This imo is the best album he ever done. He was going through or had went through a painful divorce whenhe wrote and recorded this record. Even though it's a pop rock album you can hear how broken he was and in this version you can feel the dark and lonely and broken hearted he was. I wish he would record another album like this again at least one more time. However the Letter To You album is a pretty emotional album if you listen to it closely.
This is one of my personal favorite Springsteen songs. He did sing this acoustic 'live' in 2005 at his acoustic shows. I was there in 2005 as well when he sang it. The tears did run down my cheeks, I remember.
I wish we had the original , but the message stays the same no matter how you hear it . great song , this cd ( or cassette in my day) was underestimated , so many great songs on this one
