Scott Freeman's book on Otis: "When Otis listened to it, he turned to Phil and said, 'I like it but it's got too many fuckin' words. All these pigtails and bobbytails and all that stuff." I've never seen any mention of Otis actually recording it. Wonder if that was Walden trying to soften the blow or Robbie's fondness for revisionism.
What a great story. As he was telling it, I thought that would have to be a great recording by Otis. Too bad it didn't work out. Ironically, someone who did record it and a good version too was Rick Nelson .
Figured the same thing exactly "It was raining from the first and I was dying there of thirst". Yup that's the bridge, no worries it was a long time ago.
You know you're addicted to Dylan's music when: following Robertson saying, "Time passes" the first thing I thought of was, "And now it seems, everybody's havin' them dreams" ..lol.
Sure, he's still relevant, and it was a real piece of work to see him perform here in San Francisco last summer, telling the crowd about how he and George Harrison wrote the song Something together. Either it's dementia, or his ego really is that big.
This Conflicts with what Mickey Jones said in his movie, The 1966 World tour (The Home Movies), "I introduced Bob to Otis at the Whisky a Go Go, Bob played it for him, Otis said he loved it and wanted to record it, but never did because of the plane crash"..
Yep, the problem with talking about the past is that, no matter how sincere we are or how convinced we are we remember certain moments exactly as they happened, our memories do change over time. Of course, we remember the factual basics such as which schools we went to, when we married etc etc, but the details about events do change as our minds reconstruct past events. There is probably some degree of truth to Robbie's recollections and likewise to Mickey's recollections, but it's highly doubtful that anyone who was present would be able to produce a definitive, truthful version after a couple of decades have passed. Some fascinating neurological studies pertaining to our (flawed) memory functions explain the processes much better than I can do here.
Otis could have just changed the words to something that had truth to him and make it work for him. Sounds like he had a change of heart about the song and Phil Walden was just making an excuse for Otis.
Mickey Jones' movie was painful to watch...especially the end of it with the Dylan imitator. The footage was great, but I don't know how much stock I'd put in Mickey Jones' memory.
Rick B i know.and is bullshit.outstanding vocalist must be credited because they put their own vocal melodys that changes the shape & essence of the song.
Goodness Gracious... This guy is a piece of work, talk about an ego. I can't hate on his contribution to The Band, but the way he comes across in this interview theres no doubt in my mind that he played a major part in the breakup...

@@pawelpap9 lol chill. There’s a fine line between being a interesting engaging person and being a condescending pretentious douche. I like Robbie and can’t deny his excellence in regards to his music. But man by this age I expect people to be more humbled considering death isn’t too far off😳
Nashville A team were bosses. 2 young muffin heads shouldn’t expect the world from some of the best studio musicians on the planet without putting in a little proof first, even if it is Bob Dylan. And btw, Grady Martin could outplay old Robbie any day of the week.
He could sell ya a Buick if he had you cornered. Your username made me think of a couple of famous ‘54 Tele guys. Jeff Beck and Vince Gill, and those are some combined chops right there.
Robbie hasn't been relevant since 1976, so, of course, his stories are self-serving revisions that prop up his flabby old ego. Just like Paul McCartney.
Well Glen - I saw Paul McCartney in 2012 in Montreal - that would have made him 70 years old at the time - in that concert he played non-stop with no breaks for 3 hours and 15 minutes - vocals - electric guitar - acoustic guitar - piano . He never once floundered - his voice was spot on - his catalog of original songs was unparalleled. He was a master of song and performance. Now I realize that along with the territory there are some human flaws but this is such a minor point in the overall portrait of the man. I believe Robbie Robertson deserves the same courtesy. Just saying .....
Cool story, but not exactly true. Because those lyrics aren't in the bridge. The bridge is: It was raining from the first And I was dying there of thirst So I came in here And your long-time curse hurts But what's worse is this pain in here I can't stay in here (Aint it clear..)
I wish these interviews with Robbie could go on forever.
Over the years, I've worn out my copy of Blonde on Blonde without recognizing how important Robbie's contribution was. ...Is, actually.
love robbie man, plus the other 4 greats of the Band.

RR's playing on "Obviously 5 Believers" is probably one of his best, if not THE BEST, lead breaks he ever recorded
This story is breaking my heart right now. What it could have been to hear the late Redding do that song...
My heart was broken when my dog died, a truck drove over him!😢
love to hear his stories - keep 'em coming
fascinating guy to listen to. would love to meet him.

not at all. man people hate Robertson. why? love em.
Yeah, man I don't understand all the haters on this guy.i love his storytelling.a magnificent songwriter.

Richie Havens did a nice version of it
Very interesting - I know the song well - but the words "amphetamines and pearls" are in verse 2, not in the bridge.
the line about amphetamine and pearls is not in the bridge, its in the 3rd verse.
...Richie Havens did Otis proud in Dylan's 30th Anniversary movie...
Let's see who's not around to say I'm making shit up. It's the Robbie royalty Robertson show.he's the bee's knees 💕💕💕💕
@Rick B easy tough guy Don't stroke out they should have ditched Robbie for Clapton lol
I like dylans version just fine
And that aint the bridge lyrics
Mickey Jones' movie was painful to watch...especially the end of it with the Dylan imitator. The footage was great, but I don't know how much stock I'd put in Mickey Jones' memory.
"Just Like a Woman..." I'm pretty much an atheist, but that's one holy song.
I guess the thing he did was playing harmonics...he plays pinch harmonics artificial and natural ones well too.
Im guessing
Why don’t you release as one entire interview ??
Robbie does a great Jack Benny
What?
The ego has landed
Yeah, I just hope you haven't grazed your ass
Levon guy, huh?
His ego soars with the angels, this guy loves to hear himself talk. Oh well I’ll still love the band till the day I die.
robbie "i write all the songs"robertson
Rick B he was kinda all about him, wouldnt give credits to vocals to levon h.wich is apsurd, rick danko, manuel, helm they were kinda roadies to him
Rick B i know.and is bullshit.outstanding vocalist must be credited because they put their own vocal melodys that changes the shape & essence of the song.
again,stfu

They broke up bc RR didn't want to cut the Band in on his royalties from writing the song. The singing fees were probably split evenly ?!
I like the length of these videos. Nashville sucks.
Legends don't need to dye their hair.
Yeah (Dylan, Jagger, McCartney, cough, cough). If you dye your hair long enough it stays in the roots.
Nothing at all egotistical about this vid, but of course people cling to stereotypes and old wives' tales.
