So happy to hear that this not only held up, but even improved upon re-read! I really should get to this one already, I don't know why I keep putting it off. Can't wait to find out which tales will be my favourites.
I just got the paperback and is on my tbr. Also signed up to order the special edition you’re working on. Very excited to read it soon. Thanks for the engaging info 😊
Kassad is such a badass, Brawne too. I love how the stories incrementally provide a fuller view of the world but there is still always a lot unknown. The book feels like an unusual type of mystery novel where some aspects become more clear but others become a bit more complicated. If you can read FoH next!
Oof this takes me way back! I'm glad you liked Hyperion so much on reread, Petrik! I myself am long over due for a re-read and a continuation of the series.
Oh man i just finished this a week or two ago, it was so good! I really loved The Priest's Tale and Sol Weintraub's tale, but all of them were pretty enjoyable i thought. I'm really excited for The Fall of Hyperion, hopefully sometime soon
I had pretty much a similar experience. Although Hyperion instantly became my favourite book upon my first read, it became even better the second time i read it because i could appreciate every part of it more. 6/5 star book!
I read Hyperion and the fall of Hyperion in the 90s I really liked them but for no reason I can think of I never read it again or got other Dan Simmons books... Until last year when I acquired Endymion and the rise of Endymion. I re-read the 2 Hyperion books two weeks ago, finished Endymion this week and now I am going through the rise of Endymion. Yeah Hyperion is so good my advice is to couple it with the fall of Hyperion read both they are very different parts of the same story. The Endymion story is different mostly 1 journey and chase so much simpler than mixing 6 different stories. The rise of Endymion starts literally few miles from where I live so that's fun but I won't spoil it.
@PetrikLeo it's moved up on my tbr. I appreciate the information that it's a set of related stories and to expect a bit of turbulence during the first reading, but it's ultimately an awesome work...
I love Hyperion. I read it last November, and I really can't stop thinking about it. I am just about to get the next book and will be reading it in February as well. If you haven't read this book and like sci-fi, just read it.
i would like to ask a question, so i hopefully some of you can help me. In theory there are 4 books in this saga, are this books sequels of Hyperion in a traditional sense or they are 4 different books in the same universe. ??? Thank you in advance.
There are all in the same universe! But the first two books and the last two books are supposedly divided by a huge time gap. If I'm not mistaken anyway!
I have wanted to read this for a while but it didn't happen yet. I will change that when my BB edition arrives! Funnily enough, I have actually read Hyperion and Endymion by the English poet John Keats, whose work is, as far as I know, referenced and quoted quite a bit in Dan Simmons' books
Hyperion by Dan Simmons is up alongside Frank Herberts Dune series. What an utter vastly fascinating telling. Space odysseys are rather rigid to get right. Though Hyperion is a real treat to enjoy.
Hyperion is ok on its own, but its significantly better once you actually complete the first half of the story by reading Fall of Hyperion. Im always baffeled how people are so obsessed with Hyperion, when it's only 1/4 of the story lol. Like...go read Fall and actually see what its about.
@PetrikLeo It's a big mystery with everyone telling their part while on a journey. Of course the payoff is a little less satisfying in a non-existential way 😉😜
I will be rereading Hyperion this year. I agree with you that the priest tale is very haunting. That one is my favorite since it pretty much sticks in your head lol. I do want to continue this series to the end. I do have a question. Will you be reading other books by Dan Simmons?
That’s the issue with that bs they say you shouldn’t read the sequels. You know what’s missing from it? Where is the last story? Who was the traitor? Why? What’s the goal of the war up there? 👀Endymion is a great duo too. Read it.
I'm not a big sci-fi fan, but I really enjoyed Hyperion, and I actually liked The Fall of Hyperion even more. So, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it after you read it. However, I would highly recommend stopping there. Book 3, Endymion, is different than the first two books and is a huge step down in quality, and the last one is not good at all. For me, it gave me the same feeling I had with Acts of Caine, where the first book was amazing (first two in Hyperion's case), and the last book is terrible.
I think if B. Scal started his career today, he would have been even better in the league with his ability to shoot the ball from 3. But ya, people always thought of him as someone who was just a locker room guy and who was one of the worst players in the NBA, but the reality is that you don’t get an 11 year career by just being a locker room guy. The dude could actually play. He just wasn’t quite good enough to ever really be a starter.
I haven’t read it. (Spoilers) My understanding is that they pilgrims don’t meet the Shrike at the end of the book. I could have heard wrong. Is that why the ending was disappointing for you?
He didn’t read the second book yet. Some typical negative people tend to proclaim that it’s not as good as the first, so don’t read it. The end of the journey is in that.
@ yeah I meant the ending of the first book. He said he was disappointed with the end of the first book and I was curious why. He didn’t mention in the video.
@@GentleGiantJason he said (if you didn’t listen) at his first read) he expected some scifi about a creature and it’s not necessarily about that especially not in the first book when the author has the same amount of pages ahead to tell what’s going on at the end of the pilgrim. All the 7 has a story to tell. All have a reason to meet the monster. The monster will grant one wish and one only. All others will die that’s the premise always of these travelers every time they do it. So only the most desperate people try it. The monster somehow can grant anything but will kill the 6 others and nobody ever survived it. This is the last pilgrimage for a long period because of some reason so they do it. They tell their story why they do it. Are they telling the truth? That’s one of the questions. Who will be worthy? Nobody knows. At the planet Hyperion the travel begins while the war in space for it almost there. It’s full with references in literature like John Keats, Hyperion the Greek classic, etc.
