was used as an example, specially the part with hanged bodies.
The times and peoples change, and yet they also don't.
Brazilian media being Brazilian media. It's more toxic and worthless than all of Twitter merged into one single account.
genuinely don't know why more people don't watch these, pretty entertaining and chill!
Genuinely I don't understand why is this so entertaining. I don't have time for this yet I need to watch it.
Nostalgia. That’s why
Perhaps it's because of the commentary stuff. Some people just prefer it when games are done the Star Marshal/patologTV/Zevik way and so on.
But strangely enough, I am *one of them, and I actually love watching these.*
Both the 30 second and the half-broken secrets reminds me to remind you that we're still looking forward to the follow up on the linedef analysis video. Great work as always and glad to know we have the same favourite map.
On that note, I hope someday decino can be arsed into making a very basic introductory analysis on ACS and how much cool stuff you can put on maps with it, such as examples from his viewer submissions. I know it's not-just-slightly departed from vanilla Doom, but when used sparingly and wisely, ACS can _really_ enhance the experience in ways that Boom features either take much more work to perform, or cannot pull off at all.
I think this is my favorite level from the game: good fights, chill, lots of power ups even a mirror room, good to try some rare wads
My favourite map in doom 2. The atmosphere, with those dark rooms, ton of hanging corspes, the layout, everything is absolutely good. The music is the cherry on the cake, this map wouldn't be the same without it. I think this map is called Monster Condo because it's filled with monster closets.
Just finished my UV+ run and wow it's so much more challenging. Couldn't imagine doing nightmare, I like to take it slow baby.
When your video lands I'm like 'oh this maps really challenging'
Decino: 'as well know this is a short and easy map lmao'
Me: 😢
I've had more hearts from Decino than kisses from my wife.
Well on Nightmare you get double ammo, which is always nice.
The room with the hanged bodies is my favorite DOOM thing. It left such an impression on me the first time i saw it, even though both DOOM and DOOM 2 have plenty of other body horror and torture displays here and there.
I dont know if it was this one (and maybe it happened in the psx port, i dont remember lol) or one where you press a switch and suddenly there is a big room with hanged bodies but i remember i turned around got jumpscared when seeing it for the first time, it was cool and i miss that horror vibe in the new Dooms
One of the most memorable maps in Doom II, one of Sandy best works in general (don't care about that infamous secret) and one of my personal favs.
The atmosphere in this map resonates with me the most. The lighting, the loyaout, the monster placement and the beautiful track makes Monster Condo something special.
Thank you Decino. I really enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for all the nice hours!
That moment you had a stare contest with the lost soul with your rocket launcher in hand got me TENSE
I'm pretty sure decino's said "Thanks Sandy" in every Sandy map so far lol
That timed secret you have to rush to at the start was something that haunted me for years as a kid. It wasn't until very long ago when I started getting back into classic Doom again in around 2016 that I realised how it works!
I still can’t figure it out! Do tell.
I've been watching speedruns for so long, I have completely forgotten that any amount of level even existed.
Never realized how much of the map is just... lonely and quiet if you avoid certain linedefs and don't shoot until you get to the Pain Elementals. Interesting.
Probably the most unflattering map in all Doom 2. The fact that you don't have any encounter for some time at the beginning, the library, the music and that room full of bodies, all of them contribute to mount up the tension.
Man this map just got better & better by looking at the amazing details they put out here! Congrats on getting the broken secret just by line-def skip! Yeah very generous with Soulsphere's, Partial Invisibilies, and Invuns as well! Overall an awesome map and I do think it's perfect in every way! Well done! 👏
Man, on my livestream I just gave up on that teleport skip after like 5 minutes without success. I also didn't realize that you couldn't pick up two area maps until then. Two points of frustration. Haha
I didn't know about that tech pillar either. Nor did I know that you could crash the game by blocking the door on that first secret. I really need to read the wiki on these maps! There's so much I keep learning!
One of Sandy's best Doom II maps, despite the jank secret and the unobtainable map.
To be fair he was trying to mimic the rooms for effect so putting two makes sense in that sense.
