I am Korean and I totally approve this video. Spot on correct historically. In fact, you mentioned many things that are often left out by Korean historians when they discuss this era. Korean Josun Dynasty was at the end of its road and was super corrupt and incompetent at that time, it was destined to collapse one way or another. This is largely due to its over reliance on China. Thus, when China fell, Korea also fell. Japan on the other hand took a full advantage of this situation and carved out an Empire for themselves.
I've read previously that the Beiyang Fleet warships used concrete as replacement for the shells. That's how much corrupt the Chinese naval institution at the time (and also the official court - who divested funds to construct the Summer Palace).
The largest myth about the war was that the reason funding for the navy declined was because Empress Dowager Cixi embezzled it for the Summer Palace. In reality it was Emperor Guangxu and a few close advisors to him who did not see the looming threat of Japan being serious. A lot of natural disasters (including rebellions) occurred during the time period so they used a lot of funds to cover that. Still the Qing administration was simply corrupt everywhere, its incredible.
@@ThePacificWarChannel I think The Western powers and Japan were lucky that the Qing government was corrupt as fuck. With the wealth and resources that Qing China had, I think it would only take 20-30 years for Qing China to overtake them all if Qing China was not rife with corruption Just look at modern China. In the 1970s and early 1980s, China was still deemed as poor as fuck, but after implementing Capitalistic reforms and somewhat good government. China was able to get back Hong Kong and Macau and have economic links with most of the world within just 20-25 years!
@@nodinitiative If it was not for the corruption, the Qing would have won the first Sino-Japanese war. It effected every aspect of their modernization process. Also the royal family was a particular problem (Empress Dowager Cixi)

No you were right to say "sigh-no", I don't know why I have been saying see-no haha. Honestly I have heard both, but looking at historians discuss it its definitely much more often "sigh-no"
Sino (Seeno) is actually correct and accurate to the original pronunciation. Saino is a bastardised pronunciation. Sino actually means China. They are actually the same word with the same pronunciation, just spelled differently. With China it should be also pronounced China (Shina or Cheena), not Chaina. Chaina (as in English pronunciation) is also a bastardised pronunciation. The original sound is China (Shina or Cheena). Thus, Shina, Shino, Sino, and Chino are all correct original pronunciation. It is just that English is the most terrible language when it comes to pronouncing foreign languages.
All of the information being presented is very interesting but it contradicts fundamental facts. The first Opium War of 1842 between Qing (Manchu Empire) China and British Empire already weakened China. There were actually two Opium Wars fought between Qing China and the British Empire. The second Opium War was fought because the Qing Government realized that unlimited import of British opium would destroy China. Qing China had lost control of its Coastal region to England, other European, and Japanese powers. A lot of British Opium flowed into China that it bankrupt China. The addiction to opium and the transfer of Chinese silver coins to the British Empire for the opium trade created an economic meltdown. There was social unrest within China against concessions to unfair foreign trade. By 1895 the Japanese had fought and won a war against Qing China and taken several territories from China one of which was Taiwan. Since Qing China was barely able to hold onto its own territory and deal with economic (domestic trade) collapse, it seems highly unlikely that Qing China can impose anything on Korea. As far as Korea and how Japan was trying to help Korea, let's not forget that Japan simply colonized Korea in 1910. The way Britain colonized India. I like learning about real history. But it needs to make some sense with what was really happening at the time. European countries like England, France, Germany are and were industrialized countries and Japan became industrialized from 1850 to 1890. Qing China and contemporary China are pre-industrialized societies. The modern conveniences China has is simply imported from industrialized countries. So just what was happening at the time has to make some sense. It has to be based on what is possible, and not what some people believe as "political correctness." Qing China never had a modern navy. Imperial China have no idea how to create a modern industrialized society. The Chinese Communist Party have no idea how to create a modern industrialized society. Northeastern China and parts of Korea were conceded to the Romanov's Russian Empire due to war. What we call the Vladivostok Russian territory was Korea and China. Seward had to purchase Alaska from the Romanov Imperial Court. These are facts, not just propaganda from some idiot with a political agenda.
