That's because this Bill passing in a Developed country would set a DANGEROUS Precedent for the rest of us! It'd tell every other Politician that they could just Brain wash their People by shoving Shill stuff to them over the Internet!

As an American I find this all to be very fascinating. I know the bill is not for me. It's specifically for Canadians viewing online content. But I (probably so many people around the world) have learned most of what we know about Canada because we saw a Canadian UA-cam video or show or movie. I would never just lookup how the Canadian senate works lol, but I subscribed to your channel because I like you content and now I know how the Canadian Senate works..
Really respect your commitment to this cause, JJ! Even when your channel is arguably one that could benefit from this bill you're still selfless enough to get out there and fight for Canadians' rights to choose what we watch and create.
If the bill passes it would decimate his channels analytics. Most canadians don't really care about the stuff JJ talks about. So if his channel was forced upon most canadian viewers they would click off immediately and kind of kill his CTR in return killing how many Americans or internationals see his videos. In reality canada is 0.5% of the worlds population and you can't survive on 1 million people watching your videos. Especially in the standard modern canadian city where it costs me 1800$ per month just to keep a roof over my head in a relatively "cheap" city. Canadians turn on cable see all the garbage CANCON is pushing on us and then they immediately turn it off, cancel their cable subscription and watch netflix or youtube instead because we get to choose what and who we watch.(as it is now) The only debatably good show pushed by CANCON is murdoch mysteries and that isn't even airing new shows anymore. If you read my comment J.J its not a bash against you, I really enjoy your content but most canadians probably wouldn't be too interested in Canadian politics as they are too caught up with what the Americans are doing and how "evil" they are.

US Senate blocks all sorts of things. The Senate has no rules on debate length, so senators sometimes use something called a "filibuster" to delay the passage of a bill for so long that it dies, even when more than half of the senators wish to approve it. This is done quite often when the two houses of Congress are rules by different parties, like in 2018-2020.
Thank you again JJ. I wrote a letter to the senate committee chair, but of course, have no idea if they even received it, read it, or considered it. From my perspective this is so clearly a ridiculous, unnecessary and harmful loss of Canadian liberty. Keep up the fight!

