Checking Out Celestron StarSense Auto Align

  • I am still super new to astronomy, but the one thing that restricts my viewing (other than clouds) is time. So I decided to make the investment of buying a StarSense Auto Align for my Celestron 6SE. This is an add on I can take with me when I upgrade, and also cut my star alignment to minutes, and it can happen whilst I am getting other stuff ready.

    I use to have the Meade system a few years ago. It did everthing for you. It was much the same as yours but with an easier more friendly interface. Light polution was the killer for me. I had to travel miles in the winter to find a really dark spot. I will never forget the first time I viewed Saturn and its moons. amazing.

      Its a wonderful feeling when you get a good set of viewing conditions. It can sometimes take alot of effort to get to that position, so the more you can do to make this easier the better in my opinion (but it does come at a financial cost though).

    My mount doesn't move horizontally when I do alignment or 'goto' . So alignment repeatedly fails (tried with both app and HC). Although it points to the object along the vertical axis, the scope is still looking in the wrong direction since it didn't move horizontally. Any idea what could be off here?

    Hmm, it wasn't tracking the moon too well. Another 30 seconds and you'd have been looking at a blank sky!
    I can see it having a bigger advantage on an GEM to do away with the polar alignment steps but not star alignment and especially on an Alt-Az

    • @SpectrumGeeks
      @SpectrumGeeks  2 роки тому

      A better mount would deffo help, but it does a pretty good job of tracking when all setup right.

    • @Nottsboy24
      @Nottsboy24 2 роки тому

      Just me Again......it sounds like your telescope is not quite setup correctly! if it's not tracking the Moon to well then a number of issues need to be corrected when setting up. I also have a alt/az mount which never fails me. Always make sure the main tripod leg is facing north regardless of polar alignment, tripod needs to be level on all 3 legs, the mount positioned to the marker on the tripod if it has one and the same when attaching the telescope to the mount.....by doing this makes best use of the GOTO software. The Starsense Autoalign camera needs to be colaborated correctly only once and your good to go 🔭

    When it went from Arcturus to the moon why did it go 270 degrees counter clockwise when it simply could have gone 5 or 10 degrees clockwise? Surely it isn't that stupid.

    • @SpectrumGeeks
      @SpectrumGeeks  3 роки тому

      Apparently it is that stupid. It does some very odd routes to get to the location. Doesn't matter though, as just let it do its thing.

      Probably was at the limit of the mount's rotation

    • @AstroNerd
      @AstroNerd 2 роки тому +2

      It’s most likely because you have the cordwrap feature on. That feature sets up a point in azimuth that the scope will not cross. If Arcturus was on the left side of the point and the Moon was on the right side of that point, the scope will go the long way around. It keeps the scope from twisting around power connections you may have to mains or an external battery.
