Excellent review of three OUTSTANDING 9x19 semiautomatics. Canik certainly designs and manufactures high quality, reliable, accurate and affordable autoloaders.
I understand HR’s closing comment . . . and fundamentally I agree with it. When I retuned from an arduous 18 months overseas assignment in 1971, I rewarded myself with a terrific, five-inch barrel, S&W M27. It was - and it remains - a splendid N Frame .357 magnum revolver. I rented a home in Northeast Philadelphia, proximate to my new duty station, in a neighborhood where I clearly was “the kid” and where many of the male residents were WW II vets and firefighters or cops, We got along very well and eventually I was invited to use the Philadelphia Police range, when accompanied by one or more of my neighbors. Routinely, I shot “okay,” but one of my friends was a superb marksman. His weapon of choice was a K Frame, M10, that - I’d guess - had been manufactured during in the early-1930’s (perhaps even the 1920’s). It has a “tench” rear sight and a very stout front sight, it was anything but accessorized and it was a basic as one could imagine. However, I don’t believe he ever purchased a beer - after shooting, we’d adjourn to a small “mom and pop” NE Philly taproom for refreshments . . . winners did not pay.
Well, my point essentially is “it’s the Indian, not the bow and arrow” that determines accuracy.
And this returns me to the Canik-TTI. I suspect that modern, formal handgun competitions are a lot “glitzier” than guys in the early-1970’s, shooting for a couple of beers, and wearing dungarees and sweatshirts. The firearms are not only excellent, but additionally they are showpieces, decked out with all sorts of “beneficial” accessories . . . and they often sport ostentatious colors, slide designs, and grips. Now, it is entirely possible that these “additions” actually improve accuracy and speed, but only very marginally. For me alone, this Canik-TTI Combat is embarrassingly “showoffish.” This certainly does NOT mean it is other than an excellent autoloader, but I’d be happier with standard firearm’s black, with fewer highly visible slide cuts, and so forth. Unquestionably, this is only a single Fudd’s opinion.
So, a this is doubtless a stellar firearm, but I’d wager that Ken Hackathorn could greatly out-perform most of us - equipped with this Canik - with a pre-World War II BHP . . . it’s the “Indian, not the bow and arrow.”

Thank you for a really cool story and a really great point!
I've only been shooting for about a year now, but whenever I've seemingly hit a wall in my performance, it has always turned out to be me that is the problem and not my gun. No amount of fancy doodads will make up for skills.
Except red dots. Those things actually cheat.

Canik Combat TTI owner here who loves the TTI.
Your video is spot on so much that I subscribed.
The TTI does have some muzzle flip but the compensator will reveal its value if you’re shooting fast.
I’ve owned the Mete SFX and Mete SFX pro. I’ve shot the Rival and the rival has the best trigger of them all.
What made me go with the TTI honestly is these :
Co-Witness between the optic and irons which is super important to me.
Super John Wick fan and always wanted an Taran pistol so yes I paid for the logo and the beautiful design ….and the coin 🤣
If you already have a rival and don’t care about co witness , I see no reason for you to feel pressured to grab a TTI as the rival is more than enough.
You can’t go wrong with either gun tho.

I have not shot the TTI but I’ve handled it a lot. It’s cool and probably the only way most people will ever own any firearm with Tarrin Butlers name on it. It’s still a Canik which is a Walther P99 essentially in new clothes. Nothing wrong with that at all. It’s a solid design to copy. For the $ I’d purchase a Walther PDP pro and spend the extra $200 on an optic or more ammunition to practice with.

“Maybe it’s just me…” Your candor helps all of us, because we need to keep in mind that we are all flawed, especially with shooting handguns. Some days are great, others not so much-why? It always makes me wonder. The interface between man and pistol is extremely nuanced. Sometimes we get frustrated because our standards are unrealistic perhaps.
    Anyway, thanks for your honesty!

