  • Australian Prime Minister Hon. Anthony Albanese visited Moem Barracks in Wewak on Friday, January 13, 2023, where he addressed soldiers of the 2nd Battalion of the Pacific Islands Regiment (2PIR) of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF).
He was accompanied by PNG Prime Minister Hon. James Marape and East Sepik Governor Hon. Allan Bird.
The 2PIR has a long and colorful history with Australia, with former Australian Governor-General, Sir Michael Jeffery, being a former Commander of the Battalion before Independence in 1975.
The Royal Pacific Islands Regiment is an infantry regiment of the PNGDF. The regiment is descended from the Australian Army infantry battalions formed from native soldiers and Australian officers and non-commissioned officers in the territories of Papua and New Guinea during World War II to help fight against the Japanese. Disbanded after the war, the regiment was re-raised in 1951 as part of the Australian Army and continued to serve until PNG gained its independence in 1975, when it became part of the PNGDF. Today, the RPIR consists of two battalions and has seen active service in Vanuatu, Bougainville and the Solomon Islands.
In this video, PNGDF Commander Major-General Mark Goina, PM Marape, PM Albanese and East Sepik Governor Hon. Allan Bird address soldiers of the 2PIR at Moem Barracks.

Security agreement should include increasing the number of PNGDF personals from 3000 to 15000 or 20000, purchasing of modern military hardwares, build 2 more PNGDF barracks to be located in the Highlands and the NGI regions, Grade 12 dropouts and tertiary graduates who can't find employment should be enlisted in for military service and finally ADF should engage PNGDF personals in overseas mission like peace keeping in Syria, Iraq or Afganistan so our soldiers can have some experience of operating in different environment .

On the security agreement should include ALLOW PNG CITIZENS TO JOIN ADF TO PROTECT AUSTRALIA & PNG. Arrange agreement like American Samoa with USA or P.Rico with USA win win for both countries.

Those are US territories. PNG and Aus are very close friends but two sovereign countries. I think it would be weird to have people joining other countries’ militaries

@@Hazza4257 correct how about British Army allowing citizens of Commonwealth nations or Gurkas to join their Arm force? P.Rico is a country of its own but allow to join US army. Same can be done as Australia built all these current PNGDF bases

@@emautafaalmidake7530 why do we need to join each other’s militaries when we can have our own independent militaries who collaborate with each other? That’s what is being discussed here
