  • Celestron's StarSense AutoAlign connects to your Celestron mount and provides an automated mode of alignment using a small digital camera. By simply pinpointing any two or three random stars in the night sky, the StarSense will detect your telescope position and adjust for perfect alignment. Equipped with Sky Tour, with the touch of a button you'll be slewing to the best objects that are visible to you at that moment. Setting up your telescope has never been easier.

2.57 Hits the nail on the head for me. Try manually aligning an 11" reflector! It's so powerful you'll waste an hour a night just trying to centre align any star. It ain't easy

The latest version of the starsense auto align IS now an auto align AND a guide scope all in one - however, its also twice the price!😛

It does a little bit more than just align. You do need to read the manual, probably several times with me due to being rather old and a bit dim before it makes sense.
After the initial align and then centring (one-off job) and align again you improve accuracy of alignment by "improving pointing accuracy with StarSense" (p.14) by adding up to 10 additional alignment points. It doesn't guide but will move to the right place more accurately and then let the mount do its thing. These points would presumably be bright objects near where you wish to view. It's job is to accurately position the telescope through out the session.

All good but it would be useful to show how to enter longitude and latitude on the hand controller.

Good video - but what actions can be taken if the alignment continually fails. Acquires 100 stars for each of the 4 'plate solve' attempts but error message states that the '... alignment is not good enough to position the telescope'. Trying again results in the same error despite being in a rural area and firmware/DBs updated to the latest via CFM. I'm stumped!

I had the same issue and have been troubleshooting for weeks with the Celestron support to no avail. The guarantee already expired as well, so they suggested purchasing a new one. Super upsetting.

Is it necessary for stargazing? I bought the telescope but not the star sense

If you want automated coordinates you dont need the GPS if you use wifi right? Because it uses your phones gps?

That depends, I have the skywatcher version, and my wifi module ( which is Skywatcher ) will not work with it

If you use the handset you do not use NexStar WiFi and SkyPortal (Celestron) on the fondleslab. If you use SkyPortal (you still need the handset plugged in) it gets lat and long and time from foldleslab GPS. If you use the handset you type in lat and lang and time from your phone GPS from an app like PS Align Pro that displays the numbers. It is sometimes better to use the handset as you can press buttons to slew without having to look at it, as has to be done centring extra calibration points for improved accuracy.

So does it matter if you rotate it in the mount

Yes, you will need to go through the whole process again

It's a hit or miss for me.
Sometimes it'll do the job...and other times it will keep searching. I'll get tired of waiting and just do a two star alignment and be done with it. I'm sure sky transparency is a factor... But on the few times it does it's job, it's ok.

In these cases, your best to do a manual starsense align, which negates trees, etc, getting in the way of the plate solve. Works the same, just that you choose which area of the sky, then another, etc

What were they thinking? It has the ability to auto-align, but not track? That seems terribly terribly stupid if you ask me.

I have just returned mine. If spending £300, I expected something that was easier to use AND something that doesn't require so much manual input from me.
I am having more success using the 2 star auto align on my telescope
    Waste of money

I agree with you 1000% … StarSense makes NoSense

  • @ssnoc

I honestly see no point in this product whatsoever - I can do a 2 star alignment on my 8 SE in a few minutes and done - the scope then slews to whatever object I select either with the handheld controller or if I’m using the sky portal software on my iPad - why do I need StarSense ? It makes no Sense.
