You've got to love a Barlow! It was the first pattern that I ever bought when I was a youth (I just found it in the basement, it had been missing for years).
Fantastic collection TK!! The single bladed Barlow and the Sodbuster are my 2 favorite slip joint patterns by far! Thanks for sharing your collection with us!
My EDC is an old Schrade -made Craftsman "Old Crafty" barlow with Imperial Prov. RI. marked blades. Sharp and slicey carbon steel blades can't be beat for a traditional pocket knife.
PS. As a granddaddy and Nana helping our wee lad (3 yo in May) twin grandsons start their collections, we really dig your content (been binging this afternoon), which reflects a true cutlery aficionado spirit, regardless of fads and ridiculously priced latest vogue steel or patter or gimmick! Rather, you are experienced, knowledgeable and confident enough to feature and compliment a Frost (per above!) when deserved! Our boys may have only half the vocabulary and concepts to comprehend your commentary, but Nana and Papa provide some translation into BUBS-lingo when required, they love your handling and flipping and pulling and rolling every knife!! THANK YOU!!

Nice presentation. I only became interested in this pattern in the last few years, and only have a few. I can see why they were so popular years ago. I haven’t found one I’m too excited about, but I will probably try a few more. I sometimes carry a Rough Rider Barlow when I’m working. It gets the job done and if I lose it in the hay field I won’t be crying myself to sleep.

Hi TK! Just picked up a couple more barlows.. found this awesome video! Really enjoying seeing your collection! I hope all is well with you my friend! Thanks for the videos!
Awesome collection! Thanks for sharing. Several of those are on my wish list. Like you, I'm torn on the Grand Daddy pattern, especially when it comes to EDC. The Rams Horn Bone is the only one I own (of any brand), though I'd like to get the High Plains or Black & Blue.
Love your videos and I love barlows! That said, I really only like single bladed barlows. I'm definitely a fan of the Culpepper. I'd like to get that one.
Thank TK a fantastic video, I love the Barlow, a great fit for me, easy to carry and has great blade shapes, I have six Barlows, 4 Rough Riders, the Frost Calibre, as you said a lovely knife and an Etsy find, a custom made with real stag handles, as usual you given me a few ideas for future buys👍 I think my next Barlow will be the Wasp Barlow by RR. Thanks again Take care Sam
I always loved the Barlow , Daddy carried an old Queen Barlow back in the ‘60s and bought me an old Colonial when I was 10 . I just picked up an old keen kutter and imperial Barlow with honey bone handles ,my favorite scales . Same color as your Queen .
I'm a little late to this party, but nice selection of Barlows TK! I froze the picture & counted, I think I have 19 of the 29 you showed. I've got the Queen on order from Chicago Knife Works (best price) and I had the very same problem you did on the white smooth bone RR, and I bought two of them. One was a R. Ryder & the other a R. Rider they both had weak pulls! I may get another one & just to see if it's gonna be "Strike Three and your OUT"! Thanks for being a fellow Barlow Nut!
Thanks for sharing you experiences. With the White Smooth Bone I may opt out of another if that's the case. Shame about that as I like the knife a lot otherwise. Thanks Tim.
Nice collection of Barlows. Thanks for sharing. That Grand Daddy Rams Horn would be really nice without the blade etch and shield. Just the horseshoe bolster is all it needs.
Thanks for the tour. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I like the look of the Queen, but I've got to get that Queen Wharncliffe. I've been looking for a single blade serpentine wharncliffe for ages, after acquiring the pattern as a silver and mop fruit knife. I knew there had to be one out there somewhere. Thanks again.
Love the Barlow. I've still got Barlows I got back in the late 60's as gifts from my dad and my uncles. Put them through hell with those carbon steel blades, but could they ever take an edge and hold it. I bought my last Colonial Barlow in 85 with scrimshaw panels at the base exchange in FT. CAMPBELL. I HAVE THE SCHRADE Barlow in a altoids tin with other 8tems for a small emergency fire starter kit in my Alice pack.
AHH YES, the Altoids tin, a very handy piece of kit. Thanks for sharing, Richard. The Barlow is a pattern I will always continue buying. I like them an awful lot. Have a great day.