@@TheGuyWhoIsSitting I mean, yes, but I'm sure some completionists out there aren't too thrilled about that
3:06 in case anyone want to skip to when decino tags the secret
bump but imho should be in timestamps lol
Man, that secret closing after 30 seconds - didn't know about it until the 00's. How could anyone possibly guess there's such a thing in the level? The only thing worse than it is the two computer maps - in vanilla Doom, this means it's impossible to ever get 100% Items. And no, IDBHELDA doesn't help - the computer map cannot be "turned off" in vanilla. The first game's E1M8 also had two computer maps in earlier versions (1.0 - 1.2), but this wasn't such a big deal because there's no tally screen when the level is beaten ;)
This map has two light-amp visors out of 5 total in the game (the other 3 are all in MAP10).
BTW, I've always loved the library part of this map - I can imagine the demons studying some really nasty dark sorcery in there.
I've always found this map cozy, and I'm not really sure way... maybe because it has the word "condo" in it lmao. The thought of Doom monsters living peacefully in a giant condo in Hell... hilariously devilishly wholesome.
Its really great seeing decino have a good time playin, especially after the abandoned mines fiasco. have a good one, pumpkin man, cheers
in the ps1 version they sort of fixed that secret by just removing that secret tag in the teleporter, so instead of 8 secrets they are 7. Also the time locked secret is changed to a normal opening wall
As much I love psx Doom and it's my favorite version of the game overall, that version of Monster Condo is really a downgrade in terms of gameplay and atmosphere.
Gameplay because the og M.C is one of the levels that features almost all the non-boss monsters in the roaster, except Cacodemons. But in psx doom due the VRAM limitation the level lose its Arachnotrons, Chaingunners, Barons of hell, Mancubus, Pain Elementals and Archviles.
@@quiver5756 the whole psx version is a downgrade, but still its my favorite too cuz it was my first doom i had (i didnt have a pc or knew how to download a source port lmao). the music and atmosphere was on top, levels like e2m2, e2m1, e1m2, e2m6, etc. feel kinda spooky and darker.
6:06 - In Doom (E1M8) (versions from 1.4) the extra computer area map in the star is swapped for another shotgun pickup.
One of my favorite video game levels of all time.
The instrumental version of This Love(Pantera) fits so well with this map.
Push me! Push me! Yeeeeeah.
Dang, you nasty! XD
Me: NOOOO, one item left!!!
Then realize the computer map bug.
Thank Sandy.
Puts into perspective how amazing all those unintentional linedef skips were.
I find this map annoying but still memorable
Like this map quite a bit, because of the "Waiting for Romero to play" music (first time at Courtyard), easily my favourite in DooM II, these strange things with seemingly incomplete secret (and item - more on that below tho) and also that overall look and feel that suits it.
As for grabbing the second Computer Area Map - in a strictly vanilla Crispy Doom source port, one can type in idbehold0 (zero at the end), to negate all of the currently active powerups (including the ones that last until the end of the map, like the Map and technically, also Berserk) and pick up the other one Map in that 'mirrored' room. So it's possible to have 3x100% here also outside of coop (or "single coop"). Doesn't feel like a cheat, as it downgrades the player (unless Partial Invisibility power_down_ is active), thus could be a viable solution actually.
One of my favorite maps of all the Doom games. if you know where and what to do its not that hard of a map even on nightmare but so fun anyway. Map 28 is next, and one step closer to see how Decino will deal with Map 29 :D
This is the level where my brain goes "yeah, we are on the endgame now". Also, this level reminds me A LOT of a Marathon 1 level called Welcome to the Revolution (and a little but of Try Again), I don't know why, they do share some minor elements, like a pool in the middle of a large room with stairs, but that's about it. Maybe because I played both a lot back in the day and things get mixed up in my rapidly aging brain.
*laughs at brain because of plot stuff in The Plutonia Experiment, Doom 64, and more especially DOOM 2016 and Eternal*
To this day I'm still astounded by how chaotic this map is on Nightmare. Really breaks the standard feel and turns into a new experience.
Tech pillar spotted 👀
When I used to sit down to play DOOM II as a kid, I would almost always start with this map. Very memorable, very fun.
Same. This and The Living End. They're so cool even today.
Since Doom 2 on nightmare is about to end, what's the plan for next? Will you also be doing Final Doom on nightmare?
Doom 2 would be remembered much more fondly if there were more atmospheric maps like this instead of the filler we got.
The darkness and spooky OST when playing on PlayStation as a kid was a proper horror experience that is hard to describe.
