I'm glad Umbridge was on the lists instead of Snape, she was just evil, Snape did what he did to protect Harry because he was deeply in love with his mother. I would have put the Coach from Varsity Blues on this list or an honorable mention.
Even though I'm a huge Back to the Future fan, I'm gonna be honest: Strickland's a terrible person, but I think Trunchbull and Umbridge are worse. At least he never physically harmed his students, or threatened to. Sure, he DID threaten to shoot Marty in alternate 1985, but that was because he'd been driven into being a paranoid survivalist under Biff's rule.
Plus, if you look at the moral message of then R.I.P Dumbledore, getting tortured is far worse than death. I mean Umbridge was about to use a torture curse on Harry! One of the three unforgivable curses! DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU READ THE 5TH BOOK! SPOILER! Usplay, Umbridgeway asway ethay oneway atthay entsay ethay Ementorsday onway Arryhay Otterpay otay oday ethay "isskay"!
Elle Tristan Snape is fucking mean!!! Even in the movies where they only use 40% of the books he's so mean! He's mean to Harry and Ron and Hermione. He FUCKING TERRIFIED Neville!
He's not mean. He's strict. He is a spy. But mean? No, that comes from the emotions he felt towards loosing the woman he loved to another guy AND then her loosing her life. From there, we see he protects Harry and other students. He tried to protect Harry against Sirius and Luppin when he thought they would hurt him/ Ron/ Hermione. Would such a mean teacher do that? No, he would probably be "Oh, screw them. I'll say I got there late. Three students less for me to worry about." I'm sorry, but Snape doesn't equal mean. He equals- if anything- tortured. Or strict, as mentioned prior.
Jean Luc Picard He's childish as fuck. He can't get over how James treated him and bullied him and treats Harry and all the other Gryffindors the exact same way. Fuck Snape. I'm a big Potterhead and read the books and watched the movies a million times so I know Snape inside out. Even after his whole back stroy I can't stand him. He's selfish.
motherfuckers... Well I should have expected it since the film is new and not many will have seen it until oscar buzz reaches the masses in a few months but seriously he is the embodiment of a mean teacher. He is harsher than any teacher on this list without descending into being needlessly or unrealistically cruel
i think because its a list of being mean. too me he was wasnt being mean. i dont know what the movie is about but if its just military taking over, then he's just reinforcing the program, nothing personal as we see with the other ones on this list.
Tony Pantoja In battle royale the Japanese government takes a class of 9th graders and forces them to kill each other (Much like the hunger games). Kitano was full out mean. He kills two students, (Almost three) Calls them names, has relations with one of the students, enjoys watching children kill each other, and takes people who have already one (And now suffer from PTSD flashbacks) and throw them back into the game.
TasteThe RainbowXZ okay now i see why others are pissed, thanks for giving me the extra info. but its funny, i didnt expect that scene where he throws a knife to a students head.
Livin in Denmark i know some hard ass teachers from movies. At the top of my head comes to mind a teacher in a film called "Drømmen" where he litteraly tore a student so hard in the ear it almost fell of. Then a teacher called Lektor Blomme from a movie called "det forsømte forår" he was so mean my teacher called him satanic. I know thatt the watchmojo office hasn't seen all danish movies but i just wanted to bring them up. Have a great days people who read this :)
The staff on WatchMojo hasn't seen J.K. Simmons' role as Fletcher in Whiplash. I hope they revisit this category again because he was awesome in that role.
ashbygail same here. They did have some other really good picks as well. Made me want to watch Matilda again, it's been forever since I've seen it. My 2nd grade teacher made me read almost every book written by that particular author. Thought the majority of the movies made for them were pretty good also. James and the Giant Peach is a gem never talked bout much.
I guess most of the WatchMojo audience must be too young to remember the 1980s; otherwise, 'Dick' Vernon and Mr. Hand wouldn't just be honorable mentions. Since I was in school for the entire decade of the 1980s, I can tell you from firsthand experience that teachers just like that really did exist...
