- I need a couple of things for my workshop so decided to refurbish, repair and sell one of my Sinclair ZX Spectrums.
Ebay listing will go live at 8pm GMT on the day this video is released. (Link might not work till that time). I will also try to live stream for the final hour of the auction to watch it with anyone that wants to watch along.

Nice video, hard to beat a quiet sunday am with a speccy repair video from Lee 👏🏼
Have a lovely Sunday!
Best of luck Lee!
These videos are coming thick and fast. I approve!
The best thing is I'm enjoying making them!
@@morefunfixingit sounds like a win/win!
two things i have done with speccies recently
1 - i replaced a couple of faulty roms with JGH eproms , that works nicely
2 - pin header at the voltage regulator , i had similar trouble to you with dodgy regulators and it became easier to stick a bit of header in and use it as a plug socket , seems to work ok no fouling
Good luck on the auction! One day I'll find an actual Sinclair Speccy for sale in the US.
We should set up an exchange where we send our cheap Spectrums and Amstrad machines and you send us your Atari 8bits and Apple II's
Thank you for the Kofi! 😍
Another quality repair video... Just one point. Consider installing an npn transistor for composite mods... It's a better picture and doesn't load the video circuit as much
Will keep an eye out for the auction, this will look nice next to my The Spectrum for a spot the difference :D
Twins!
Lee, I would absolutely buy a computer or console from you, without any doubts or reservations.
That's very kind of you Stu
Nice job, enjoyable to see your soldering skill too! I wonder what it'd be like to recreate a spectrum motherboard with all modern surface mount components? I love those old ground plains, but I can't help but wonder how much impedance matching and ringing is still causing a certain amount of those jails bars? I mean sure, Composite is never gonna be great but even at those low resolutions on modern LCDs, it's as you said, some parts of that board are gonna pick up interference ... I mean the large ground holding bit Cap on the left down, looks like a WiFi antenna I've seen on other boards!
There are a few recreations that use SMD components. I cant remember what the output was like but I think they use better quality video encoders too, so might not be apples to apples.
That inline capacitor on the test lead is a Nichicon one, so will be decent quality.
Marvelous!
Yo estoy buscando uno averiado pero están a precios intocables😢, buen trabajo. Saludos.
Would you recommend a recap as a baseline for 48k and Spectrum +'s ? Also, how did you stick the faceplate down ? Wish me luck on the auction !
It depends a lot on which issue Spectrum it is. You can get anything from issue 2 all the way to issue 6 inside a + case. If its a 2 then recap it for sure. If its a 3 then you probably should recap it, but its not going to be quite as urgent. 4 and above are usually ok, but if its faulty I would recap it just to rule that out before desoldering chips.
The faceplate had some really good double sided sticky tape already on it, I just reused that.
Good luck!
@@morefunfixingit Thanks for the advice and luck !
It says non found item on eBay (at time of writing this).
It doesn't go live until 8pm GMT
Yes the listing isn't live for some reason?..
Listing goes live at 8pm
I would have blamed the cable or the RCA jack for the video interference first. Contact isnt always the best on those even from new. Not this time though.
It kinda was that, but at the capture end of the cable!
@@morefunfixingit I would suggest making your own RCA cable from guitar cable and quality connectors like neutrik for example the biggest advantage of those is that they are really easy to work. They are also really rugged. I have been making my own instrument and hifi cables for years and I can tell you they are all better than any I have ever bought.
I like this idea!
@@morefunfixingit It's a good one. The pro audio grade connectors reallya re something else. I use neutrik because that's what we used in my PA course and all of their products that I have used are very well thoguth out. You may have simular luck with brands like switchcraft, or nakamichi etc depending on what is easily availible where you live. There are some pretty decent knockoff neutriks to but there mileage may vary. Klotz make good cables ar decent prices but your local music shop will probably have options but make sure it doesnt have the woven style braid.