"To specify that the Act does not apply in respect of programs uploaded to an online undertaking that provides a social media service by a user of the service, unless the programs are prescribed by regulation;" taken directly from the official bill. I may not know much about law but, it seems that it says that it does not apply to social media platforms. Just things like broadcasting stations and radios.
Here's my issue with C-11 and the notion of 'Canadian content'. In 2015, Justin Trudeau said, "There is no core identity, no mainstream in Canada." With that in mind, what, exactly, is meant by C-11's intent?
Content created by Canadian is Canadian content. the wants to promote canadian made content across all streaming platforms to both support domestic producers with more viewers and more revenue which netflix, google, etc will have to contribute to fund more Canadian content.
The little conversation you had with Jreg (the cameraman) on the way to the hearing was such a genuine moment of reflection on yourself and Canadian politics. Insightful and truthful The people you hang out with are pretty lucky individuals, I must say
I think the premise of Bill C-11 is frankly dystopian. If something like that were to pass if I were living in Canada, I wouldn't mind taking it to the streets to stop it from being passed at all, much less with any amendments. Also, I'd expect a similar degree of protest from a portion of the country. Any teenagers and young adults hearing about this bill should feel concerned.
I'm Filipino but I do share the same opinion on Bill C-11. I mean if I were forced by the government to watch Ang Probinsiyano, Eat Bulaga, and literally none else, I'd be pissed myself
To keep the peace by being polite is part of the cultural consensus of Canada. Being intelligent or different or intellectually iconoclastic is frowned upon.
I watch a very wide range of content on the web, some of it Canadian, some of it American, European, Japanese or Korean. It has broadened my horizons. I have learned a lot and I beleive that there is much to be gained by taking ideas from outside and applying them at home. I think that it would be a mistake to narrow our horizon.
As a relatively left wing progressive, I'd just like to say I appreciate what you've done for the community. I feel like it's important for people to see these debates past the partisan divide. I have no obligation to support this bill and this government the same way a conservative had no obligation to support the Trump admin.
If you are against infanticide and for self defense laws AKA second amendment laws in the USA And having a secure border And you believe in freedom of speech you are now considered conservative! 5 or 10 years ago you may have been considered liberal but not today
I've never been a fan of the Senate. However, I can't deny that it seems that the Senate deliberations on the invocation of the Emergencies Act likely encouraged the Trudeau gov't end the invocation of the Act earlier than they otherwise would have. Even if their whole purpose is to save us from government overreach every 50 years or so, it might still be worth having a Senate just for that purpose.
Thank you for not only are you fighting for a cause you believe in, but also demonstrating the workings, merits and shortcomings of the representation part of a representative democracy
As a UA-cam producer, over 90% of my audience is in another country. How does the Canadian government have any right to tax or influence or modify what I do? I already pay the US taxes....
He should do one on the evolution of the footballs. American Football, Canadian Football, Australian Football, Gaelic Football, Rugby Football, and Association Football.
Not a Canadian, but I've spent most of my life quite close to the border and can typically relate better to Canadians than most Americans. Its such a wonderful country, and it would be such a shame to see their culture (however subtle it may be) get curated like this. It would set a really, really bad precedent too for other governments to curate their online image through micromanaging as well. Thank you for fighting so hard for this, and informing everybody, even though it seems that very few people care. Unfortunately I doubt you'll make much of an impact on the legislation itself, as that is mostly governed by heaps of cash as always, but its a valiant effort and a great example of how citizens can work to make a difference. Keep up the good fight and best of luck with your efforts!
how do you relate better to Canadians than to Americans? They're the same culture! There's more difference between regions in the US than between the US broadly and Canada broadly
I like to imagine that the friend who is following JJ in the second segment singing and making jokes is behaving exactly how I medieval jester would to calm their Liege before a meeting of rival counselors and lords
As a Scot I really enjoy the Canadian content. I would find it difficult to find this material without your easy to digest videos. They are well considered and entertaining. Thanks from Edinburgh
As an American I feel the same. I watch content that comes from all across the Anglosphere, and I think it’s very important that all of us stay connected. Despite the many differences among us we share a same general culture.
There is nothing wrong with Canadian content. Canada has just as much talent as anyone else in the world. The problem is that we also border the US, and often get flooded with American content and as our cultures are fairly similar, its not always easy to tell (as a viewer) whether the content you're watching is Canadian or American. And honestly, the vast majority of viewers don't care. We just want to watch something entertaining. But the various culture and heritage ministries care, so a long time ago (the 1980s I think? Go ahead and fact check the date) it was decided that we needed to boost viewership of Canadian content on TV (long before the internet never mind UA-cam), and so various regulations were setup to do that, the most prominent being: 1) Broadcasters were forced to show a certain percentage of "Canadian content", and 2) A fund was setup to finance the creation of new "Canadian content". This fund is paid for by broadcasters so that politicians didn't have to deal with calling it a "tax", which triggers a lot of people despite the same funding eventually coming out of pretty much the same pockets anyway - ie: average Canadians. #2 is the real problem. While it may sound like a good idea on the surface, what it amounted to was a whole hell of a lot of absolutely terrible crap being produced just for the sake of filling quotas and timeslots, garbage that would have never been made never mind broadcasted without the government interference. That's not to say good Canadian content hasn't been made. Even some of the shit shoveling occasionally unearthed a gem. But the ratio was so skewed toward garbage, and that garbage being broadcasted to maintain percentages, that the overall ecosystem got an extremely horrible reputation within Canada. As a foreign viewer though, you wouldn't see those things. Whoever in Scotland imports foreign content simply wouldn't import the garbage, so you'll always be seeing the best of what Canada produces (that's not a particular issue with Canada of course - all countries produce some amount of garbage that just never makes it to foreign markets. CanCon laws just make the good/garbage ratio worse for those of us who get to see/ try to ignore the full gamut). I'm not explicitly opposed to the idea of _promoting_ or _encouraging_ Canadian content. But trying to _force_ it tends to inject a lot of negative consequences that end up doing more harm than good to the Canadian content ecosystem. It would also help if they'd update the poor/outdated definition of "CanCon". As it currently stands, it would fail to cover a lot of Canadian UA-camrs for example, despite the entire production being made by Canadian creators and produced wholly within Canada.
But won't the majority of peoples feed, still be from chanels that they have subscribed to? Will it affect search results? Or just what passively gets recommended to you? Everyone could just search for what they want to see, to get around being spoonfed and continue to ignore the sanitised canadian content.
i know a senator (used to work for him prior to his appointment) and he's really into modernizing our banking and such...keeping canada competitive through entrepreneurship, ....I think he'll fight to support this. Stay hopeful!
@@Tribuneoftheplebs or you scale to population with a slight bias to favor small provinces. Like give 1 senate seat for every 500,000 or 1 million citizens in a province and each province gets 1 or 2 by default if they are under 5 million.
If you did the system I suggested (and did 1 seat per 1 mill), Ontario, Quebec, and BC would have 27 or 28 seats combined and all the other provinces would have about 28 combined. You could have a President of the senate that’s voted by national popular vote as a tie breaker.
I am not very familiar with the system of senators. They are not elected. How do they represent the interests of us people? Doesn't it only work as the henchmen of the rich and powerful from a pure logic stand of point? Maybe I'm wrong, hopefully someone can provide a simple explanation.
I was thinking “Why would they do such a nationalistic, fascistic thing?” and then I learned that Canadian TV has similar Canadian requirements and I kinda understood.
Oddly, despite me being an American, your journey and explanation of Canadian Government is fascinating to watch. Clearly this bill is misguided, and I hope that you made an impact.
"Just leave creators and audiences alone." Exactly. J.J., thank you for this fight. I am by no means a "MAGA" anti government type person, but I don't see how this particular bill helps Canada as a whole and Canadian creators and audiences. If anything, they are limiting Canadian audiences access to the quality videos and information they desire.
Because you mentioned your audience being "mostly international" I'd really love to see a country breakdown of your viewership in an upcoming video. I imagine your largest audience would be in the US given the language, population, proximity and most of all how much you talk about US culture but I'd like to know more about the other countries and why you think you're popular there