Item placement in Sandy's maps is rather awkward, in all fairness. Someone either didn't give him the memento of how the items are supposed to behave, a genuine troll, or a bad map designer.
I guess I'll do for a bit of all.
I always found this level janky and surreal. You're approaching the inner depths of hell after going through haunted mines and out of nowhere there is a trippy condo?
I can never look at this map and not remember that run at GDQ where the archville instead of opening doors just said screw it and teleported away...
love this MIDI in this map, so good and fits this level. Hooray to the skipping linedef, as this made the video longer :D
by the way, so many tricks you shown here, wow!
Decino: "Not the most exciting footage" when trying to get the broken teleporter secret.
Me: *Laughing my ass off seeing Decino attempt to unlock the secret numerous times*
It hardly seems fair. These monsters are just hanging out in their condo and then this rando comes in all invincible and blasting rockets.
Finally!
I was today years old when I learned about Doom 2’s only tech pillar. Always loved the aesthetics of this map 🧡🍿
I love the irony of the one tech pillar being in hell when there was a good amount of techbase before.
Ah, MAP27 Monster Condo. My 2nd favorite Id-maxe Classic DooM map. And yes, I also sometimes miss that red key as well in all the chaos :D
I like this level, i think it has a great creepy atmosphere, all of these later levels were scary when i played them as a kid
What is a Monster Condo? No really. It just seems to troll my brain because it always wants to add an M to end.
Oops, I dropped my Monster Condo that I use for my magnum dong.
1:52 Rare example footage of past Decino being better than future Decino by getting the secret first try lol
A happy decino video. Much needed after the farcical last map. And I never get tired of seeing this level's quirkiness.
6:32 When do we get a supercut of you roasting this poor Sandy person?
Oh so PAIN elementals dont respawn in doom ?! Or were you just kinda lucky with the respawn time
ua-cam.com/video/38ZyMEPUAb4/v-deo.html
Ah ok i see, they only respawn if they get crushed by something. If u just kill'em they get deleted from the game. Thank you decino
WHOOPS I DROPPED MY MONSTER CONDO THAT I USE FOR MY, MAGNUM DONG
Man the living conditions for the hidden imps in the starting area are awful. What a monstrous condo indeed.
That broken secret! 😬
You gotta love the untextured wall you have to look at every time he attempts to enter the secret sector
Sandy making BMD angry.
The room with the pain elementals and the broken secret is probably the most disturbing area of any Doom level.
Love this map, I've been waiting for this playthrough.
Fun fact: for years I thought the first secret was glitched and unreachable, not knowing the walls were on a timer. I still remember the first time I got it legitimately after reading that you just needed to get there quickly! Thanks for the entertaining video and stay safe out there!
I got a bit lost in this map first time I played it last year.
As a kid, I used to just play the Simpsons version of these games because of being creeped out by the hanging dead bodies
Taking the teleporter over and over again feels like a carnival ride.
this map without the invuln would be hell
Be ballsy with pain elementals? Meatballs? Bless the puns. Love this map too. Great dark atmosphere. Had loads of fun on it with multiplayer. I loved the identical rooms; was such a surprise initially.
One of my favorites, as well.
Man this map is very memorable because of kingdime wasting so much time getting the archvile to open the exit. Also i legit thought this was map 25 instead of memefalls. It is such an odd map but has some charms to it.
98% because of the computer item? It’s okay you take that extra 2% you get from kills and give it to items!
Btw I always found this level creepy. Maybe because of the music + how the level is mapped. + I was 10 when I first played this.
I'm surprised you made no mention of the door around the secret at 0:19 that permanently closes 30 seconds after level start. I thought that was a unique feature of the map. Is it just so well known that you thought it isn't noteworthy?
Everybody knows about it at this point.
He's already touched over it a few too many times on the channel.
Ahhh Monster Condo this is map were barney the archvile lives yep. As for the map, well is a weird hellish architecture map design but unlike other strage looking architecture maps designs, this is one more enjoyable and as you said in the video on Nightmare is decent athought I spend more finding all the secrets than any else Lmao xD. I'm looking forward for Map 28 The Spirit World
Well, after watching these attempts to skip the linedef, I think you should make video about some movement tricks and, in particular, about the P_SlideMove() function. I think I didn't see such one on your channel.
SR and SR50
Skip glides and squeeze glide and why it's hard to perfrom.