I can't believe this. Nobody on the Mojo staff considered Brother Constance from "Heaven Help Us," Principal Elliot T. Jindrake, from "Max Keeble's Big Move," James J. McHabe in "Up the Down Staircase," or every single teacher in "If..." Not that there aren't a few good choices here, but those people should've been given serious examination.
Hmm.. For some reason, a psychopathic murderer teacher (Battle Royale) seems meaner than a teacher who has an issue with slackers (BttF). That's just me, though. I guess some people would rather take a knife to the head than deal with a teacher hounding you down about homework or skipping class.

Harry Potter fan here and there was a reason why I hated umbridge cause the actor played it perfect the character I love to hate and hate to love so I liked umbridge and hated her alot
Saw the dean from Ferris Buller's Day Off, and Strickland from Back to the Future series coming a mile away. I don't know most of these, but those two are the meanest teachers in movie I know to date.
If there's a redux of this, the following should be added,,, Elliot T. Jindrake(Max Keeble's Big Move) Ken Dwight(Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life) Benjamin "Benny" Krupp(Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie)
And while it saddens me that the UK hasn't been able to experience it yet, Watchmojo is an American based show that gives the "top ten" in something. So excluding a movie (that even by the trailers) should clearly be on this list....sort of doesn't make sense.
They generally don't include movies that are still in theaters and aren't yet out on DVD. Whiplash was an amazing movie, though. J.K. Simmons I believe has an excellent shot of winning an Oscar.
This list should be updated with Principal Elliot T. Jindrake/Max Keeble's Big Move and Principal Dwight in the film adaptation of Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life.
J.K. Simmons Golden Globe winning (and deservedly won) performance as Terence Fletcher in Whiplash. That character made me uneasy in the thrilling and exciting movie.
As well as Principal Wartz from Hey Arnold!, Mrs. Hayfer from Drake & Josh, Mr. Sweeney from Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, and Principal Shepherd from Degrassi: The Next Generation.
Dear WatchMojo, don´t underestimate your fans, or HP fans for that matter. Umbridge is the most hated character in the books(and the films). "She" is more hated than Voldemort, and definitely more hated than Snape, who in fact was trying to help Harry all along. And also thank you for all your videos, I´m a huge fan.
The Japanese film confessions! What the teacher did in that movie is just downright brutal and sadistic in my opinion, wins out in the most mean/evil teacher she does, damn im gonna go watch that film again:D
I know he's not technically a teacher but the drill sergeant from 'full metal jacket' matches all the entry requirements and should be no.1. He's the definition of mean, in fact it's his job to be mean.
for them to pick Umbridge over Snape makes sense cause Snape turned out to be a good guy plus he wasn't mean, he just didn't get attached. Umbridge was just downright evil
Trunchball was a lot meaner than the rest of the 10. She reminds me of my old elementary school principals as well as some of those who worked at a community center right across the school (School's Out Kids' Option, or SOKO), my grade six teachers and staff, as well as some of my summer camp leaders. It didn't matter much to them if I had a mental disorder or what happened was either an accident or not; or if someone made me do it, if someone made a joke or an insult, or if I lost control of my temper or not - I cried and shouted at times that they sometimes spoke to me about my behavior. I mean, my mother said nothing, assuming I was the source of every bit of problem that occurred (though she claims she did what she could to help). I should've gotten more counseling - and it could've been more of a social or mental health issue rather than a disciplinary issue. She also reminds me of the Manhattan DA North and the detectives who interrogated five young boys, black and brown, known as the Central Park Five, by using aggressive tactics to deprive them of any rights of food, sleep, drink etc., for hours - and torture them to make them give statements that'd later be proven false. And they would not only wait for another decade or so for that to happen - but also fight for 25 years to settle the matter. She is really the kind of person who scars the memory of a child's life - for the things she does.
As a kid I perceived Strickland incorrectly as a mean individual. As an adult I see him now as a kind individual. Same goes for The Substitute, and my add to the list To Sir, With Love.
