You've reacted to Paul McDermott before as part of the Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS) and you've also reacted to this song three times by the original artist Hunters and Collectors.
This is almost as good as the version he did with Tim and Richard while they were still performing together as DAAS. He really is a damn good singer, and as great a show as GNW was, his singing was always a highlight, whether he sang on his own or with Mark Trevorrow, or really ANY guest.
He was part of a musical comedy trio called Doug Anthony Allstars, he went on to do a TV show called Good News Week where he used to do a song during the program.
For context, Paul had been hosting the weekly news comedy show Good News Week. He didn't sing in the show. This was the end of year special big spectacular in 1997. Richard Fidler (on guitar) tries to get him to sing. Before this, Paul does a bit of a song then does some damage to the set and blames Richard. As the Dougs would always do to Richard when they were together. Richard makes the comment that he's just trying to get Paul to sing. Paul says he'll never sing in public again. Referencing that everyone has been trying to get him to sing again. They remember him singing with DAAS. After this live show Paul would launch into songs during GNW but especially in the off shoot of GNW, Good News Weekend. My favourite version of this is Paul, Tim Ferguson with Flacco singing with the young DAAS in footage from the Big Gig behind them. Tim has been talking about his MS diagnosis and the need to embrace life. Yes I am old enough to have seen DAAS on the Big Gig and this episode of GNW when they first aired. I even still have my GNW cds. You might like to see Paul singing with Marcia Hines although he's at his best with Mark Trevorrow. He is very much a comedian and the songs occur within that context
The album version of this song is stunning. I used it as my wedding song 20 years ago. Paul McDermott is one of Australia’s most iconic comedians but underrated singers. This version was for a comedy show. Their album version is haunting and beautiful 💜 DAAS harmonies forever 🩵🩵
One of the great covers of one of the great Australian songs from a totally underrated artist. If you ever get get a chance to check out 'Bottle' from the Doug Anthony Allstars (Paul's Group) it will break your heart in half - Brilliant.
I get why someone would request this song for a reaction to Paul McDermott, but would have been better off with one of the DAAS 3 part harmony versions when the guys play off each other more. You can barely hear Richard in this, and his and Tim's harmony's really do wonders to making the song dynamic. Even with the choir and everything this version just doesn't have that energy you usually get from Paul. I wonder if it's just this performance out of context or him mentally checking out during what was probably a very long recording. I saw him perform live this year and the energy was still incredible!
Yes there is a big gig version that has ok audio on youtube. I'd bet there's good quality audio versions as well. This one is a bit lackluster with the dodgy weird choice of instruments etc.
This song, when performed with the other missing member of their trio (on screen is Richard the guitarist, and Paul of course) is a three part harmony. As you correctly pointed out, Paul's version is 'one dimensional' for the most part, with the tone and notes - as he is singing in essence, his part from out of the trio. You can hear Richard harmonising with him, but the three together made this song as popular as it was in Australia. I'd def recommend checking out the Doug Anthony All Stars version featuring all three (Paul, Richard and Tim.) DAAS is a definite must for anyone who happens to appreciate both raunchy comedy, and vaudeville/cabaret.
The best of DAAS songs are all about their incredible harmonies which are completely lost here. The Auld Triangle / Brendan Behan Is Dead is worth checking out.
Hos voice is so good ..seen him live couple times..he really reminds me of gospel style singing as he can really belt it out when he wants ..funny as too!
I'm pretty sure you reacted to Paul (as part of Doug Anthony Allstars) doing a cover of Heard It Through The Grapevine before. The completely acapella version is better.
If you want to understand Paul McDermott's relationship to this song listen to the Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS) - Dead and Alive album. It is a musical comedy album full of filth. Some of the most off color and offensive jokes anyone has ever voluntarily recorded. Then almost one hour in, this song in three piece harmony. Non-ironically, just performed clean, no jokes and at a level that makes you stop. It's almost a redemption story, they have been so vulgar and offensive for an hour but then for 3 minutes they sound like angels.
Three different, maybe more, kinds of passionate sentiment have been emoted along with this song"s lyrics. This one is beautifully, starkly, sombre. Paul is a very sharp and cheekily dark comedian and I am old enough to have seen his performances with the rest of his trio on the old very popular comedy show The Big Gig and others. Paul had a lot of emotional damage, which he vented and soothed through dark humour and song from growing up with a strict catholic childhood in home and school. He referred to his family as " the bloody Catholics." So he had a strange relationship with all sorts of religious hypocrisy and feelings of guilt and abandonment (I think) and wanting to ( I think) know that there is a saving Lord and not one, believing in brutal, senseless punishment and yet turning a blind eye to those who sin against the weak. I pick this up from the kicking he gives organised religions in some of his hilariously delivered, sour insights into his youth, like a razored bull whip making the audience gasp and laugh and connect. So this song was sung by this former choir boy in a more reverent beautifully poignant almost beseeching prayer like reaching out to know that he could be understood and embraced by a truly loving Lord. A different kind of passion to the sexy video forced into accompanying H&C's version. The original kind of passion intended for this song was for the mourning of a recently passed mother. That was the sentiment of the original H&C's rendition. However audiences took it as a song about estranged lovers and the later sexy video was made.
