Well done Dicksons of Inverness, it's genuine customer service and care that makes so much difference. Strangely enough it's a rarity.

I agree with you on the customer service, I've had 3 Kia's over 10 years and the service is brilliant ,nothing is to much trouble and the warranty is a big selling point and I'd definitely have the EV6 ,looking forward to your evaluation of it towing and just general day to day running.

Great looking car. Looking forward to finding out what the range is when towing compared with going solo. Also how difficult, or easy it is to charge at any charging station when hooked up. I know, questions questions but a very "now" subject. Glad you voted with your feet re the purchase, customer care should count for everything at any time and especially when spending over 40 grand but apparently it doesn't always.

Great choice of new car brand 👏
No matter how good a car is on paper, and how blown away in person you are with it. At the end of the day it’s how friendly and helpful a company is that gets the deal.
I was sold on the new Lexus NX 350. I rang my nearest dealership in Cambridge and was met with snobbery, bluntness, and a failure to listen to what the customer wanted. I then went to my local Mercedes’ dealership and from the second I walked in it was a smile and a handshake, and nothing was too much trouble and I even got a little discount.
Looking forward to your new adventures 😊

Yep! Similar here. I think too many businesses have lost sight of the importance of common sense customer service (as opposed to procedures and check lists.) Hope the Merc is awesome!

Andrew - as usual you’re the trail blazer in the caravan industry on so many levels. Funnily enough I was in the UK last October 2021 for 50th school reunion from those of us from Oz that live in Europe. Anyway one of my cohorts has a VW Id3 and I asked Murray how much could it tow weight wise. We looked at specs 1500kgs but low from charge to charge 259 miles or 416 klms. So your purchase has my ears pricked for the next instalment. We have as mentioned before Knaus Sport 500 FDK family caravan. Plus weight 1300kgs + 170, so perfect! Cheers Chris “The Aussie living I. The Netherlands “ 🇦🇺👌

I understand what you are saying re subbies. I think what you are saying is the dealer doesn't give a hoot & subs the work out to where they get the least hassle, even if it's only done to a minimum standard. In my suburb, we have a small family firm that makes and fits towbars. They have been in business for over 25 years. It's the only place I go for all that. What they don't know about towing isn't worth knowing. I'm still excited for you about the new car.

I had excellent response from the dealer, even though my purchase was completely handled through Hyundai Australia as they did not sell the Ioniq 6 through the dealer network. My towbar kit was supplied and fitted prior to delivery of my Ioniq 6 by Hyundai Australia, and has a max tow-weight of 1500 kg with a 100 kg ball-load, slightly lower than the Kia EV6's 1600 kg.

'Not many' I think is the answer Ian. I foresee the need to detach the caravan in about 90% of cases. How that works out in the real world we shall see when I hit the mainland in June. Cheers.

Really looking forward to this series to see how the ev gets on in a caravan world, particularly the episode when you visit motorway services on the August Bank Holiday for a charge - there’s a challenge! Swings and roundabouts re the dealers though, often down to the individual - we bought a Hyundai Tucson for similar reasons you opted for the Kia 👍 Great content as ever!

I watched this video when it first came out but have come back to it after it was mentioned on an off grid group on Facebook. While good in theory the problem is say in our case we don’t tour but use a site as a base and stay there. Sometimes the car doesn’t move for two or three days so relying on the car power would be no good for us as I would have to keep going off site to charge the car.

    Hello Andrew
Fascinating set of vlogs. Re your difficulty with the break away cable and plugging in the electrics, we have the same problem on an Audi SQ5. The solution is to fit a short extension lead around 200mm long and tie wrap it to the swan neck so the socket is in a more accessible position. Fit a small shackle to the break away cable slot so that it hangs down and makes it easier to attach the clip. Put a twist in the break away cable before attaching so that it stays clear of the road surface. Still not as convenient as your previous vehicle but avoids having to lie down on wet ground, and struggle to get up again. Looking forward to hearing about your experiences travelling around the UK later this year. Peter Hoyland

Does this mean you have sold your Nissan, Andrew? What about carrying your motorbike which you obviously can't do with the Kia. I hope you enjoy the Kia and I look forward to future videos to see how you get on. Unfortunately with an eye watering price of well over £40,000 that model will remain a dream for many of us caravanning pensioners! I would be very interested in your opinions (in a video) of where the UK caravanning and motorhome industry is going, as they continue to churn out huge heavy 8ft wide gin palaces, when there will be no electric cars on the market capable of towing them! The same applies to motorhomes. What size battery would you have to fit to power a 3500kg motorhome? This would then put the weight well over 3500kg, and most driving licences wouldn't cover that weight. Food for thought?

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  2 роки тому +2

Hi David, the motorbike went when I moved to Scotland, so yes I traded in the pick-up. As for the industry... I totally agree with you. I made a video about it last year. But at the moment there is a long waiting list for everything that is produced, so change is not going to happen very quickly. Only when that demand dries up and they're left with lots full of unsold vehicles will change really happen. Sad, but true.