Outside of the Death Eaters, Dolores Umbridge is the most despicable character in the Harry Potter franchise. Imelda Staunton played her to perfection!! She made Umbridge exactly as I imagined her in the books in terms of her looks and voice.
Umbrige makes Snape look like a boyscout.and that's scary. And to prove that there's a post on Facebook that I saw that read "admit it you wanted her dead more then Voldamort".
J.K. Simmons as Terrence Fletcher from Whiplash. No contest.
I Guess you guys haven't seen Whiplash (2014)
I want a highlight reel of every frame J.K. Simmons is on screen.
They don't do films from 2014 because alot of people haven't seen them including Watchmojo staff, also it's community based ratings.
They def need to revisit this list again. J.K. Simmons needs to be on here.
sebastian galoria Whiplash was released a couple months AFTER this list was made. That's why it's not here.
How is a strict teach from back to the future worse then a teacher who throws a kid by her hair and locks kids in a chokey
IKR
Because Strickland is a realistic antagonist, Agatha is exaggerated. (not that it's a bad thing)
thrunchbull was a murderer, that realistic and worse the strickland
you just used the name of a Mathilda character and realistic in the same sentence.
dosent matter their both made up characters. both are fiction. both have equal grounds fake.
You Need more upvotes :D
I thought the same.. Biff is Way more mean And so on... But okay he is not a teacher :)
I had a teacher in 5th grade named Mr. Strickland XD
but he was strict.
Unfortinately he has the same last name as me. Shit
SPOILER!
Usplay, Umbridgeway asway ethay oneway atthay entsay ethay
Ementorsday onway Arryhay Otterpay otay oday ethay "isskay"!
Snape actually is the nice guy. He did all he did to protect Harry through the years for the love of Harry's mother.
No. Snape is not a fucking nice guy. If he was, he wouldn't be Neville's boggart. Think about that for a moment.
Snape is not a mean teacher he is scary. He protected Harry all through Hogwarts but he is scary as hell!!!
Elle Tristan Snape is fucking mean!!! Even in the movies where they only use 40% of the books he's so mean! He's mean to Harry and Ron and Hermione. He FUCKING TERRIFIED Neville!

J.K simmons character from the new movie Whiplash has to be on the list. His performance and character is terrifying and ruthless.
motherfuckers...
Well I should have expected it since the film is new and not many will have seen it until oscar buzz reaches the masses in a few months but seriously he is the embodiment of a mean teacher. He is harsher than any teacher on this list without descending into being needlessly or unrealistically cruel
Why the hell is Kitano not Number 1? he KILLED two students
Because as many people didn't vote for him.
i think because its a list of being mean. too me he was wasnt being mean. i dont know what the movie is about but if its just military taking over, then he's just reinforcing the program, nothing personal as we see with the other ones on this list.
Tony Pantoja In battle royale the Japanese government takes a class of 9th graders and forces them to kill each other (Much like the hunger games). Kitano was full out mean. Tony Pantoja Nobody did X3
I'm really surprised the guy from The Breakfast Club is only an honorable mention, and a guy who kills his students in only
Livin in Denmark i know some hard ass teachers from movies. At the top of my head comes to mind a teacher in a film called "Drømmen" where he litteraly tore a student so hard in the ear it almost fell of. Well thay had at least a swedish movie on this list! :D
CookieMonsterMC11 there is?
Jeppe A K Sørensen
It's in the honourable mentions :D
Oh didnt See it :)
The staff on WatchMojo hasn't seen J.K. Simmons' role as Fletcher in Whiplash. I hope they revisit this category again because he was awesome in that role.
Im stopping 10 seconds in and saying that if the teacher from Matilda isn't in this list, there is no justice in the world and the terrorists won.
Trunchbull was literally the first character I thought of when I saw this on my subscription feed!
ashbygail me toooooo :3
..... sweet!!!
ashbygail same here.
Everyone did, every one did... Tronchatoro you're the meanest... She's someone that you love to hate
How is a teacher that kills his students above a cartoonish principle.
5:47 is also known as sprinting in Skyrim with low stamina.
