The CAT4 test measures students' abilities in 4 key areas, also called "batteries": Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, and Spatial Ability.
The CAT4 Year 9 & Year 10 test is divided into three parts, each has two to three subsections:
    Part 1
Figure Classification: 24 questions, 10 minutes
Figure Matrices: 24 questions, 10 minutes
    Part 2
Verbal Classification: 24 questions, 8 minutes
Verbal Analogies: 24 questions, 8 minutes
Number Analogies: 18 questions, 10 minutes
    Part 3
Number Series: 18 questions, 8 minutes
Figure Analysis: 18 questions, 9 minutes
Figure Recognition: 18 questions, 9 minutes
The free practice test on this video includes a sample question for each of the subsections above. Also, the questions' order is the same as the real test.
    Good Luck!
    Solutions for the sample questions:
    Sample Question 1:
    The correct answer is 4
In this question the three figures are all shapes that have the following common features: They contain four small shapes inside, where one of them is the diminished replica of it. The color of this replica corresponds to that of the outer shape.
The only answer choice that is like this is the 4th choice. The 2nd and 3rd choices are incorrect because they contain three inner shapes, not four. The 5th choice is also incorrect as it contains two identical small shapes while the 1st choice is incorrect as the color of the original shape and that of its replica do not correspond.
    Sample Question 2:
    The correct answer is 3.
In this question, the rules that connect the two figures of the first row are: The shapes in the left section experience a vertical flip in their position while those in the right section experience a horizontal flip in their position.
The only option that fits this description is the 3rd one.
    Sample Question 3:
The correct answer is welder. Electrician, plumber, roof, and welder are all vocational trades. These four occupations are part of service professions that homeowners may need help from. Doctor is not a trade school career. Work is a broad term, not a specific occupation.
    Sample Question 4:
The correct answer is fertilize. Bees work to pollinate flowers. A farmer will fertilize the soil. In this case, the first word (a noun) is performing the action noted in the second word to help flowers flourish.
    Sample Question 5:
    The correct answer is 18.
    Look for the pattern in the first series of numbers. We get from 30 to 22 by dividing by 2 and then adding 7 (÷2 + 7). Indeed, 30 ÷ 2 = 15 + 7 = 22.
    Likewise, we get from 26 to 20 by dividing by 2 and then adding 7 (÷2 + 7). Indeed, 26 ÷ 2 = 13 + 7 = 20.
The next series of numbers should follow the same pattern, meaning that the rule between 22 and ? should be (÷2 + 7): 22 ÷2 + 7 = 18, meaning that the correct answer will be 18.
    Sample Question 6:
    The correct answer is 0.36.
In this series, the pattern is as follows: the numbers in the odd positions increase by 0.04 while those in even positions halve. (+0.04, ÷2, + 0.04, ÷2, …).
The last number in the series (0.12) is in an even position, so the next number must be in an odd position. It must be 0.04 more than the last number in an odd position (0.32). Hence, the next number will be 0.32 + 0.04 = 0.36.
    Sample Question 7:
    The correct answer is 2.
    • First, the square was folded diagonally in half from top-right to bottom-left corners. Then, it is folded again in four quarters, where only the bottom quarter is visible.
    • Then, three holes were punched in the folded quarter: they form a tringle-like figure near the top vertex.
    • Since the paper was folded in half twice the holes were punched through four layers of paper. The holes will mirror diagonally according to the creases (the creases act as mirrors).
    • Therefore, when the paper is unfolded it will have twelve holes: 4 holes x 4 layers = 16 holes, as described above. They are all gathered around the center of the original figure, forming a big H-like pattern made of holes but in a diagonal alignment.
    Sample Question 8:
    The correct answer is 4.
The figure shows two converging identical triangles forming a right angle between them (look at their perpendicular bases).
Despite a lot of other unrelated lines, you can see that the only option that contains such a shape with these features is the 4th one. Do not confuse the correct answer with option 5, as the triangles in 5 are not perpendicular. Also, the bottom triangle in option 3 is not identical to the right one.