When you go on long journeys, you will have to have a buffer in case the target charger isn't available, for whatever reason and you will have to plan for a substitute charger at each location and perhaps a second substitute ?

Realy fascinating to see how the technology will evolve. Have just downsized myself from big twin axle to an Eriba Troll, as hopefully next car will be an EV as well. Already the fuel saving in current climate is a much needed boost and hopefully will translate to extra range with an EV as well. Interesting. I've been in that area of Inverness, it seems most of the car dealerships are more or less in the same industrial estate.
I find most car dealerships an enigma - most nowadays don't even seem too bothered about selling cars, believe it or not!
I'm intrigued as to your experience, Andrew. Apart from seeing things as a business opportunity, many dealers seem to think "is this a trap"!
I think I'm going to find your research interesting, Andrew. I don't think torque will be a problem - electric motors have been used in many traction or motive applications for years, although non battery applications like trains, trams etc have the advantage of access to high voltages.
I believe the "old chestnuts" will still be the obvious disadvantage against combustion engine power of the time for the vehicle to charge, which can be considerable, and a disadvantage on long runs, where you could otherwise be "getting miles under your belt", and the availability of charging stations, (fast or slow), particularly in places like the Scottish Highlands(!)
Whilst on the subject of Scotland, I would be particularly be interested in performance in cold or very cold weather. Lead acid technology can be particularly affected by the cold, although there are more advanced battery technologies in use, Lithium Ion, Nickel metal Hydride and others, I suspect their performance still deteriorates a bit in the cold. I suggest battery technology is always improving (look how mobile phones pushed battery technology, particularly in capacity for a given size)! Fuel cell technology has been around for some time, if anyone could make a safe, practical fuel cell or even nuclear cell for cars, I suggest that would be a complete game changer!
With the issues I have mentioned, I think you are very well placed (geographically and otherwise) to do some great, "real life" nitty gritty testing of an electric towcar! I eagerly await your findings with interest!

Cheers Andy! Yes, lots to consider. When returning home in March I was considering how I'd do the journey in an EV as I was putting in long days with the Navara + caravan, but what happened? I got a flipping migraine through the stress of it. So while a winter trip towing Glasgow to Skye now might require an overnight where it didn't in an ICE, maybe that's not actually such a bad thing from a human physiological point of view. It's like not having biscuits in the house. While it's not as much fun as eating biscuits, it's actually better for us and we actually feel better because of it. If you get what I mean ;)

Must say I am surprised with the towing limit and range, but that range is solo and not with a caravan on the back. Would be interested in how far you get while towing, because as of yet, I have not seen a charging point that will accommodate a car and caravan and don't fancy unhitching the caravan to leave somewhere while I charge the car. Hi Matt, I ordered it in the November and it arrived early March. It was actually built and on the boat when I ordered it. I test drove one of these and liked the car, however the range dropped to about half which gave it a range of 190 miles. That is on a good day without air con or heating, so that would reduce it further, also Kia do not quote a weight for the tow ball, poor service from them, you cannot get a factory fit tow bar as well.
Just too many negatives for it to be of any use, especially at that price, good luck with wanting to tow from the Scottish islands to the sout of England, it will take about 3 or 4 days.

I think you went electric because this places you on the cutting edge and your future employment with Caravan Club. You will be in the magazine soon... Poster Boy stuff this....Andrew clever move.
I doubt you will do a professional fully costed whole life cost analysis of the difference in cost to a Diesel derivative.to include every cost ..
The cost of charging these is more than people think, especially when your away from home .
    Charging these things is fraught.
The max mileage drop off over the years is astounding.
Drop off in cold weather is prohibitive..
Drop off in mileage when towing !
Some charging points do not accommodate caravans.
At Christmas in Wales the Xmas market was placed in front of the charging points Betsy Coed on the A 5.
10 apps are needed to charge, so make sure your phone has a charge and a signal to charge so you can download the app and charge, assuming the Chargers are not broken through abuse.
    There aren't enough chargers
Tesla cars use non Tesla charging point, you can't use a Tesla charge point unless your abroad, but you try and charge on a caravan rally .
And you try and charge on a 5 site 6 amp electric point that trip on the microwave!
Your going to have to plan all your journeys.
    Your going to suffer stress.
Your going to be get cold.
My neighbour is already on his second charger after the first burnt out when charging
A close relative of mine works for a major company on global customers satisfaction..purely for electric vehicles ..not good. !
There are Problems with the batteries..
I know two people who had electric vehicles...One ditched it sent it back a Volvo, my neighbour is going to do the same ..just not practical and they don't tow ..if I told you what the other one did for a living you wouldn't have bought one...I'll tell you privately if your interested .
No room for your motorbike now.
The car looks lovely, but caravanning has to be care free it's not about the towcar.
As said I think this is more about the caravan club and making money and assistance with running costs, as you said none of the manufacturers wanted to know, and nor will the caravan and motorhome club if this is shown to fail.
