yeah, I think it's strange how it was totally okay to publish pictures of naked men without their permission, but if you show a naked woman, that's crossing the line. Kind of sexist.

back then same sex nudity among students wasn't that weird. In some older schools around that time they had communal showers (think like that bathroom scene of the 3rd Harry Potter movie where the creepy ghost starts stalking Harry) and communal baths. The YMCA and many public pools required nudity so everyone could tell you were clean and promoted hygiene. Both of those were also phased out around the 60s. Nude medical photos were also pretty common for medical studies and students were, and still are, the main source of research subjects for various studies. Hell, i once read a statistic that around 70-80% if research subjects for psychology studies were college students, which can skew results since it results in much less variety in subjects.
It comes from 19th century anthropometric photography. The idea is that the visual data set is most useful in general (not just posture) if the subjects are without clothes. It allowed for physiognomic measurements. As amusing as it is, i don't think we need to cast doubts over the moral priority of the researchers who did this kind of work. Their findings are probably of limited utility, but that can happen sometimes in the history of science.
How did they even bring this up to their students? "So, for the orientation, you have to bring your medical file with you, sign up for on-campus lunches or not, and be prepared to strip in front of the camera."

According to my MIL, with a psych degree, almost all of it. I know for myself that their statistics are done quite differently than they are in "hard" scientific research. I wrote programs doing statistical analysis for years. Then, took a class in psych research. It was astounding that you could torture mathematics that way.
rudra62 I mean, it's a bit difficult to eliminate variables in humans; especially when they have this annoying tendency to act in ways that effect the outcome if they know they are being tested. Makes the statistics a bit difficult.
The things this guy did are horrible. But how did he ever think to get away with showing someones nude photo without their consent while doing a presentation a room where the person of that photo is?
Vickey because he was arrogant. He's lucky not to be jailed or killed. Don't know what, if any his punishment was but certainly not enough since he probably collected royalties off the book.
While certainly I'd like to be able to consent to anyone using or even taking nude photos of me, I don't really get how anything this guy did was "horrible". It's just a nude photo and was being used for a non-sexual reason. I'd rate it more as just rude/unprofessional than anything else.
For a similar reason why doctors used to do some unethical things back then. Laws back then was different and consent laws, well, did they even have consent laws?
We used to think leeches drinking our blood would cure disease. Long before that we thought diseases were a punishment from a god. We've come a long way. And have a long way to go, I hope. Science and discovery is never ending and always changing.
I know a guy that says that when he was in public school in the late 60s the whole class swam completely nude in the gym at school in the pool. Not around the girls, but as part of their regular gym class.
I think it's also incredibly important to note that these studies were done BEFORE cognition science came into existence. Psychology was very much a "Behaviourists Only" club. So this kind of "let's look at a physical trait and try to understand behaviour from it" instead of "let's look at the brain and see if we can understand how sub-cognitive actions can be extraprolated to explain cognitive reactions"
Humm.... That would be evidence towards his theory. As in the general looks of people changes with region and so does culture. I wounder how well that correlates.
It's actually very much like the old Ayurveda system for body types (doshas), which also connect body types to health issues and personalities www.joyfulbelly.com/Ayurveda/article/dosha/1
I remember a high school text book that talked about somatotypes and used John Candy, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Woody Allen as examples. It didn't give credence to the personality types but said that many people make first impressions based on them. I look more like an endomorph but I'm more of an ectomorph in personality.
This is a great past time example of why we need to be careful of protecting our privacy- so personal data can't be shared, stolen, or generally exploited. Don't put all your personal info on the "cloud".
Good god I'm glad they don't do this anymore. I would never want a nude picture of myself taken by my college to be used in this way. For that matter, colleges shouldn't take naked pictures of their students under nearly all circumstances anyway.
Using data obtained from people without their consent or knowledge is still common and typically considered acceptable -- you just have to use data collected before the study officially began and call it "archival." My master's thesis was done this way -- and people in the lab wanted to push it further, suggesting I publish EEG data on a personal friend who had never signed or agreed to anything because it was now "archival" (this I did not do).
one thing that is true is the stipulation that sometimes comes with our looks can definitely affect ( NOT DETERMINE ) your personality if you perceive it in a positive or negative way.
jakub rembacz 😂😂😂😂 nice meme.. but, here in my country, guys can walk around shirtless (when it's hot out) and nobody would care. Women need to cover up, but sexy clothes are allowed.
I am a graduate of the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1965. The Academy's Physical Training Department had created "Squads" to improve our bodies, if they were less than optimal. Two of those "Squads" that come to mind are the "Sub-Squad" for those who could not pass swim tests, and the "Weak-Squad" for those who were not strong enough to pass certain Applied Strength tests. By the time my class was there, 1961 through 1965, the "Posture Squad" was no longer part of the curriculum. But occasionally we heard references to it. Near graduation, some classmates and I were exploring unused parts of buildings, just to see what we'd find. In a big heap at the bottom of a defunct circular stairway we came upon hundreds of photographs pasted onto cardboard files. The pictures showed guys taken at three angles, front, back and side. They were clad in only jock straps. I realized that we were looking at posture photos, some went back to the Thirties. I could only guess that some of the instructors perusing the pix were interested in more than posture.
I remember practical anatomy class in the Netherlands. The professor stripped down to his underwear and said "now your turn". Jokes were made about those who wanted to keep their tank tops on but at least no photos were taken :/
I kinda did my own version of this as a salesman. I observe personalities then I put them into categories and then made subcategories of the main categories to determine what a new person's personality would be based on certain triggered reactions.
Nothing happened until a parent sued him and that parent happened to have a daughter. If her parents hadn't sued him he would have just continued. Conversely, if a parent with a son had sued him, his work would have been taken down even sooner. Usually the simplest, most logical explanation is the right one.
Neither was fine. He didn't have consent. He just published the male one first. He would have gone on had he not been caught. There is no guarantee that all the young men were of legal age which is why it is redacted. It should have been recalled but that is like trying to take a pic off the internet. As to why the male was published first: maybe the "psychologist" was homosexual. Maybe the publisher though it would be easier to get the public to accept it published as a "medical" associated journal. Maybe he took longer to look thru the female pictures. Since those pics were coerced they should be considered as porn and not as any legit compendium necessary in any form.
Body shape does have an effect on self image, but that depends on the group you are a part of. If you live in a society where everyone is over weight, then being over weight is not a problem. Say sumo wrestlers or samoans (?) If you live in a society where everyone is thin same thing. Think ballet dancers. Granted my examples are not the best. But it's not the body shape that affects the personality. It what the society thinks about body shape that affects the personality. If you look at yourself in the mirror and don't like what you see, it's because society has told you that what you see is not what they want to see. And is therefore bad. But without external influences, there would be nothing to suggest that personality is affected by body shape. It's body image that affects personality. And that is dictated by where and when you live.
It seems weird to think that there wouldn't be a correlation. Mood, temperament and personality all have effects on health and physical activity so a lot of those traits likely led to a lot of those body types, or at least that's what you would expect. I get people are born with a certain body type, but a lot of the difference would likely come down to physical activity and self control, both being good indicators of other behaviours.
Sheldon was still sort of in vogue when I was in college and we once "classified" a number of males based on their body photos and then analyzed the degree of concordance/discordance in the class. Of course, some were clear-cut but many more showed mixed characteristics, just as people's personalities do. The classifications aren't entirely bunk but probably accurate only at the extremes.
When I was a Junior in high school in 1969, I was looking through an outdated science book which said bad posture indicates mental illness and messing with pimples on your forehead and around your nose can cause brain damage. The book was from the late 50s.

