My coach is also super cool with us not doing an element if we are not "feeling it" or our body is saying "don't."
Nobody warns you what gymnastics does to your hands. Women's Uneven Bars is the only exercise they have to worry about, but men have 4 apparatus that can turn their hands to hamburger - High Bar, Rings, Parallel Bars, and Pommel Horse. It takes months and years to build up tough calluses to resist the friction of gripping the bars while spinning around. Often they crack and bleed, or a blister forms that eventually rips off, leaving a raw divot in your hand. Not a pleasant prospect for holding hands on a date.

Last month just happened to be the 18th anniversary of the first time I was introduced to the sport as a whole, even if it wasn't in a competitive setting. In that span of time, I've only ever done gymnastics roughly ten or eleven times. Though it has been nearly half that time since I was in the proper setting, I do sometimes wonder if I would be able to relearn certain mechanics at 23.