Linedef skips and why it works only while you move to south/west and DOESN'T work when you move to north/east.
Grabs.
Wallrunning, "thingrunning" (see run alongside the barrels below on MAP23) and "air control" (see a very strange move in air to the exit on MAP14).
Void glides.
"Ellastic collisions", when things are bumping you backward. (It happened with me sometimes on MAP08 in the final room, when the door just pushed me back to the acid pit).
When I want to get a line def skip I can’t to save my life. When I don’t want to get a line def skip, boy howdy I can’t stop getting them.
Another great vid/ guide. Thank you! Been looking for that last secret and optimal routes and this helped!
3:03: Lucky the area once only guarded by those expendable meatball and fire-skeletal annoyances.
Redundancies are WANTING to be patched out.
7:42: Small wonder why some suspect the map title is a typo.
It got a bit erotic at the end...
One of Sandy's strangest. I think it serves its purpose of being a challenging late-game map.
4:33 - We'll just call this a shoutout to Coincident hitting 20,000 subscribers ;)
Good use of the invul spheres. Btw, I think that it's ready the TNT Evilution Megawad made by memory, I hope you want to play it!
Alternate name, "Massive Don". Means "Big Mr." In Spanish.
To be fair i always found it a little boring, maybe because this was be the least played map for me, but is very interesting. possibly im the one who is wrong
PD: that juicy facerocket and red key, this was one of the most relaxed maps you played xd
I don't know, maybe i'm that person but getting broken secret with line-skip was weirdly enternaiting for me to watch. Congrats, decino!
MAP 27 Monster Condo is an easy level but the part where the mancubus and revenant in those two room. Also not one-hundred-percent the items . Sad ☹️
Agreed, also one of my top favorites of Doom 2 along with Maps 18, 28, 23, 8 and 9. I think this would be my top 5 (well 6) maps of this game. And it really is just a coincidence that my favorite music from Doom 2 also comes from maps 18/27, 28, 23 and 9.
Such a fun run with fun facts I knew and didn't know about - 2 computer area maps - 100% completionists can go to hell lol, skipping linedef for a secret sector trigger, only tech pillar in Doom 2 (I didn't know this one) also it's used in a map that really isn't a techbase lol.
Just love the combo of ominious dark library, room with many many corpses, the deja vu - 2 same rooms. Goood stuff.
To be completely fair, Sandy was not a programmer, so you should be thanking John instead about the computer area maps.
Sandy a Mormon so we know beyond a shadow of a doubt drugs weren't a factor in his making of this level.
Love me some Sandy and Love me some Decino!
"Woops, I dropped my monster condo*, that I use for my MAGNUM DONG"
Remember. When you want the best in life you gotta be willing to fire a rocket point blank to get it.
Decino, probably. Idk. Leave me alone
Oh whoops! I dropped my monster condo. Which I use for my magnum....rocket!
That linedef skip would be a lot harder if there were respawning enemies in that room
Going after the pain elementals is a 1000000 IQ play. Such big wrinkle brain.
It's a fun level when the whole idea is monster closets of multiple designs and traps
Sandy made some of the worst Doom 2 maps... But also some of the best. Monster Condo is the highlight of the final episode, imo.
This map is always a challenge for me. Something about it just... ugh... 🙄
Also, you've got 2% extra on the kills, so it makes up for the 98% items, evening it off.
That secret holy s__t man that was awesome the way u did that
Also only you are good enough to get 98% items ona broken map on nightmare and still have the health to get plasma balled in to the exit 😅😂
Imagine how difficult it must have been to do the lindef skip without a Secrets counter... you'd never know if you actually did trigger it until the end :D
There's an audio cue and a message on the screen that a secret has been revealed.
@@1pcfred
That's only in source ports and they borrowed the sound and message from Quake.
Back in my days with Final Doom, you didn't know if something was a secret. You just got a score if you did find any.
@@stylesrj that was then and this is now. The source ports we have today are far better than the original engine was.
@@1pcfred
Which is why I'm saying imagine if someone was playing the game back when it first came out or was using the launcher of Final Doom or something and thus had none of those counters. If there was a linedef skip, you'd never know if you triggered it until the end of the level (or if you looked into the code)
@@stylesrj I didn't play the game when it first came out. I played it a couple years later. The code wasn't available then.