The Barlow pattern is certainly an easy pocket carry jackknife. I have a few that I actually carry occasionally. They cut whenI need them to. Currently, carrying a Kershaw Culpepper (large, single-blade) Barlow Knife as a EDC. Thanks for sharing your Barlow collection with us. -Tennessee Smoky
Really awesome collection of Barlows! I only have two, one is I think made in Pakistan with wood covers, and the other is a Case Vault release Barlow with bonestag covers. Looking at all the ones you have I think I want to get some more. I've been looking at the Rough Ryder classic carbon yellow Barlow lately. I have a few knives from that series, I think I might need another.
Awesome collection! I see several I’d like to have. My faves are the Queen, cinnamon, worm groove, white bone, ram horn. I like the size of the Culpepper, but not enough for the price. Druther get the RRR017 barlow- D2 and micarta and the fat spear. I don’t get the granddaddy barlow, either - too dang big. We need a grandma barlow, 4 inches and a spear blade. I keep telling SMKW, and the sound of their answer is…crickets. Lol. Cool that the caliber is decent - they have a gunstock I’ve been looking at. There are some good Frosts! And some of the old ones are crazy cool designs. Anyway, thanks for the look at a chunk of your collection. Enjoyed it.
Yessir, thanks for watching. Patiently waiting for the RRR Barlow. Hurry up already you dang boat! A Granny Barlow would be cool. All the Grandaddy needs is a lockback, not all that different from a single bladed trapper. Imagine a cinnamon stag Grandaddy lockback with no shield. Take my money.
When I was a young lad all us farm boys carried a pocket knife. A lot of them were cheap carbon blade knives. They sharpened up real easy and held their edge. We had a lot of uses for them around the farm. I even used mine to sharpen pencils when I was ar school. I doubt they would let anyone carry a knife in school these days.
I have some French knives I use fo food preparation. One in particular I use only for slicing tomatoes. I think the RR Grandaddy would be useful in food prep rather than EDC. I really like the Barlow pattern, a favourite of mine to be sure.
I heard a certain Mr. Barlow would like to talk to you. Wow TK, that is a lot! And it blows my mind that you listed all of them :). Still have to get my first barlow, maybe the Classic Carbon. That Buffalo one looks good to me too.
It's a great knife pattern, you should definitely give one a try if you haven't already. Mr. B and I have a lot of common likes in traditionals. I quite fancy his great Buck Collection. Thanks DD.
I love a Barlow and have a fair few myself. Mostly British (40+)as I’m in the U.K., and most of them Taylor’s Eye Witness (30 ish), a small number of USA made, a couple of Bökers, one JE Made, and most of the rest are Rough Rider/ Marbles. The Grandaddy makes a great desk knife. A perfect letter opener! A Barlow is the one pattern where the R on the bolster is OK. In my opinion, Barlows should have a stamp on the bolster and no shield!
Thanks SS. The TEW are great knives, I wish I had more of them. Yes, you are right about the Grandaddy being a desk knife. Interesting take on the R. I do like like my Barlowe to be pretty barren.
I've a tendency to go for just under the regulation 3 inches if I'm hiking locally so only the A Wright Barlow tends to get used much at present. Yes, the Grand Daddy Barlow's, the blades are up to smaller fixed blade size like Mora's and Hultafors so unless you wanted to definitely store your knife out of sight out of mind (probably quickly) it's not the ideal size. If I was camping with pets and kids it might be convenient. I have a one handed opener and closer for wood working when pets are around. I like the look of those Bear and Sons, there's an old fashionedness to them I like the look of in a Barlow.
Granddaddys would need a lock on them before I'd think to use them much. Very beautiful lines on them though so I'm happy to buy them for show. Thanks Richard.
Man I love these classic slip joint barlows. I remember having the second one you showed, the imperial from Ireland, with the carbon steel blades. Such a great little pocket knife, perfect for my 5th pocket. Wish I still had it. Can’t get any from Amazon cuz they don’t ship knives in NYS. So I’m considering getting a new Barlow from SMKW, as they seem to have a decent selection of slip joint rough ryders and case. Prices seem good as well. New subscriber here, loving the content, keep up the great videos, man!
Welcome aboard, Joel. glad you are enjoying the content. The older Imperials with carbon blades are plentiful in used condition on eBay. That might be looking into if you enjoy them.
Yeah them Barlow's are some difficult knives to open if the nail nick is barely visible. I have an old Colonial knife Co. Barlow that is Carbon Steel. A recent acquisition to my collection is a Schrade Old Timer Barlow. I'll take a good or bad Barlow any day for pocket carry.