I laughed my ass off :|
Best Comment!
Hilarious.
Annie the Dark Child GENIUS
What about the teacher from Pink Floyd's "The Wall"? That was technically a movie released in theaters.
The Wall is one of Pink Floyd's biggest albums but it started off that way, although there was a film adaptation of it, it doesn't count.
Umbridge, good choice
I can't believe this. Nobody on the Mojo staff considered Brother Constance from "Heaven Help Us," Principal Elliot T. Jindrake, from "Max Keeble's Big Move," James J. McHabe in "Up the Down Staircase," or every single teacher in "If..." Not that there aren't a few good choices here, but those people should've been given serious examination.
Lol should've done Mr. Garvey from Key n Peele hahaha
J. K. Simmons in Whiplash feels pity for this guys...
Terence Fletcher from Whiplash should be on this list too. He was pretty fucking mean!!
7:06 But coach Willis isn't a teacher. He's an alien impersonating a teacher.
I watched matilda SOOOO many times when i was a kid. That, scooby doo, and jurassic park were my favs
onions: i will make u cry
my math teacher: i am 4 parallel universes ahead of you
Hmm.. For some reason, a psychopathic murderer teacher (Battle Royale) seems meaner than a teacher who has an issue with slackers (BttF). That's just me, though. I guess some people would rather take a knife to the head than deal with a teacher hounding you down about homework or skipping class.
Yeah but he isn't really a real teacher

kiato is the worst
Saw the dean from Ferris Buller's Day Off, and Strickland from Back to the Future series coming a mile away. I don't know most of these, but those two are the meanest teachers in movie I know to date.
We need a Top 10 Meanest TV Teachers! And Miss Constance Hardbroom on The Worst Witch should be on the list!
I love how the song "The Kids Aren't Alright" by The Offspring plays at 7:54.
I think mr. Vernon from The Breakfast Club should have been on the list, not an honorable mention.
More recently, J.K. Simmons character in the film "Whiplash".
If there's a redux of this, the following should be added,,,
Elliot T. Jindrake(Max Keeble's Big Move)
Ken Dwight(Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life)
Benjamin "Benny" Krupp(Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie)
John Kreese or Terry Silver from the Karate Kid franchise.
I immediately thought of the music teacher from Whiplash when I saw the title, but was surprised not to see him on the list.
I would've put Trunchbull first. Public humiliation and an iron maiden looking thing beats calling somebody a slacker lol
You guys hit the nail on the head with Professor Umbridge. That woman is EVIL.
helen mirren was in caligula... i just cant stop thinking about that every time i see her...
Clearly no one here has seen Whiplash...
Nicky Alexis It's been out for a month
And while it saddens me that the UK hasn't been able to experience it yet, Watchmojo is an American based show that gives the "top ten" in something. So excluding a movie (that even by the trailers) should clearly be on this list....sort of doesn't make sense.
They generally don't include movies that are still in theaters and aren't yet out on DVD. Whiplash was an amazing movie, though. J.K. Simmons I believe has an excellent shot of winning an Oscar.
@@alexmeyer5260 Update: He did. And he deserved it.
Where in the Hell is Joe Clarke from "Lean On Me?"
He absolutely deserves to be on this list!
The teachers listed were meant to be "bad guys". Joe Clark, however over-the-top his attitude and strategies were, was a GOOD GUY!!!
This list should be updated with Principal Elliot T. Jindrake/Max Keeble's Big Move and Principal Dwight in the film adaptation of Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life.
"Give your father my best" I gasped along with the students XD
Thought for sure Umbridge would be first, but hell, I can't argue with this list at all.
What's so bad about the guy from The Substitute? He's just doing his job.
snap is the good one
Umbridge yes! She should be on this list!
No one can beat Mr. Strickland for this top ten
J.K. Simmons Golden Globe winning (and deservedly won) performance as Terence Fletcher in Whiplash.
That character made me uneasy in the thrilling and exciting movie.
1:39 Thought that was Sam Winchester for a second. Lol.