makes you wonder how much of todays psychology is just bogus
Because nobody cared until women were involved
Look up John money and Kinsey-- and they are responsible for this trans cruelty - they were all pedos.
There were many strange psychological theories back then, however I am not do sure today is entirely different.
Dewaldt Science is a process of elimination school of thought. Each idea we prove to be wrong /should/ bring us closer to the truth.
We used to think leeches drinking our blood would cure disease. Long before that we thought diseases were a punishment from a god. We've come a long way. And have a long way to go, I hope. Science and discovery is never ending and always changing.
Well, now they're saying there are over... like what... 18 different genders?
Jonathan Tan No actually scientists believe that crap
I know a guy that says that when he was in public school in the late 60s the whole class swam completely nude in the gym at school in the pool. Not around the girls, but as part of their regular gym class.
woah sheldon cooper researched this?
Was looking for this comment. Wasn't disappointed. :)
Tell Me This I like cats :D

I think it's also incredibly important to note that these studies were done BEFORE cognition science came into existence. Psychology was very much a "Behaviourists Only" club. So this kind of "let's look at a physical trait and try to understand behaviour from it" instead of "let's look at the brain and see if we can understand how sub-cognitive actions can be extraprolated to explain cognitive reactions"
I would totally buy that there is a correlation. I would be very skeptical there is a causal relationship though.
I agree. It could possibly be the result of social conditioning. But, that might change with different cultures.
Humm.... That would be evidence towards his theory. As in the general looks of people changes with region and so does culture. I wounder how well that correlates.
It's actually very much like the old Ayurveda system for body types (doshas), which also connect body types to health issues and personalities
www.joyfulbelly.com/Ayurveda/article/dosha/1
I'm going to have to check with my witch doctor to see if there is any validity to their claims. :p
Please, let us know :D
Honestly, this was just really fascinating to learn, in general. Thanks, Scishow! :D
He was the first reddit user, and he was ahead of his time.
him: Mail me your nudes! Ha ha ha...
them: Ha ha ha ha...
Him: Seriously.
Them: Okay...
Eugene Wong Sorry, but you are Wong!
ok