No Mark Seymour of Hunters & Collectors is the origonal Singer probably wrote the song as well. You have done Paul in DAAS ,think the song was ,Heard it through the grape vine .M Seymoure is also the brother of Nick Seymour in Crowded House.
Had a comedy act with the Doug Anthony All-stars that used to cover songs with twisted words so yeah he could sing he was with Tim Fergerson & Richard Vidler back in 1984 they started
Personally, I don't think that this was the best version of him covering this song. There are versions he did with DAAS where it's just his voice and Rich's guitar, those are the best I think. Here, there's a lot of other things going on, like the band, other singers and the coloured lights. Maybe that's what resulted in the disconnect that you sensed, just too much going on.
He is in DAAS. you reacted to them doing Heard it through the Grapevine. You must listen to The Auld Triangle / Brendan Behan Is Dead by them. It is amazing. Or the original of them singing this. Try these you will feel it !!
@ThatSingerReactions Paul McDermott developed a particular style of performing when he was with The Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS), where all his expressions went into the comedic songs, but he would be quite stony-faced whenever they occasionally sang a serious ballad. He never really changed that performance style after DAAS split up. Paul does have a captivating voice when heard in a better context than this video, which was the end-of-season episode of satirical TV show 'Good News Week' which he hosted from mid-'90s well into the '00s.
The Quality of the recording and the song is not great. He was a Choir Boy. There is a heap of live examples of him singing after shows to private groups. That have a much better song quality. This song i used to think was ok but has aged very badly. Try the War song with his group DAAS. Also a staircase version of Stone Crows he does. Captivating. Also back in the DAAS days some of his naughtier songs actually really highlight his vocal training. You are spot on by the way.
It sounds so much better when both Tim and Richard are harmonising with him. Best DAAS version is from their Dead & Alive show from the early 90s. It never sounds as good when one of them is missing. You're right, this particular time of the many times he's done this song was very flat and distanced. It was the worst version to pick.
Context is a beautiful thing... you had none coming in to this with Paul McDermott and what he has done. Think you may have reacted to Doug Anthony All Stars at one stage(?) although that's not a rabbit hole YOU want to go down. Paul McDermott is remarkable, just not overly relevant to this channel I think.
The reason you are not feeling it is because he has spent the decades crafting himself as a comedian not as a singer. The Doug Anthony All Stars - DAAS was the crew.
As a new subscriber, can I please recommend you react to The 'Doug Anthony Allstars' cover of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine'. It is Craig, Richard, and Paul at quite possibly their best. Search 'DAAS: The Big Gig - I heard it through the grapevine' for the original and best version of the cover
I adore Paul voice but the choice of song isn’t the best. Yes he’s a comedian with incredible wit but I always love hearing him sing during GNW taping. ❤
Love a bit of Paul singing. This wasn't the best. I felt that the backing vocals were on there own time line and they couldn't be controlled for the pace. Must look at some of his other vocals for sure. He now hosts a game show and looks like the colonel lol.
This particular version just didn't give him or the song justice...look up a version by DAAS (DOUG ANTHONY ALL STAR) which Paul was in or another song like slow ride home, which is gorgeous! ua-cam.com/play/RDLULptWzTUNo.html&playnext=1&si=RfIGxJOmzsppebV1
Or the one you did before might have been DAAS singing I Heard It Through The Grape Vine, if not, that is really worth a watch! ua-cam.com/video/5brqK2xIIns/v-deo.htmlsi=1EGUtZ7DZnS9Ruug
I can hear what you mean about his emotions not being engaged with the song, and I guess that's why he was a successful comedian and not a successful singer.
He's a comedian first and foremost. He used to throw in a serious song during the show just to change things up and give the laughter a rest....
Err no the trio started busking and started a group called Doug anthony allstars in the early 80s
You've reacted to Paul McDermott before as part of the Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS) and you've also reacted to this song three times by the original artist Hunters and Collectors.
This fool did not even know the song ?
This is almost as good as the version he did with Tim and Richard while they were still performing together as DAAS. He really is a damn good singer, and as great a show as GNW was, his singing was always a highlight, whether he sang on his own or with Mark Trevorrow, or really ANY guest.
Like most people have said, Paul is a comedian first & sings a bit. Whole package is incredible.
He was part of a musical comedy trio called Doug Anthony Allstars, he went on to do a TV show called Good News Week where he used to do a song during the program.

