Visited Cape Wrath with my old man back in 1988. Took the 'ferry' over the Kyle of Durness, then an old Sherpa minivan up to the lighthouse. I remember it being the roughest 'road' I think I've ever been on. No facilities at the Cape back then. I seem to remember there was a derelict army barracks but can't seem to find any information about it now. Would love to go back, maybe I'll take my kids there someday.....
The bombing range reminds me a bit of walking along the Lulworth coastline in Dorset where the boom of the Challenger tanks practice firing can be heard for miles.
Nice one Ray, not too bad a day to kick off the trail. I've got a similar roller to that and think I'll take mine too to loosen off my ITBs as I can get tightness there. Apparently it's normal to have sore calves, so my old osteopath told me. I've not tried the bigger packs, but you'll need the calories. 👍🏻
Nice one ray. You're very brave walking this trail on your own thought you might have teamed up with someone like the chap from Media Underground. As far as I know he's only done the first half That'll Be the southern half so as you're walking from Kate rathdown I thought you might have joined you the do the top half. Well it is what it is good luck be safe be lucky
Great video Ray, brought back memories of my walk to the Cape and back a couple of years ago. Laughed at the jesus when you used the roller 🤣, looking forward to watching the series.
Great vid. Love this entire remote area. Nearby Durness is my go to, de-stress and relax, favourite location. 1000 mile round trip for me but worth it.
I’ve just come across your channel here by chance. Really enjoyed some of the places you’ve been walking/camping. So much so I’ve subscribed. Cheers Andy
Good to see you out again Ray, Great video! Those expedition food meals are tasty! I used them on the west highland way but i only bought Bolognese so i was sick of it by the end haha. Look forward to the review of the other flavours and the rest of the trip! Cheers, Kris.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Look forward to future episodes. I would love to try something like this but would be a little nervous taking this on alone. Area looks very remote and in real wild country. Sandalwood bay looks awesome, great spot for overnight camp. I assume you had to get more miles under the belt before stopping. 👍
Great video. What beautiful scenery round there. Comes across really well on the vid. Also, good idea to divide your trip into parts - I find that I skip through long videos, but short filums like yours) I watch all the way through. Good stuff!
I think cramp and stiff leg muscles is basically due to poor oxygen supply. Not necessarily poor circulation but often simply due to sitting or lying in a position that constrains the arteries. I find regularly shifting position releases pressure on the arteries and cramp disappears quickly. The other trigger maybe static electricity built up from the body rubbing against modern man made textiles. It's the static that makes our hair stand on end when we get out of bed in the morning. As an experiment, I've gone back to frying food in lard rather than vegetable oils. And amazingly I'm losing body fat. It's like my body is saying that if I give it animal fat then it won't bother storing it anymore. Carbs and sugar seem to be fat building foods.
Having seen your Facebook post I'm on tenterhooks here waiting for the beginning of the storm. Sandwood Bay looks awesome. I was supposed to be heading up that way at the end of May to wild-camp there and maybe also do Suilven if conditions were decent but the situation meant a postponement. ATB, Chris
Nice one Ray, a good start, what an amazing place! I concur on the meals they are excellent, I used them on MdS and they kept me going! Is that a Gossamer G4-20? Just bought one, your review would be useful. Keep sharing please. Stay well.
As mentioned there is no marked trail as such. Lots of cross country and bog hoping. The Trail maps are a guide to the routes to take and you need to have good navigation skills in all conditions for some sections. Atb
You cant get them as they are not made any more. It was for forestry workers and a few supply shops used to sell them. However have heard of folks making there own using safety glasses you can remove the lenses. Just buy a midge hood, take lenses out of the glasses and put frames inside the hood. Pop lenses in and then trim around the net.
As an old unfit man I suffered from a 8 day recovery when I trained in Aikido until my beloved fitness fanatic daughter told me to take protein powder AND BCAA (Branch Chain Amino Acids, the 4 amino acids for the building blocks of muscles) powder (or tablet form) and it worked.
Have heard you can make them if you get safety glasses with the removable lenses so you can pop them in to grip the mesh and cut out those bits. However these were given to me by somebody who worked in Scottish forestry. Sadly they don't make them any more, or at least i cant find them. Atb
@@RS.Outdoors thanks for the answer.....think i might make one:-) Also thanks for your fantastic Cape Wrath trail videos....that trail has a very special meaning for me because i met my wife while being on trail.
Renegade Scot awesome buddy. Hopefully you should get it next time! I had to get of the Yorkshire wolds way the other week was with wilderness ways on his fails attempt of it and we both failed I had issues with my left leg and foot. It’s ongoing issue and trying to get answers at the min
Good video Ray. The beech looked lovely and the land scape barren. I have one of them blue rollers but I thought it was a sex toy, must have got it wrong again. No wonder I was in agony 🤣. Looking forward too the next part. How do you rate the sea to summit sleeping bag. 👍
All cyclists be advised. 20 yrs ago, myself and 2 others traveled the A9, went west, stripped the gear off our bikes, and prepared ourselves for a nice run to Cape Wrath. With our cameras. We were denied by a clown called morrison (the small ferry ),his excuse was he had no room for bikes. Except, that day he had to take a sh*t (his words ),and he had no time for people on bikes. We were willing to pay/wait while he performed the aforementioned ablutions and allow us to complete an otherwise excellent trip around our own country, but he got very loud, and chased us away. We completed our journey down the west coast and home. Yo, morrison manny, if you are still alive. I hope your next sh*t is a hedgehog.
I'm looking at doing this next year so this will be a very handy series 👍🏻
Thanks and hope it helps. Atb
Very inspiring. That beach 😍
Thanks Mike, Atb.
Cracking video! By the way RS used to be the trademark of Radio Shack which started business supplying items for amateur, or ham radio users.
Liking your videos. Thanks for posting.
Glad you like them! Atb
Hi great video. I'm hoping to start Cape Wrath mid June I did the west highland way and the great glen way a few weeks ago. Wackywonderings says hi 😊👌
Cheers mate. Hope to redo it later this year as well. Atb

