@@advityatofcourse. Don't you think it's possible for a political entity centered in patna gonna have strict control over far away territories like afghanistan? That too with 300bc technology? Most probably a vast majority of their "empire" consisted of tributary kings and tribes who were mostly independent in day to day affairs
Note: this is applicable for other empires like guptas, satavahanas etc.

For all these wasted 7-8 min , Kani given his natural squint eyed look ( even otherwise ) of history never once questioned those historians he interviewed why exactly would a king - any king or feudal chief , worth his salt permit the installation of a rock edict in the land he ruled if he didn't share some sort of a subservient relationship with the Mauryas , whatever the nature of that relationship ?
This is a classic example of how historians keep themselves relevant instead of coming up with new findings or new interpretations of existing evidence. Kani & those he quotes in a" I scratch your back you scratch mine club" are a good example of "such historians" trying to stay relevant .

He did address the points you are raising. He clearly said that most of the rock edicts found on religious sites which cannot be clearly proven as a symbol of political power. If you keep an open mind you can understand what he’s saying. He is just asking questions such as: is there a necessity to re-evaluate the evidence that is clearly not cross examined in quite a while
If you think that history is a settled subject and nothing new can be added to it unless it serves the egotistical interest of the majority community then you are clearly wrong. History is dynamic and we come across evidence all the time and it is important for us to alter positions based on new evidence.

@@yj9032 which is precisely why I raised the larger question as to which king would permit the installation of another king's rock edicts in his kingdom or fiefdom without being a subordinate .
After all in law there's something called precedent . Archaeology & history operate on pretty much a similar if not same principle. Pls cite similar instances in India or abroad .
Your second point is also something that I've addressed - there's actually no new findings on this issue hence no new writings on it since Romila Thapar's seminal work on Ashoka.
Off late you've a few scholars or historians like Upinder Singh , the ones named in the documentary & maybe a couple of others who've tried to re interpret extant evidence to come up with a new narrative. The results are before your eyes & sub par.
Incidentally Bibek Debroy claimed there were millions of manuscripts lying untranslated & uncurated while he was researching his translations for the epics & the Puranas.
Unless you unlock that treasure trove, every few decades you'd have to be subject or content with such revisionist history depending on your PoV.

I don't think he denies anywhere in the video that Mauryas had no political influence on the Deccan in fact he says it was aggressively outward looking. An ashokan edict can be a symbol of maintaining diplomatic goodwill with the Mauryas which could attract lucrative trade relations between the mauryas and that particular kingdom. Plus we cant assume that political power of rulers was interpreted the same way in the past as it is in our modern world. In addition the degree of political control Ashoka had in the Deccan could hv obviously changed throughout his reign (he ruled for a long period, many things can be subject to change) All anirudh is doing is exploring for nuance which is very important to do in History as asking new questions can challenge previous interpretations and can lead to new findings.

The sheer fact is that Ashoka's edicts were not some polite dharmik praises or general advertisement installed in so called other empires' premises, rather they are highly Authoritative, Regal ordinances of the emperor to be installed by him throughout his Majestic empire for the subjects, whom he regarded his children, to obediently observe. The tone of language, its craft and interpretation leaves no room for speculation, specially of the shallow explanation that the guy just presented. How Foolish you want to play 😶😶😶

The book “Ashovadhana” states that Ashoka had various Torture Chambers set up all across his Kingdom, much like the Soviets had Gulags or Nazis had Concentration Camps. One of these Torture Chambers made by Ashoka was called “Ashoka’s Hell” or “Agam Kuan” and it is still present in Bihar.
It appears that Ashoka had Sushima killed at the eastern gates. This was followed by four years of a bloody civil war in which Ashoka seems to have killed all male rivals in his family. Buddhist texts mention that he killed ninety-nine half-brothers and only spared his full brother.

This is very disingenuous to particularly say that Mauryan empire was limited in geographical reach. Throughout ancient and even medieval history baring very few empires like Roman who were very central most empires like Mongolian empire, Persian, even mughal used to have weak central control over their occupied areas. The prime aim of expeditions was to extend your sphere of influence and collect taxes from your tributaries. Most of the times they didn't overthrow the conquered king or just install a kin of the king who pays tribute and were sometimes asked to mint coin in their names. The aim was not to run the conquered kingdom via a central control and interfere in their day to day workings but just to collect taxes and accept the other kingdom as their overlords as an honorary title which in return received protection from rival kingdoms. Ashoka edicts has been found all over the country right from Kandahar in Afghanistan to Amravati in Andhra to Dhauli in Orissa. Buddhism was spread in Sri Lanka by Ashoka's firstborn who was invited by the Lankan king. This selective narrative that Ancient Indian kingdoms which are deeply revered today as pan Indian kingdoms were rather just an exaggeration is deeply flawed and stinks of bias. Even the east india company model was federal and based on just friendly kings who allowed trade access monopoly until British queen took over.
The only conclusions we can draw from these new findings is that Ancient empires were more federal in nature and didn't have absolute central rule or law. As in to think their use to be some form of a Uniform civil code in ancient empires in itself is irrational.

It was only with the invention of the gun that state became so much powerful, creating a need to abolish monarchy and establish rule of law.

The way Brahmanism spread across Subcontinent was completely different from how Islam spread. Sanskritisation is a more correct term than Brahmanism. 2 processes of Universalisation and parochialisation were involved in the 2 way interaction between brahmanical stream and local stream. Because the Vedic/Brahmanism was a vast pot from the beginning, it absorbed everything local cultures and beliefs had. And made them universal/bigger. Examples are Pooja of Santoshi mata, ritual of Govardhan/Gobardhan. Occupational categorisation, Worship of Shakti, tantric etc. There is concept of greater culture and little culture in socio-cultural anthropology. Brahmanism didn't forced the mainstream culture on people across lands. That's why you will see so many streams of Advaita, dvaita, vishisth Advaita, lingayat, ajivik, lokayat etc. It changed shape as per what people wanted it to be. Only time and people ( not Brahmanism itself) can be blamed for the ambiguity and confused history of originality and origin of Sanatan dharm. On the other hand, coercion, brutality and ethnocentrism( 'believing that my culture is better than yours' ) is evident in Islamic and Christianity propagation

There were levels to the administration and local chieftains pledge allegiance to the kings who did to their dynasties and so on. Mauryan empire clearly had a deep reach and ofcourse wasn't centralized but was impactful. In Indian context, we never had strong central political entities, we always worked as a union politically nonetheless we always had strong community and culture.

My sense is that southern boundary would have been the Kalinga empire and so perhaps no more than 1/2 of the Deccan at best. Probably less.

Yes, the alternate account tells us that the stories told so far are not the complete accounts. But I don’t see anything other than noise with the politics thrown in with slant.
