Mini Gollum Jade Bonsai tree in a nutshell

  • I am making a mini bonsai pot from a walnut shell so that I can literally plant a mini Gollum Jade Bonsai tree in a nutshell.
    This mini Gollum Jade (a variety of Crassula ovata) grew from a leaf that fell from the mother Gollum Jade plant into a neighboring container. I only recently started thinking of making a mini Gollum Jade Bonsai tree out of it since it grew naturally in this compact shape and has really small leaves.
    Given its small size and the lack of a tiny pot I came up with the idea of planting it into a nutshell to start my very first mini bonsai. This undertaking provided a bit of a challenge given the size and fragility of both the nutshell and the small jade plant but I eventually managed to complete the task. Time will tell if it was a good decision and if the small tree is going to fit into the Mame, Shito or Keshitsubo Bonsai category.

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  2 роки тому

      Cool, I've been thinking of trying a coconut shell planting. Did you use somwthing to treat the inside of the coconut? I guess they should last a long time since jades aren't watered that often.

    • @carynludwig6667
      @carynludwig6667 2 роки тому +1

      @@OddBonsai no, I didn’t coat it with anything. It takes a very long time to compost a coconut shell even in a compost bin, so using it as a planter for a succulent that likes to dry out between watering is perfect!😉
      I will probably have to replant before it (the coconut shell), rots. Actually, sawing it in half was the hardest part….had to use a hacksaw!

    I absolutely love this idea! Is this a specific type of gollum or will the leaves get smaller like a typical bonsai? I have been wanting to try mame or shohin with my gollums but am afraid the leaves won't stay small. Thank you!

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  6 місяців тому

      This plant was grown from a leaf of a normal gollum jade and is still maintaining its small leaf size. It's true that I'm not giving it as much fertilizer as I do with my other plants to keep it from developing too vigorously.

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  3 роки тому +1

      I don't know. I think it's a bit of lottery when it comes to going viral. Besides the video being entertaining enough you have be lucky for YT to suggest your video to the right audience. If it doesn't raise a lot of interest YT will stop suggesting it. This video had a week or two of several hundreds of views per day and then it just slowed down.
