I was there ! The whole thing lasted well into the night with The Thad Jones / Mel Lewis closing the night . But initially Harry James’ band wasn’t listed or advertised. I said to my companions that how could the Newport Festival present a cavalcade of big bands without Harry James ? Well the band was working close by and voila ! There they were ! And as this recording attests to , they killed ! I’ll never forget that day . I was in heaven . All the bands were there !
The greatest trumpet star that ever lived most famous anyway He was a star in the era where he was in movies was a teen idle recording artist there’s nobody even close
Three bottles of Vodka a day and he could still play like this !!! Such a monster!! I worked for his tour manager once and asked what Harry was like. The man said '' at night... all he wanted was a bottle of Vodka and a Woman. well....i ask you, in somewhere like Wolverhampton, where could you get a bottle of vodka.... at 2 o'clock in the morning???? !!!! '' What a great player.
Chuck, thank you very much for uploading this rare concert! Great story about Buddy Rich and Sonny Payne’s snare drum. And from what I’ve read about Buddy, I believe every word of it!
This is incredible! Oh my! I read the story of Buddy Rich sabotaging Sonny Payne's snare drum in your fabulous book "Harry James: Trumpet Icon" - and here is the actual performance of that event!! This is quite a historic show. I can't believe I have the good fortune to hear it! Thank you Mr. Par-Due!!
@@thomaskirkpatrick1134 My son, Mark, a first call trumpeter in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, studied with Clay Jenkins when Mark was on a scholarship and lead trumpet in the Eastman School Of Music Jazz Ensemble in Rochester New Yoirk under the direction of the great Fred Sturm. Mark later was selected for the Mancini Institutes Jazz Ensemble in L.A. and from 2012 to 2014 he was on the road touring with Doc Severinsen's Tonight Show big band. He always spoke very highly of Clay.
Hi Chuck -- Is there any possibility to get this record? There was another performance at Newport, but it's only available as download: Harry James & Orchestra - Concert - Newport Jazz Festival, New York, NY Jul 2, 1974: Wolfgang's Vault (No #130) [DL]
