This Watercolor was done with a single color.. there are several important lessons in working with a single color.
1 - improve your understanding of lights and darks and how they create mood and a center of interest
2 - understanding of how paint consistency translates into light and dark - which immediately can be carried into an understanding with colors.
3 - A great preparation for your color work (Watch for my next video)

I love your work, your videos and your channel Gary, thank you for all the amazing content and education!
Thanks - I appreciate your comments:)
@@GaryTuckerArtist Not at all, I hope one day to join one of your workshops. I was close to signing up to your Turkey one but time constraints put it off, maybe next year if you are around europe again.
@@Bhodisatvas Gary is coming to Barcelona and Girona in September. One week in each. I'm already signed up for Barcelona.
Gary thanks so much for all you put into these videos I learn something every time I watch one of them. The pdf's you provide are wonderful I really appreciate the work you put into these. Again thanks so muc
Doug - thanks for taking the time to send me your feedback - I am glad you find them helpful
I love this! It’s my favorite thing to do paint in one color.
Finally! the real speed painting :-). Thank you.
I enjoyed this video very much. Love the subject and am looking forward to the next lesson. Thank you
Thank you so much. You are so generous with your time and talent. Been painting for about 30 years and have never had this excellent type of teaching.
Mary
That’s so encouraging - thanks for taking the time to share ...
Best
Gary
Very nice illustration Gary. Thank you so much. It's help's a lot.
Fabulous lesson; very clear. I’m excited to give it a try. Thanks, Gary.
Thank you Gary! I finally started doing these tonal studies thanks to your videos
Very helpful, look forward to the next video.
Merci. Great lesson and nice piece of art.
Love it
Oh gosh ! So glad I found your videos. This is so super. Once again thank you so much. Connecting the mid values is so clear.
Very helpful.
Amazing!
And now I'm waiting for the color version, it will be fantastic, I sure
Thank you once again for sharing your talent, knowledge and love for painting.
I print off all the pdfs you provide and refer to them often.
Wonderful.
Christine - so glad they are helpful
Very useful....thank you Gary. l hope next you can let us know your next video how to apply them in color.
Amazing, as a beginner I’m learning so much from your UA-cam channel. I still struggle with how to take a complex scene and focus just on two or three of the features. Thanks again I look forward each week to see what you have next. Although I live in Sydney I do plan one day to make it to a live lesson in Boston. Cheers
Graeme yes I continue to find that one of the big challenges with painting - these sketches go a long way in helping me understand what I want to present in any one piece
Thanks a lot Malitre !
Very happy I stumbled on your channel; the information is really helpful. As a person very new to watercolor these lessons are really giving me a lot to work on - thank you!
Excellent tutorial Gary. Value studies are the #1 practice that improve my watercolors.
Thanks Maria - glad you are enjoying them :)
very informative video. ive never been good at getting the correct tone on my paints... might try to help me practice with just one colour
Thx Danny - let me know how it progresses
Gary, fantastic tutorial as always. You are very kind and a very great artist. I hope to see more of your tutorial and painting with you next time in Italy!
Thanks Marcello- I am happy to have a good friend in Bergamo - hopefully we can paint together again in the future
Best
Gary
@@GaryTuckerArtist You are always welcome here in Bergamo!
Very clever use of tape. That's a new one for me.
Thanks Gary, I have always done my value study with pencil or charcoal. But next time I’ll try it with neutral tint. We look forward to all your lessons.
Dennis - yes both charcoal and pencil work well - the tonal watercolor has become my warm up - sometimes becoming much more...
Thank you for this and the off. I have been trying to understand tonal values and qualities without much success. This has gone a long way in giving me a greater breakdown and from this a better understanding of what it actually means when it comes to watercolours
Sassy - I am happy that the demo is helping in your understanding of tonal values. We are able to translate color into lights and darks quite easily when we sketch - but to organize our image and become more interpretive with tonal values is much more challenging
Thanks for sharing
Gary , this was fabulous . Your painting and explanations were clear . It was fun to see this painting progress and Oh , how I love hand outs . Awesome
Thanks Diane - I love hand outs too!! Plus they help me organize the ideas
enjoying your New York series on Instagram!!
Thanks Gary this demo was a useful insight into grouping and connecting values
Thanks for the feedback Shen!
Sorry Sheri
Very helpful demonstration of tonal values. I'm eager to see the translation into color values in the next part. Thank you for another fine lesson.
Thanks David appreciate the kind words
Good to do a three tone sketch to understand the values. Thanks!
Very helpful Gary. Your videos are getting more and more sophisticated and instructive...yet, they still pale against the more immersive classroom experience which I miss so much. Cheers, Gary S
Thanks Gary
I imagine your snowbound in Wyoming- hope your painting up a storm happy 2020
Thanks Gary. I have learned, and continue to learn, so much from your videos. I really do feel that I am 'advancing with watercolour'. I never had a formal art education, so there is a lot to learn!
Thx Robert
I am pleased to hear it!
Your lessons on tonal values have been VERY useful Gary. Using one colour is relatively easy though, using several I find a challenge with tonal values. Looking forward to your Squero in colour. Thank you
Thanks Barbara - I like these studies also because it frees up my mind to think of other aspects such as edges, brushwork and such..
You do such a great job of capturing the essence of the scenes you depict, Gary. It would be helpful for me if you would provide a photo of the scene you are painting (perhaps including this in your accompanying .pdf). Thank you so much for all the information you provide to us.
Yes - I’m trying to combine new views with the videos...if you look towards the beginning of the video you will see a still of the Squero - I used this as a reference ...in truth I invented most of the figures :)
Thanks a lot for this video! I appreciated the explanation and the pdf material. Really love your painting! Ashamed, I wasn't informed about your stage in Bergamo last summer..
Raffaella, Bergamo is a gem - I am missing this city , and saddened to read about the suffering they must endure...
@@GaryTuckerArtist thanks Gary for your kind message 🤗 We try to resist.. waiting for new painting beautiful emotions 🤞
M. Graham Ivory Black is my choice of dark pigment for monochromatic paintings.
Digging the new editing to your videos. I like the new over the shoulder camera angle! And It is great see you when you speak at the beginning and end. Although, it would be great if we could see what you're doing with your palette and water. Thank you for the great lesson!
Thanks Cheezeh- I am trying out some new angles and putting a little more time into editing - appreciate the feedback :)
Thanks for this very helpful video. I saw in one of your earlier replies that you sometimes do your value studies with charcoal. Maybe you might do a video showing this method sometime? Purely for selfish reasons as this is something I want to develop.
Thx Joe
For the moment I’ve put down the charcoal in favor of the brush but I will keep it in mind for the future
😍
Hi Gary
Was your paper wet when you started your painting?
No - the paper was dry :)
Do you do a separate sketch for the tonal study and then another sketch for the painting?
Yes - it’s REAL Benefit to dry it multiple times-along the way you learn a lot
Draw it
I like the wabisabi inside your paintings and the calligraphic strokes both need some certain training to understand and appreciate.
Thanks for the perceptive remarks Katsu - I am pleased you feel that from my painting though at first I read wasabi instead of wabisabi - made me hungry for sushi I:)
Gary, welcoming back to your studio with something different is looking good.thanks for new motif, the figures you created are more like sculptures.I think it’s a hard piece.Thank you again.
Fifi- yes I am trying to show a few more angles to the paper and my cluttered studio - yes the figures are a little rigid in this one ..they became a compliment to the shop :)
Gary,l appreciate what you did.you and watercolour painting are giving my life meaningful. I love you ❤️