Hi TK, I enjoy your contribution! So much so that I actually signed in to share this; you know that 'T' under the Rough Ryder 'R'? Think of it as a sword/knife hilt, the blade point emerges from the top of the 'R'! How often have you wondered what that damn 'T' was all about? Now you know! ;) Peace and Love
Nice collection, I wish Rough Ryder would make more single blade Barlows. It’s my favorite pattern after the Texas jack but I don’t like 2 blade Barlow knives.
Nice....Mr Barlow has a recent video with a RR Barlow with the clip point blade in front I think it was yellow and black micarta RR is getting wise....It’s on my list...I just received a RR cinnamon stag bone Barlow a few days ago it’s been in my pocket ever since....It does have a light pull I think about a four.
A 5, 6 pull is ideal I think.. An 8 is way too tough.. had several springs of particular RR broke by opening them with an 8 pull. I use them everyday though.. but I only keep ‘em when the pull is not to hard. You have a nice collection. I own 16 Barlow knives as well. And I own 53 RR knives. 😅😭
Excellent presentation and collection. I only have the sawcut Queen. The pattern was made for my hand 🤣. I have no problem opening the tucked in nail nick it is just a question of adapting your technique.
Enjoyed your collection; but if it were me, I'd trade them all in for barlows from Case, Boker and GEC. I'd rather have 3 top quality barlows than 30 truck stop varieties. I like Rough Ryder knives for carrying, if I lose or break one it doesn't hurt my feelings too much. However, I did enjoy seeing the variation; you've got a nice collection!
The barlow is my favorite traditional pattern. I really wish more knife companies would try their take on these old fashioned blades. Could you imagine one made by Spyderco?
Brother, let your nails grow as long or short, and we folks that who have sufficient time to worry about ourselves and not others, won’t judge it! Lol You briefly mentioned attitude toward those petty peeps is exactly why I’ve revisited my high school length faux hawk, and a beard well below my collar!
Not seen the that single blade with purple covers for sale over this side the pond, would have been tempted, I don't have a single Barlow it's a pattern that doesn't really appeal to me.
It appears that the blades on these have "half stops." Is that correct? (I saw it pointed out on a model or two) I was taught a game called "jack knife" by my grandfather back in the 70s/80s, that involves a knife - roughly 4" I'm guessing - that has the long and short blades, but you can't use knives where those blades just smoothly open/close. The long one (at least) has to be able to half lock at 90 degrees or you can't plant it in the board for the flip, and it will move during the act of flipping it as it unsticks itself from the board, which throws off the scoring.
@@ThriftyKaniffy No one else seems to be either. But I'm sure some may have played it under a different name. You basically sit in facing chairs, with a plank laid lengthwise from one to the other. It's usually about 10-12" wide and soft enough that you can dig a point in without much pressure. You unfold the blades so that the small blade is fully out and the longer blade is at 90 degrees. You plop the point of the large blade down into the plank so that it's sticking just enough to not move but not so much that it effects the flip, with your finger supporting the bottom end of the knife body. At this point, the body creates about a 45-degree angle to the board. (if you go through the steps it's not nearly this complicated, btw). You then lift your finger to flip the knife. If it sticks with the large blade sticking and the base of the body touching the wood, it's 5 points, without the body touching, it's 10. With the big and small blades dug in, it's 15. Small blade only, 20, and if it lands on the spine of the knife with neither blade sticking, it's 25. Basically, it's five more points for every stage it could stick, from easiest to most difficult. When we were about 10, this could keep us busy for hours. I think we usually played to about 500. I've tried to bring it back, but have had a hell of a time finding a roughly 4" body and blades with half stops, which I'm sure you can see is pretty important with this game. Without them, the long blade opens up more when you flip it, or when it sticks etc. Take care.
Honestly, a nail nick that hides when the blade is closed really ticks me off. I have patience with many imperfections, especially in budget knives. But I don't want simple use to be a hassle. Nice collection though, and nice vid. Well done!!
As a collector of vintage Barlow's I just really don't dig the modern trend of putting a shield on the handle :( Traditional Barlow's never had a shield, just marks on the bolster.
You've got to love a Barlow! It was the first pattern that I ever bought when I was a youth (I just found it in the basement, it had been missing for years).

Nice collection, I wish Rough Ryder would make more single blade Barlows. It’s my favorite pattern after the Texas jack but I don’t like 2 blade Barlow knives.
I'm confident RR will continue on with the single blade Barlow releases. Thanks, Derek.
That seems to be the norm on the Cinnamon Stag bone. Yep, the Wasp and Tuff Stag RRs switched the blades around. Thanks Prestriedge.
