Just finished the book last night… I agree with your ranking of the three and that last chapter of Clover’s… The sense of dread reading those last hundred and some pages… Just an extraordinary trilogy!
Just finished the book a few minutes ago and I am definitely left wanting more, especially after the last chapters. For about 400 pages of The Wisdom of Crowds, I was hating every minute of it and despising all the characters with a vengeance (except for Orso). But the last couple of chapters saved it all for me / broke my heart / put the final touches on my monumental hatred of Leo dan Brock etc etc etc. Did the Weaver surprise you? For my part, not at all, though I was a bit underwhelmed and a lot horrified, given the beginning of the book. Looking forward to that spoiler talk in a big way because there is SO MUCH to get into.
Did Clover kind of drop short of his character development in your opinion? He did for me, especially towards the end. There was a slight lack of complete badass Northmen imo Loved the reveal with the weaver, just the mention of his name brought a smile to my face. Also Gunnar’s development fell a bit short for me. A certain characters death broke me. By far was my favourite person, I was hoping for more Gorst was an absolute boss lmao, loved that. Vick was kinda ok. She was more interesting when she was infiltrating different groups like in the previous books imo Leo… my god
@@Nick89000 You're right about the lack of badassery in the North story lines. Shivers was a mother hen, Stour the worst asshole ever (except when Leo turned out to be worse), Calder ... poor Calder. Rikke is fine, I guess, but tbh, I liked Isern better. And Clover just gives me huge turncoat bad vibes. I get switching sides once or twice... but ALL THE FUCKING TIME and no one kills you? Please... that's all the old bastard did, was full of wisecracks and betrayal. I spoiled myself about the death that broke all of us even before beginning The Wisdom of Crowds. Which meant I pretty much went into the book with a 'fuck all this shit' kind of mentality. But I needed to be prepared for what happened to possibly the only good man in the entire trilogy. Or maybe not the only one, there were also Gorst and Forest. I'm guessing even the Weaver lost the plot a bit when it all went down, I can't believe that he would actively endorse the amount of destruction and desecration and murder that actually happened. And though I love him to bits, I also want Bayaz to avenge himself in spades. Leo... I don't know that I have ever hated a fictional character so much in all my 30 years of reading books. Like you say... my god. He is THE WORST at every point in his meteoric downfall.
@@annarien4333 Haha, I know what you mean by 'fuck all this shit' mentality, I've had it before. Leo was just a 10x worse version of old Glokta. His arc with Jurand didn't even go anywhere?? Whenever we get his PoV he couldn't be any more loathesome and yet, in the next scenes, he is. There's none of the fine irony and self deprecating humor and cleverness that we get from Glokta. Leo, when given power, is a bully and a tyrant and he knows nothing but brutality because that's all he ever was... all brawn and no brains, no finesse, no awareness of anything or anyone except his own stupid self. He's absolutely irredeemable in my eyes and at the end of the book, he's nothing but a villain. Also, Jurand gets the shaft from me as well. I was hoping he'd have a spine and some self respect, that he'd give Leo the finger and not settle for being his lackey, but nope. And the scene with Gorst. My god, if a canon had blown Jurand and Leo to bloody pulp just then, I swear I would have bought drinks for the entire city I live in. Truth be told, I didn't like much of anyone in the new trilogy. Of the new characters, Orso I adore (of course), Rikke I like to some extent, Savine was fine for about 5 minutes and then the hell with her too. Vick is OK, I guess, but she was just a medium for us to interact with other, more important people. And Broad... is like a broken record endlessly screeching out the same hideous tune. The last book kind of ruined the previous two for me in terms of many characters and even some of the action, but that's just the emotional impact speaking.