sorry, it's kind of cold in this poorly heated 1940's classroom.
"Send nudes."
1880s: Okay, just give me a moment...
1940s: This sounds a bit fishy...
Post-1970s: Eww no
wish i went to college in late 1800s :/
Good luck when your spine is snapped playing American football
Drævn Ëvans - Um, Gridiron Football wasn't invented until well after the 1800's. Good non sequitur, there.
You mean “I wish I was Sheldon cooper in the 1800s”
Egilhelmson 1880s is where it began
why though...
They did it so the professors know which students to hook up with
Anything for that extra credit
Are you sure? I mean.. I watch as many naked pictures of college students as I can and I'm pretty sure I'm improving!
one thing that is true is the stipulation that sometimes comes with our looks can definitely affect ( NOT DETERMINE ) your personality if you perceive it in a positive or negative way.
Yeah and last month an AI could predict your sexual orientation just by looking at facial features.
showing hundreds of nude photos of young people to strangers who asked to see them? how could that possibly go wrong!?
male nudes= ok
female nudes= not ok
what is that paradigm about ANSWER ME please.
the fist to found out was a female.
jakub rembacz back in 1880 it was offensive to show knee if u were a woman. Yes, swimsuits for womans were like normal clothes now. Maybe thats why?
(For men it was totaly normal and not offensive)
depends on the country
in europe it was extremely offensive as far as i know
europe is a country and england is my city
jakub rembacz 😂😂😂😂 nice meme.. but, here in my country, guys can walk around shirtless (when it's hot out) and nobody would care. Women need to cover up, but sexy clothes are allowed.
"Which is kind of a HUGE RED FLAG." YOU DON'T THINK? That made me laugh so hard
I can't wait to see what seemingly harmless practice of today will make us all cringe in shame in 2050.
I love how the personalities linked with the body types were entirely based on stereotypes and not science at all
eww
i do not want to take a photo that i had to give to some random guy who basically discriminates my body and personality
Photo more like painting
that sounds even more weirder
So what were they doing with the pictures? No explanation.
Yeah thats what happens when you skip to the end
I remember practical anatomy class in the Netherlands. The professor stripped down to his underwear and said "now your turn". Jokes were made about those who wanted to keep their tank tops on but at least no photos were taken :/
I wanted to make a joke
I'm so grateful to *Philipe* who saved me from embarrassment the blackmailers would have caused. He removed all nude pictures without taking much time

"They took the photos to evaluate posture."
_Suuuuuuuuuuure they did._
I was a day student at a New England boarding school. Photos were taken with the boys in jock straps. ~1972, 7th or 8th grade.
I kinda did my own version of this as a salesman. I observe personalities then I put them into categories and then made subcategories of the main categories to determine what a new person's personality would be based on certain triggered reactions.
0:36 I know the only Sheldon who could be able to do this... Dr. Sheldon Cooper... BAZINGA!
Reported for nudity
Every reference to 'Sheldon' makes me think of Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper...
cool shirt :)
I'm an ectomorph...and an introvert. Lmfao. The accuracy.
So making the male collection is fine, but the atlas of women immediatly wasn't?
My volume was off when I started this video, but I could still hear your shirt.
Link between body shape and personality? No. But body shape has an effect on self-image, which DOES have some link to personality.
OMG!!! people not being covered by thin sheets of cloth! how outrageous!
You are correct
Sheldon was still sort of in vogue when I was in college and we once "classified" a number of males based on their body photos and then analyzed the degree of concordance/discordance in the class. Of course, some were clear-cut but many more showed mixed characteristics, just as people's personalities do. The classifications aren't entirely bunk but probably accurate only at the extremes.
Unpopular opinion: a lot of research along the lines of linking physicality to mental traits was never actually debunked. It simply became anathema.
Both my parents , both my godparents and many family friends all went to Ivy League schools in the 1960s.
Never heard of this nude photo shoot thing.
I'm glad I never had that done. I hate it when people see me naked and ask about my deformities.
When I was a Junior in high school in 1969, I was looking through an outdated science book which said bad posture indicates mental illness and messing with pimples on your forehead and around your nose can cause brain damage. The book was from the late 50s.
I always find the history of science fascinating, there is a lot of creepy and disturbing experiments, using people without their consent.
Hey man, Taking a Nude Photo's a good way to start the year!
Airs all your dirty laundry out. Confidence builder!
Wow! I'm so relieved now, I appreciate it so much *Solipide.* This blackmailers tensioned my life, even threatened me and my family but Solipide rescued me and deleted all my sexting pictures and videos

There's an old cliché, promulgated by graduate chairs, that to make it through grad school one should not expect to live richly... there's another cliché that the gods did not care how the animals that could talk saw them but they did wear empiric headdresses adorned with cobras and hawks... And there's yet another cliché that Job would leave the way he came.
Very interesting. Will be funny conversation with my mom next week. My soda exited my nose when i heard the name. Sheldon, lol. Big bang fan here duh. Love Jo
I'm 63 and luckily back in 1972 when I started in a Florida university, this never took place.
Sheldon from the big bang theory 🤣🤣🤣
Still seems like it took them a long time to phase out the pictures even after all the scandals and realizations that it was bad and irrelevant

I got a Facebook ad before this, gee I wonder why...
I've learned about Sheldon in the past; I never knew about his relationship with naked college student photos. Eughh!
I think the only place you'll still see somatotypes used any more is drawing classes, where they can held give a basic idea of human proportions. I think - I'm no an artist.
*mom walks in while there's naked people on my screen*
mom: what's are you doing?
me: uhhh...mhh....just researching the difference among the three types of somatotypes. *phew*