@@ThriftyKaniffy Yes Sir
A 5, 6 pull is ideal I think..
An 8 is way too tough.. had several springs of particular RR broke by opening them with an 8 pull.
I use them everyday though.. but I only keep ‘em when the pull is not to hard.
You have a nice collection. I own 16 Barlow knives as well. And I own 53 RR knives. 😅😭
That's a nice collection of RR. Thanks for having a look at the Barlows.
Excellent presentation and collection. I only have the sawcut Queen. The pattern was made for my hand 🤣. I have no problem opening the tucked in nail nick it is just a question of adapting your technique.
Awesome! Thank you Matthew. The Queen is a favorite.
Thank you👍👍🤠🤠
Thanks KJ. Glad you liked it.

Ok, good to know. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel.
I think the old timer was my favorite
Thanks for having a look. I really appreciate the Barlow pattern one of my favorites for certain.
The barlow is my favorite traditional pattern. I really wish more knife companies would try their take on these old fashioned blades. Could you imagine one made by Spyderco?
I imagine a lot of modern makers doing traditionals in the right way would have success.
Good video T K your the boy from Craig West Coast to Scotland 🏴
Thanks Craig. Good seeing you again.
Hot damn! Great video!
Glad you like Martialist. Welcome to the channel,
That shield on the yellow Granddaddy Barlow is an acorn...right? That’s what us old timers call it.
Enjoyed seeing your Barlow collection.
Thanks TK
I've heard it called both acorn shield and officer shield. There's many a word for the same thing in the knife world. Thanks Check.
True, makes it kinda fun.
Thats a little beauty 😍
Mighty nice to say mate. Thanks for having a look. Be well.
Gracias, Mario. Buenos dias, amigo.
Life's too short. So why should my nails always be.
@@ThriftyKaniffy Hahahaha! Cleverly put!

Bienvenidos KOKE.
Not seen the that single blade with purple covers for sale over this side the pond, would have been tempted, I don't have a single Barlow it's a pattern that doesn't really appeal to me.
Fairly new, I'm sure it'll show up soon. Thanks Lewis.
That jackhammer I used to get for 1.99 back in the 70s they would last about a year.
Yes Jackmaster knives. The were just budget beaters.
I readsomewhere the reason a barlows bolster is longer it lends more support to the blade.
This is true. A very durable pattern.
It appears that the blades on these have "half stops." Is that correct? (I saw it pointed out on a model or two)
I was taught a game called "jack knife" by my grandfather back in the 70s/80s, that involves a knife - roughly 4" I'm guessing - that has the long and short blades, but you can't use knives where those blades just smoothly open/close. The long one (at least) has to be able to half lock at 90 degrees or you can't plant it in the board for the flip, and it will move during the act of flipping it as it unsticks itself from the board, which throws off the scoring.
Not familiar with the game. Some have half stops, some don't. Thanks for sharing, AJ.
Well done!!
That's fair enough, RA. If I used them all for EDC I'd gravitate toward the ones that were easy to open too. Thanks for the feedback.
Didn't Schrade buy Imperial around 1985?
1983 I believe it was, they had long been associated before that though.
Hey TK! I prefer a lighter pull - any interest in selling that white smooth bone Rough Ryder?
Contact me at thritykaniffy@gmail.com and we will discuss. Thanks Benjamin.
Nice 👍🙂❤
Thanks for the visit, Gary.
👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching West. Take care buddy.
Who sings your favorite version of the Barlow Knife song?
I didn't think there were any words to the song, just an instrumental. Can't say I have a favorite. Thanks Duy.
As a collector of vintage Barlow's I just really don't dig the modern trend of putting a shield on the handle :( Traditional Barlow's never had a shield, just marks on the bolster.
I can understand that. I do like a nice clean design as well.
😂😂😂 I also keep a longer thumb nail. Left side in my case.
Thanks good to know I'm not the only one.
Jack master
That's right.
Nice collection, plenty of history with Barlows and just a classy knife. George Washington carried one.
George musta been a smart dude. One of my favorite patterns.
George Washington was very smart and a great warrior.
You get older you might like a Later Pull someday?
Well I'm no spring chicken, but I still prefer a firm lockup. Thanks Matthew.
Lol workaday fingers need nails. Lildog agrees!
Despute, the digs, they are useful, lorenray. Thanks.
I figured that why your finger nail was grown out.
Yes, I've had some complaints about it. Oh well.