Last time I was at a tank range was running around it down at Borden doing my REME course for the TA many years ago.
Look forward to your final verdict on this. It's all good 👍

Cheers, Ray. Climbing that barbwire fence twice to get the shot means you already won the internet. 👍🙂
Thanks :)
Smashin'. Great to be out again.
Wow! You’ve really set the bar high with this video. Quality! Atb. Hardy
It's ok mate and only goes downhill from here ;) Atb

The other flavours are excellent. The Chicken korma is immense. Atb
Just watched this first one Ray. Looks really tough.

Did hear about folks changing to natural oil rather than the factory produced stuff. Carbs and sugar are my downfall. Atb
Nice one. Regarding sore calves, we find we get sore calves when carrying a fair amount of weight, but not with a smaller pack.
nice video, what tent is that you're using?
It is a MLD (Mountain Laurel Design) Duomid in DCF material. The inner is from Aliexpress in China. Have videos about them both on my channel.

You want to try the Chicken Tarka. It's a little 'otter..
Love Scotland have saved £2,000 so far to move to Scotland and am still saving as I need ruffly £30,000 to move want to live in the Highlands.
Great stuff and wish you well with your plans.

Hi, yes it is the new Gossamer Gear and so far I am impressed with it and no real issues. Atb
I have the same chest pack (Ribz), had it on a few thru-hikes and found the sides to rub against the inner arms a bit nasty. Same experience?
Never had nay issue with it rubbing. Don't even feel that I am wearing it to be honest. Atb
This path didn’t seem distinctive, is the trail easy to follow. Good start to your trip.
media underground what’s your thought on doing it from cape wrath to fort William
media underground yes I would agree what a ghastly place to finish such an epic walk
As mentioned there is no marked trail as such. Lots of cross country and bog hoping. The Trail maps are a guide to the routes to take and you need to have good navigation skills in all conditions for some sections. Atb
Hey bud. What are the two front/side bags you have on? Look quite smart
Tey are called a Ribzpack from US. It is in my gear list video. Atb
Hi ray.where did you get your head net from as I am going to be a sector hike of the the cwt this year hopefully.

cool midge net! Did you make that yourself? Want one too :)

Nice video buddy!
Looking at doing it at a later date myself.
Was your pack 10kg then some more weight with the other front bag system you use?
It was 10 kg and 2kg of camera gear. Hope you get the chance to do it as it is an amazing experience. Atb
Renegade Scot awesome buddy.

The sleeping bag is excellent and often too hot with it and had it unzipped more like a quilt. Not cheap but worth every penny, Atb
I have been looking at the rab neutrino 800 as well. What's the limit comfort of the seatosummit
i suppose you cant stop for a camp stop
Normally you could but I only had a few days to try and achieve distance. Atb
