    Been working on my basic seamanship lately and found your video really helpful since I'm not usually having to tie knots with the line leading away from me like in most tutorials. Thanks for pointing out the various ways to get this knot wrong. I followed along with some 550 cord and now I feel like I can make correct bowlines in my sleep :)

    Thank you again, it's best one so fare and I finally got it!

    i would say, especially for sailors, you should practice tying this knot in a clock wise and counter clock wise way. As well as using your right hand dominant and left hand dominant. Sometimes variables do not allow you to tie a knot the way you built muscle memory for. For example, if your standing line is running away from you vs. toward you (like in your video)

    This is the best instruction for the bowline knot, for a newbie like me. I have looked at videos and asked an ex military man physically show me how to do it at a picnic. I practiced it several times, but like Ryan said it was demonstrated backwards in a hypothetical example, so when it came time for me to use it, I couldn’t do it. I know it’s partially my fault, because I’ve never had a chance to use it. So your instructions were awesome. There were some comments that said it took over 19 minutes for this knot, but this video was perfect for newbies like me, (actually the first knot took under 2 minutes), thanks Ryan, good job!

    Ryan you give so many good tips, People who do knot videos on UA-cam tend to way "overthink" this simple knot. The best locking variation, 15:30 in my opinion comes from the Rock climbers community, it is actually called the Scott's locking bowline... the "over under over" of the tag end? Excellent video! Probably the very best advice you can give is just
    "Pick one method" and learn it very very well.. Since the bowline is considered a Life Saving knot in the case of a man overboard situation, you cannot afford to be fiddling around trying to remember how to tie it correctly when seconds count.. So Again thank you I really appreciate your video with the "trouble shooting"..

    Thanks for FINALLY explaining to many, that there is a 'left-handed' bowline knot! I learned to tie my bowlines like that years ago, in the military, for one SIMPLE reason...when using hemp ropes, if you tie with the 'tail' to the inside of the bite, OFTEN, the load will rub against the tail until it UNTIES YOUR BOWLINE!!! If you tie a 'left-handed' bowline (7:50), this puts the tail to the outside of the burden bite, and as a result, YOU WILL NOT HAVE A LOOSENED bowline! You also don't have to remember 30-knots to do work, being as with the left-handed bowline, you only really need 5-total knots to do ALL general work (Reef, Bowline, butterfly, figure-8, sheet)...oh, yeah, and a trucker's hitch (I really consider that a 'rigging' more than a simple knot, though.

  • @davidmadisontheguardian
    @davidmadisontheguardian 4 роки тому

    One of the very best demonstrations I've seen in years. I've tied mine really fast using the marlin hitch method; but I've deconstructed the knot over and over again in order to find out what is common. When you say that the knot continues in the same direction; that is something that I noticed after tying and untying it over and over again countless times.
    To make me remember things... I relate them to things I already know well... this looks like a 6 or a P (When tying the Carrick Bend).
    But again... the whole video was super easy to follow and now I understand why you tie it the way that you do; since it was INVENTED by the sailors - no? Seems to make sense that you should learn to tie it in practice the way you'd need to tie it when on a boat and you don't have a lot of time to mess around.

    I used to struggle with tying a bowline around an object back in the day (when I was in a situation that required me to tie it away from myself) but figured it out on my own. Thank you very much for making a video on it & explaining! Blows my mind how more people don’t touch up on this, because it can definitely be confusing. If you can remember that it has to be an underhand loop instead of an overhand, & the loop has to be on the inside (facing towards the tail) you’ll never be confused again! FYI: You can use the overhand loop when tying the Slipknot/snap method, but I’d stick with the underhand for muscle memory, because it can look funky if you are used to throwing your rope around in only one direction. (Clockwise or counter)

Many people struggled and my instructor used the rabbit hole tree analogy and you're right it is indeed confusing. I recently have decided to start learning knots for survival/outdoor purposes and was struggling ,as I would get it right and then try it again only to screw up. Your slow and easy video explains it well and I can now tie it without fail both cowboy, and bowline style with secure tail.