Thank you for all your efforts on Bill C-11!
@@VileStorms lol lots of people enjoy shows produced by Canadians. Just because you only like murdoch mysteries (which i think is terrible) doesnt mean people dont watch it. @@zwicker5585 He talked about it in previous videos. It may push his videos to canadians that don't care they will click on it just to see what the first 30 seconds are and then click off resulting in his CTR being bombed and youtube not recommending his videos to non-canadians.
I didn't say I liked murdoch mysteries, i said it was on of the few CANCON tv shows/movies that isn't completely dog crap. Same goes for canadian music, I can only listen to nickle back so many times.
@@VileStorms but where in the bill does it say it will force Canadian content to lose global viewership? We already have a section on the homepage dedicated to news and stuff, I don’t see how that’s bad. @@VileStorms like I have a feeling it’s always in UA-cam best interest to push videos to people who will like them. I don’t see how any verbiage in this bill that would go against the current model. I’m not Canadian but is the Canadian senate just the institution that rubber stamps and never really blocks anything like the US senate?
You'll have to watch and see!
the US senate is definitely not a rubber stamp. They are an important part of policy making, and have always been so.
@@kentucky4480 I worded it kinda of weird but I said asked if the Canadians senate blocks anything like the US senate does. sorry for the confusion.
@@kentucky4480 they are a rubber stamp. They only allow things that benefit them.

Thanks for the video
The little conversation you had with Jreg (the cameraman) on the way to the hearing was such a genuine moment of reflection on yourself and Canadian politics. Insightful and truthful
The people you hang out with are pretty lucky individuals, I must say
I think the premise of Bill C-11 is frankly dystopian. If something like that were to pass if I were living in Canada, I wouldn't mind taking it to the streets to stop it from being passed at all, much less with any amendments. Also, I'd expect a similar degree of protest from a portion of the country. Any teenagers and young adults hearing about this bill should feel concerned.
I'm Filipino but I do share the same opinion on Bill C-11. I mean if I were forced by the government to watch Ang Probinsiyano, Eat Bulaga, and literally none else, I'd be pissed myself
As a now Polish American who remembers Polish content from the 90s, I understand your point of view lol
As a Filipino Canadian, Ang probinsiyano is the most stupidest show I’ve seen.
Does that mean all those popular "How To" videos that are so helpful to viewers get pushed to the bottom of your search?

Go ahead and fact check the date) it was decided that we needed to boost viewership of Canadian content on TV (long before the internet never mind UA-cam), and so various regulations were setup to do that, the most prominent being:
1) Broadcasters were forced to show a certain percentage of "Canadian content", and
2) A fund was setup to finance the creation of new "Canadian content".
Senators should fight for Senate reform. Ridiculous that Alberta only haa 6 senators and NB has 10. Each province should have an equal amount