Good comparison between the Canik pistols. I bought a Mete SFt and was rather disappointed in it - the trigger that everyone seems to find so impressive was creepy and soft compared to the Tisas PX-9 that I acquired at roughly the same time. I kept the Tisas and sent the Canik to Trade-in City.
I find it refreshing that you and I seem to agree on the (possible) over-application of "enhancements" that seem to be cropping up on so many handguns these days. I do not shoot anywhere close to as well as you. Jerry Miculek's competition guns would be way past my ability to utilize the special tuning and enhancements which are second nature to him. More power to those who can and do enjoy the benefits of all the add-ons but make mine a plain cheeseburger, please.
If I ever try Canik again that Rival Darkside looks awfully impressive. I'll let others be Tactical 😀

    Hello HR,
My comment isn’t about Canik but I had to tell you I just picked up my first 1911. A Tisas tank commander in nickel. I went with a Tisas in part because of your reviews. I will tell you where I got it or what I paid for it other than it’s supposed to be a Blem and the price was extremely reasonable. When it got to my FFL they examined the gun and both commented to me that in no way did they think this gun was a Blem. I’ve carefully looked it over and I can’t find a machining mark on this pistol. I can’t tell you how pleased I am with my purchase. As yet I haven’t gotten a chance to fire it partly because I’m dealing with a pulled muscle in my right arm. I can’t wait for my first trip to the range with it. Anyway just wanted to drop you a comment and let you know that I purchased this in a large part because of your reviews of Tisas in general. Take care and keep up the good work!

Yet another excellent video, and not just another head to head comparison. I really like your honest take on the pistols you review. It tells me more about the pistol than just shooting it. I've seen folks spring for the "enhanced" models when their skillset is not up to the added features and they would be better off to stick with a more basic model and work up their experience with it before "upgrading." Those with "better basics" and experience generally do better when it comes to fancier pistols, but even then if your performance does not elevate on the target it's not really worth it. Good call on your part sir!

Out of the 15 pistols I own the rival is the most accurate and I’m extremely happy with it. Yessir, you're terrible for comparing iron sights to dots! So much so you've convinced me to try one of my red dots again. You also demonstrated a point I often make to people I teach: get familiar with a gun before deciding how it is for you. That could mean 50 rounds or 500. You have a lot more thru the Darkside & it shows. And pointing out that bells & whistles don't enhance performance until you put in the work to take advantage of them? Terrible! Too many people don't like hearing the truth. But the little things I learn from you that may seem insignificant to others can make a difference to me & people I occasionally help. So thanks.

The G17 Combat Master is nothing better over a stock G17, just with a higher price tag. In my opinion TTI can be hit or miss. They do have a "coolness" factor thanks to John Wick.

If you bought a Rival S trigger shoe from Century and installed it in the mete SFT it feels exactly like the that and the rival triggers. I did it to mine and use it for a range/fun pistol

I’m sure that’s true. I prefer the stock Mete trigger for my purposes.

Honest and spot-on conclusory observations about the value to most shooters for the TTI Combat. Most shooters would be better with training pursuits, rather than gun upgrades, if they want to up their game. Interestingly enough, my wife and I got to try the TTI this week, and while it certainly is an excellent gun, and very accurate, was it better than out Dark Side? Not really. While we enjoyed the TTI, the Dark Side is so good that the TTI fell off our list of guns we'd likely purchase as a result. Yet another quality gun review, Mr. Funk.

Good morning HR. I've never used fiber optic sights. Do you think they are more for quicker acquisition than precision? I like tritium night sights on defensive guns, but all of my bullseye target guns had well defined black serrated target sights.
In shooting like most other things, good equipment helps. But it's the operator that determines the results.

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  4 місяці тому

I think the fiber optics, in general, are faster to pick up because they glow. I don't, however, think they are as precise as a plain black, square, front sight.

you need very hot ammo for a compensator to do anything on a 9mm

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  4 місяці тому

Which is ironic since so many shooters want the lightest ammo they can find to reduce muzzle rise/increase the speed of follow-up shots. I think, for such shooters, the compensator on this pistol is more cosmetic than functional.

I have the Rival Darkside. I just don't see anything about the TTI that makes it much of a upgrade over my Darkside. There are plenty of mods you can do to fhe Rival to make it a better, faster pistol and a better pistol than the TTI. I'd rather spend the money doing that than putting the money toward the TTI. Plus I hate the TTI color scheme. Just not my cup of tea. Canik should have used the Black and Copper/Bronze Taron uses on his Combat Master Glocks. It would look a-lot better. All in all I'll stick with the Rival and maybe buy a new 2011 !
