Wrangler and Gladiator diesel fuel filter change

- First fuel filter change on our 21 eco diesel Wrangler, the Gladiator is changed the same exact way and in the same location under the Jeep.
We have driven over two thousand miles since installing the fuel filter and uploading this video to make sure we are recommending a product that does work.

Back in February I traded in my old Rubi for a 2021 EcoDiesel. This is my first Diesel engine, so while I did all of the changes on my last Rubi (gasoline), I figured I would take advantage of the new rubi's 3 free oil changes the dealer gave me at the purchase. I had the first in July, the second is due now. The only problem I had before (in July), was that I waited 3 hours at the dealer for the first change (redefines express lane), and man do I hate to wait, I would rather eat my veggies then do that... So, I start probing the internet for the differences in the gasoline and diesel oil change, and honestly this was the first time I heard of a filter on the fuel line. Maybe they have them in gasoline engines, but I never did anything to it if they did.. All that to say, I am certain I would have gotten pinched at the dealer for this had I not come across this video, as they only replace every other oil change, just draining it on the first, 3rd, etc..... With Diesel prices in Kansas up $1.15 over gasoline, and with this DEF B.S., I am starting to regret this decision. Definitely better gas mileage and torque for sure, so there is that, I just don't know if it all weighs out for me in the end. No turning back now.. Sorry for the novel here, but last thing, Chapter 87, any idea why a filter is required for these engines on the fuel line? Again this may in fact be something on a gasoline engine, in which case I admit to being a derp, but if not, why filter on Diesel and not on Gasoline, or why filter on both? Is the fuel from the gas station not already filtered for water? Still learning here and always curious. Thanks for the video, I think you just saved me a couple hundred bucks.
Hey Matt, both the gas and diesel fuel systems have filters, gas is every 100k miles but most people never do it. Diesel is a thicker fluid and hold debris in it better, so you are more likely to get something inside you fuel system. I've worked on diesel equipment for most of my life so I knew what I was getting into, and most people learn a lot when they purchase their first diesel. I truly hope you enjoy, but I purchased the diesel hoping that it will last longer in the long run, about to hit 2 years owning ours and she is almost at 46k miles. Diesel motors are more expensive to maintain, and it's true fuel cost way more now that it did when they first came out, and back whe I was a kid diesel was cheaper that gas. But my car get 1 mpg on the 1/4 mile and 4 mpg cruising. The new norm is paying a lot at the pump. If you have anymore questions contact me and I'll happily try to help you out. How many miles did you drive before changing the fuel filter? Just curious thanks
I do it every 20k miles, I haven't had any issues with water or debris in the housing. Most of our fuel comes from sams clubs around the country and haven't had any issues with it from them.
The owner manual says at 10k miles to "drain water from fuel filter assembly" -- would you just remove the filter, let is drain a little than reinstall?
So we have a light on the dash if there is water in there. I personally have never drained the filter housing till I change the filter. But if the water light did come on than yes definitely drain it.
But to fully answer your question, no do no remove the filter housing to drain the water, there is a little plastic drain cock that you can twist and it will allow the fluid inside to drain. Catch it in a bottle so you can see if there are 2 different colors to the fluid that you drain.
How much was that filter ? I was considering buying OEM FILTER
I bought 3 at a time and the link of the filter is in the description of the video. I don't remove how much I paid at the time buy 3 now are just over $100.
That part number shows it for. 6.7L cummins fuel/water serperator, I even typed it into a jeep parts dealership online, and it said it won't fit???
Ram, dodge and Jeep want to have less parts in their parts department so the same filter is used of the HD trucks as well as the 3.0 wrangler and gladiator. I clicked on the link to double check and make sure it's the correct link still and it is.

@Overlanding21 Yes, where is the def heater at, and why should one go out at 13900 miles on a 2022 gladiator? And how often should you change your fuel filter on this diesel beast???
@David Frishcosy there are 2 def heaters on the def system, one in the tank, and the other in on the def line, they turn on only when air temp is below freezing, if you are getting code p20c6 it could mean that the def you put in was contaminated or the def pump is going bad on it. Not sure the temperature at your location but if the weather is warming up I would take it to the dealership to let them look at it so it is documented so if it doesn't throw it again till next winter you are covered. If it's still going to be cold for awhile you can clear the code and see if it comes back as you can get it if the def fluid froze and the pump gave a fault for no flow of fluid.
Can you use the drain plug to drain the diesel before you take the filter cap off??

Looks like they are the same filters.
They are the same filter, very common for manufacturers doing this to reduce part inventory at dealerships.
Same filters.
Honda is going this route also. All their cars I've owned (Pilot, Odyssey, Cr-v, etc) used the same filter.
@@silverstake88 reduces inventory of different filters. Not hard to make 1 filter fit other engines.
