I think the new Syrian government should borrow a page from the Ukrainians and convert the Saydnaya prison into a museum.
When I visited Kiev in 2015, one of the most memorable places I visited was the "Museum of Corruption": the palatial residence (think: Hearst's Castle) of the former leader Viktor Yanukovych who fled the country after the revolution. The Ukrainians wanted visitors to their country to learn about the lavish lifestyle of their former leader (complete with a golf course, a petting zoo, and a restaurant built in the form of a pirate ship), and so they turned his mansion and the surrounding lands into a tourist attraction.
Of course, the prison tells a much grimmer story, but it's still a story that people should not forget.

The question about forgiveness made me roll my eyes, at least the reporter seems to know it's a little sheltered. Syria is not like South Africa or Northern Island, change didn't come as a result of a low level insurgency and some political compromises. Change came only after 13 years of the most brutal civil war, and while all sides committed crimes over the course of the war, the blame for starting the whole bloody business lies entirely with Assad and his goons.
It didn't end in a compromise either, the Assadist regime was soundly defeated in the end and they kept executing prisoner and dissidents right up until the very last moment. No remorse, or even just a self preserving recognition that it is over, only malice. There is no forgiveness for that, there cannot be.

So no blame attached to the other groups in other regions not controlled by Assad?
Groups such as ISIS, Qaeda, F.S.A , The Kurdish rebel groups and of course H.T.S?
They have been committing crimes such as beheadings and shooting innocent civilians as well as being responsible for gas attacks in Douma. Also H.T.S applied Sharia law in Idlib where women were stoned to death for accusations of adultery. One was even shot in the head while shopping.

The problem was never actually al-Assad. The problem continues to be the 8 billion people who fail to muster up resources to put a stop to such people.

I like how the reporter used the word "hellhole" to describe Syria under Assad. I've never heard him use this word before. I guess this is the only way to describe an illiberal country where the citizens are tortured and killed. Greece had its share of dictators. It was almost as bad.

The very sad thing is 40 to 50 years ago Syria was a leading Arab country in the world where all religion lived in a mostly secular society with thousands of years of history.
Syria should one day return to being a country that can join the EU like Turkye

This is like something out of a horror movie! But this is what Syrians actually went through for decades. Every part of this new path and journey for Syrians, must be for and by Syrians, as to how justice is served and how their country heals itself. All the people on this programme have demonstrated intelligence, honesty and a willingness to shape a new destiny for Syria.

Why is UN not doing anything or have not done anything for Syria?I think UN has double standards. So many people suffered under his regime. And using chemical weapons for Syrians it says a lot about nature of folen president and his regime. I hope Syrians will get justice due being so oppress by regime
