      yeah, I think it's strange how it was totally okay to publish pictures of naked men without their permission, but if you show a naked woman, that's crossing the line. Kind of sexist.

    • @creeperave3768
      @creeperave3768 7 років тому +250

      Elliander Eldridge I think it was more that the woman was the only one who noticed, because her school actually posted the pictures up in the school to showcase his work.... I'm sure that not a huge number of guys read the Atlas of Men and there likely isn't a great overlap between the number of guys that did read it and the number of guys who were actually in it.... so it's not so much sexism as much as it is someone finally noticing what he was doing

    Ah yes....complete removal of clothing is necessary to determine posture.
    You can't tell how somebody's posture is if they're in, say, underwear.

      back then same sex nudity among students wasn't that weird. In some older schools around that time they had communal showers (think like that bathroom scene of the 3rd Harry Potter movie where the creepy ghost starts stalking Harry) and communal baths. The YMCA and many public pools required nudity so everyone could tell you were clean and promoted hygiene. Both of those were also phased out around the 60s.
      Nude medical photos were also pretty common for medical studies and students were, and still are, the main source of research subjects for various studies. Hell, i once read a statistic that around 70-80% if research subjects for psychology studies were college students, which can skew results since it results in much less variety in subjects.

      It comes from 19th century anthropometric photography. The idea is that the visual data set is most useful in general (not just posture) if the subjects are without clothes. It allowed for physiognomic measurements.
      As amusing as it is, i don't think we need to cast doubts over the moral priority of the researchers who did this kind of work. Their findings are probably of limited utility, but that can happen sometimes in the history of science.

    Using data obtained from people without their consent or knowledge is still common and typically considered acceptable -- you just have to use data collected before the study officially began and call it "archival." My master's thesis was done this way -- and people in the lab wanted to push it further, suggesting I publish EEG data on a personal friend who had never signed or agreed to anything because it was now "archival" (this I did not do).

    I am a graduate of the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1965. The Academy's Physical Training Department had created "Squads" to improve our bodies, if they were less than optimal. Two of those "Squads" that come to mind are the "Sub-Squad" for those who could not pass swim tests, and the "Weak-Squad" for those who were not strong enough to pass certain Applied Strength tests. By the time my class was there, 1961 through 1965, the "Posture Squad" was no longer part of the curriculum. But occasionally we heard references to it.
    Near graduation, some classmates and I were exploring unused parts of buildings, just to see what we'd find. In a big heap at the bottom of a defunct circular stairway we came upon hundreds of photographs pasted onto cardboard files. The pictures showed guys taken at three angles, front, back and side. They were clad in only jock straps. I realized that we were looking at posture photos, some went back to the Thirties.
    I could only guess that some of the instructors perusing the pix were interested in more than posture.

      Neither was fine. He didn't have consent. He just published the male one first. He would have gone on had he not been caught. There is no guarantee that all the young men were of legal age which is why it is redacted. It should have been recalled but that is like trying to take a pic off the internet. As to why the male was published first: maybe the "psychologist" was homosexual. Maybe the publisher though it would be easier to get the public to accept it published as a "medical" associated journal. Maybe he took longer to look thru the female pictures. Since those pics were coerced they should be considered as porn and not as any legit compendium necessary in any form.

    Link between body shape and personality? No. But body shape has an effect on self-image, which DOES have some link to personality.

    • @justinm2697
      @justinm2697 7 років тому

      Body shape does have an effect on self image, but that depends on the group you are a part of. If you live in a society where everyone is over weight, then being over weight is not a problem. Say sumo wrestlers or samoans (?) If you live in a society where everyone is thin same thing. Think ballet dancers. Granted my examples are not the best.
      But it's not the body shape that affects the personality. It what the society thinks about body shape that affects the personality. If you look at yourself in the mirror and don't like what you see, it's because society has told you that what you see is not what they want to see. And is therefore bad. But without external influences, there would be nothing to suggest that personality is affected by body shape. It's body image that affects personality. And that is dictated by where and when you live.

    It seems weird to think that there wouldn't be a correlation. Mood, temperament and personality all have effects on health and physical activity so a lot of those traits likely led to a lot of those body types, or at least that's what you would expect. I get people are born with a certain body type, but a lot of the difference would likely come down to physical activity and self control, both being good indicators of other behaviours.

    Sheldon was still sort of in vogue when I was in college and we once "classified" a number of males based on their body photos and then analyzed the degree of concordance/discordance in the class. Of course, some were clear-cut but many more showed mixed characteristics, just as people's personalities do. The classifications aren't entirely bunk but probably accurate only at the extremes.

      Unpopular opinion: a lot of research along the lines of linking physicality to mental traits was never actually debunked. It simply became anathema.

    Both my parents , both my godparents and many family friends all went to Ivy League schools in the 1960s.
    Never heard of this nude photo shoot thing.

    When I was a Junior in high school in 1969, I was looking through an outdated science book which said bad posture indicates mental illness and messing with pimples on your forehead and around your nose can cause brain damage. The book was from the late 50s.

    I always find the history of science fascinating, there is a lot of creepy and disturbing experiments, using people without their consent.

    There's an old cliché, promulgated by graduate chairs, that to make it through grad school one should not expect to live richly... there's another cliché that the gods did not care how the animals that could talk saw them but they did wear empiric headdresses adorned with cobras and hawks... And there's yet another cliché that Job would leave the way he came.

    I think the only place you'll still see somatotypes used any more is drawing classes, where they can held give a basic idea of human proportions. I think - I'm no an artist.