Umbridge defiantly!
I am NOT a mean teacher! Everyone is just on DOPE!
-Mr. Hand
They remind me too much of my horrible teachers throughout my school years up to my college years today.
Nodody thinks that Snape is worse than Umbridge, Umbridge is even worse than Voldemort
This is the first time I've seen real life Kevin Spacey since Advanced Warfare...mind blown
Do a list for mean tv teachers. I hope to see Buffy's Principal Snyder on there.
As well as Principal Wartz from Hey Arnold!, Mrs. Hayfer from Drake & Josh, Mr. Sweeney from Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, and Principal Shepherd from Degrassi: The Next Generation.
Alex Meyer That would be a great list
Talk about six cruel hours of our lives.
number 9 reminds me of Irons from Call of Duty Advanced Warfare
9:42
*HEY*! WatchMojo, You took that out of context! I'd be pretty pissed if i knew someone trespassed on my property.
I'm surprised the guy from Whiplash didn't get a mention...
The band teacher from Whiplash should be number one
Snape is too fabulous to be mean
Dear WatchMojo, don´t underestimate your fans, or HP fans for that matter. Umbridge is the most hated character in the books(and the films). "She" is more hated than Voldemort, and definitely more hated than Snape, who in fact was trying to help Harry all along. And also thank you for all your videos, I´m a huge fan.
Alright but how is jk simmons's performance in whiplash not on here?
He's definitely tame compared to the entries on this list, but that one teacher in Teen Witch still deserves a mention.
My dad went to Catholic school. It wasn't that bad. Heck, his teacher was my Sunday School teacher, and she was practically a saint!
That Chokey is a modern-day Iron Maiden!
Do one with College Instructors and put President Garcia-Thompson from PCU and Professor Soloman from Urban Legends 2 on it!
I knew it! Of course The Trunchbull!
Now, wait a minute! I loved this list but there is a problem with it. Where is the karate teacher from the Karate Kid Trilogy? He was a blast!
8:47 Severus Snape WAS the nice guy.
Cool to see a Swedish film make it on the honorable mentions list.
5:51 I just crapped myself laughing XD
Umbridge is WAY more terrifying than strickland
The Japanese film confessions! What the teacher did in that movie is just downright brutal and sadistic in my opinion, wins out in the most mean/evil teacher she does, damn im gonna go watch that film again:D
The teacher in Serenity. Pokes the girl in the eye with a pencil.
Umbridge was just downright evil
i will still put matilda as number 1 lol.
Shuo Yang Ms. Trunchball is mean and a selfish woman.
Ms. Tingle was also mean,too.
As a kid I perceived Strickland incorrectly as a mean individual. As an adult I see him now as a kind individual. Same goes for The Substitute, and my add to the list To Sir, With Love.
I too also have mean Teachers in my school
Man the 70s 80s and 90s had some fucking mean teachers. School looks much tamer today.
If this list gets updated, Fletcher from Whiplash would crush it on here.
I knew Trenchbull was gonna be on the list!
Mickey Rosa=Bad Guy in Advanced Warfare
In the book, it was at this point she revealed that she sent the Dementors.
Matilda's first teacher is number one!
Outside of the Death Eaters, Dolores Umbridge is the most despicable character in the Harry Potter franchise. Imelda Staunton played her to perfection!! She made Umbridge exactly as I imagined her in the books in terms of her looks and voice.
The teacher Mr. Bishop from that 1974 blaxploitation movie Johnny Tough (aka Tough!) should be here.
Terrence Fletcher from "Whiplash"?
Looks like we have some Heel Teachers on our hands folks.
2 should have been the winner. The back to the future teacher wasn't even cruel...
The runt in Elected, Mathew Broderick.
Umbrige makes Snape look like a boyscout.and that's scary. And to prove that there's a post on Facebook that I saw that read "admit it you wanted her dead more then Voldamort".
You should do top 10 Japanese/Asian horror movies :)
Yuko Moriguchi from Confessions (2010)
Gerald Strickland reminds me of Benson from regular show.