Be a good idea if person requesting gave a little background and perhaps say why this was requested. Paul McDermott is amazing with context.
Hos voice is so good ..seen him live couple times..he really reminds me of gospel style singing as he can really belt it out when he wants ..funny as too!
His humour is as naughty boy, but could get away with it
You saw Paul McDermott with DAAS singing “I heard it through the grapevine” and you loved it and had no idea why ❤
I'm pretty sure you reacted to Paul (as part of Doug Anthony Allstars) doing a cover of Heard It Through The Grapevine before. The completely acapella version is better.
Hunters and Collectors wrote and performed the song. Paul covered it because he loved it. Pearl jam fell in love and had Mark sing it on stage
Did he listen to this instead of H&C's original version first or what, dya know, mate? Bad form if so from those who suggested it.
If you want to understand Paul McDermott's relationship to this song listen to the Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS) - Dead and Alive album.

He’s an Australian comedian
He has done some brilliant songs. Try "Oh my stars" beautiful song about refugees.
He was actually an artist first that turned to comedy and singing to get money for canvases, that isn't to say he doesn't have a fine voice.
@ThatSingerReactions Paul McDermott developed a particular style of performing when he was with The Doug Anthony Allstars (DAAS), where all his expressions went into the comedic songs, but he would be quite stony-faced whenever they occasionally sang a serious ballad. Hunters & Collectors wrote it with very few notes IMO

The D.A.A.S version is so much better and give his voice the chance to shine, reccomend it.
There is another version of him singing this song that is much better without the music distraction
The version from the 'For Holly' concert would have been much better.
The sound might not be from the stage mikes and it could be a comedy gig ,It could be recorded from any where .
DIMASH 😢🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
It sounds so much better when both Tim and Richard are harmonising with him. Best DAAS version is from their Dead & Alive show from the early 90s. It never sounds as good when one of them is missing.

You did DAAS before mate.
The reason you are not feeling it is because he has spent the decades crafting himself as a comedian not as a singer.
The Doug Anthony All Stars - DAAS was the crew.
the version with DAAS is soooooooo much better I have know idea way he made you sit through this crap

He already did a while back, but he doesn't realise Paul's from DAAS; that's why he felt he knew Paul from somewhere but couldn't work out from where.
I adore Paul voice but the choice of song isn’t the best. Yes he’s a comedian with incredible wit but I always love hearing him sing during GNW taping. ❤
ua-cam.com/video/zO36WYxcccY/v-deo.html this is my fave one by Paul with Fiona….. beautiful
pmsl no he is not the original maker of this song
just a comedian who did a cover version
Love a bit of Paul singing. This wasn't the best. I felt that the backing vocals were on there own time line and they couldn't be controlled for the pace. Must look at some of his other vocals for sure. He now hosts a game show and looks like the colonel lol.

You picked the worst version of Paul covering this song . This arrangement was pretty awful . The DAAS versions are much better.

Paul McDermott : Bottle, Palamino , kiss me now ( a duet).
ua-cam.com/video/u-BGlQ1U6ek/v-deo.html
Paul's not a professional singer, more a comedian -:the original is much better imho. He does do a song called The Bottle which I find really great.
Lol
This is the Paul McDermott song you have to see. ua-cam.com/video/zO36WYxcccY/v-deo.html
Listen to his voice in this on, beautiful. ua-cam.com/video/lk3Uj1EL5-8/v-deo.html
I can hear what you mean about his emotions not being engaged with the song, and I guess that's why he was a successful comedian and not a successful singer.
We have a couple of comedians who rate themselves as singers. Adam Hills is another. They should stick to the comedy.
Adam Hills version of the National anthem while impersonating Jimmy Barnes is GOLD
@@sammy_dog Or...is it just Fool's Gold, Sammy...just Fool's Gold?
@@mrmockatoo6786 yes its fools gold fools are funny so was that song so it is GOLD
Paul McDermott is actually a trained singer and was known for his musical comedy for decades.
@@raylouis7013 trained dogs can bite their owners too.
I know people love this song but I find it stalkerish and boring.
Oh you did not😮
