I met Chris Peacock at an upmarket cafe in Salisbury (Wiltshire, not Rhodesia) around that time. He was around 6'4". I said something like, "Didn't realize you were so tall" (I was quite tall then, 5'11"), and he said, "Oh, they cut my legs off before filming!" He seemed a nice bloke.

Perhaps they had good reason to be less than cheerful after serving the region so well for nearly a quarter of a century ; and for making a great contribution to the network

I remember not looking forward to 1982 at all, saying to myself at the time, "I don't want 1982 to carry on and I don't wanna die". Feel free to have a laugh at that one.

Even Mitchelmore stooping to Portakabin TV jibes. They only worked in Cabins because Southern were too bitter about losing the franchise to let TVS integrate into the studio complex, taking it out on them rather than the IBA who made the decision. Southerns bid was 16 pages and described as “Laughable” so bad they were invited to resubmit.

You could probably hear the teeth of James Gatward and most of his staff grinding away when Richard Stilgoe sang Portakabin TV...

Southern served the region well in a friendly, community, coastal, countryside way , but for me TVS was like a breath of fresh air, graphics and output, so I think it was a necessary change that modernised and updated TV broadcasting across a wider area come 1982. Southern only seemed to up its game a year or two before the franchise was up. So I do think they were both complacent as well as hard done by with how the IBA treated their renewal application. That said, TVS lost it's way by the early 90s through being too slick and generic, and (the changeover to) Meridian never really matched either (previous) station at their best or worst - football & news I think that was it for localness on Meridian. Now of course ITV Local News is all ITV branded and which "local" ITV companies make original programmes, not many? Only Fred Dineage has endured and across three different companies in the South, and is truly a top man.

So, in other words, Southern's license going to TVS was all for the best?

It's such a shame that the whole affair was lowered by the Portakabin TV references. It's so petty and bitter.

Such a shame that you cut the headlines from ITN on the Penlee disaster. A few words of a real tragedy compared to Southern's crocodile tears at loosing their franchise would have been apt. Let's be honest - Southern lost it bad time - reading from a printed script rather than an auto-cue? And railing against the ITA and "Portacabin - TV". Such poor professionalism.

    Hi,
Can I ask how I can find old episodes of Day by day please?
I'm looking for an episode between 1966-1968, with an interview of a tar tanker driver (Frederick Bridger) whose lorry overturned around the Fordcombe/Penshurst area. He is my grandfather and Im trying to locate this small clip for my Dad. Thank you for your help, Hannah

Southern was supposed to cover Brighton, but I always remember Southern as being far too Southampton/Basingstoke/Poole focused. It was dreary middle England stuff.

Southern Television was so bland and culturally so ingrained in the1970s (which were really depressing), just check the lighting in the studios! Or TV series Worzel Gummidge for entertainment! TVS, on the opposite, was all colourful. A breath of fresh air indeed.

EDIT NOTE: I have at least come to note from the Comments from the 2nd part of the available portions of "And it's Goodbye From us", that listed the Staff at Southern at the time. So, Disregard the original Comment. Disregard the Original comment. Apologies, (TASC2002)

The IBA decided Southerns prospectus for the 80s was dull and was stuck in the 60s TVS offered something new and exciting and went with them.

@@dlamiss Well what the old IBA did was there decision but if it was right to withdraw Southern Television yes and no it was the right thing as Southern was stuck in the 1960's. Also was it right to end TVS Franchie back in 1991 again yes and no. But who made the best programmes Southern or TVS well both

None of the shareholders were local and they never really covered the east of the region in any depth. Viewers in North Kent were probably not interested in local news from Southampton and immediate environs.

So called 'Southern TV' were owned by a company in Dundee who weren't remotely interested in Southern England and their application for the franchise from 1992 ran to 14 pages, everyone else's were over 200 pages long. They thought that they had it in the bag but as the old saying goes - pride comes before a fall.
