I'm so glad I have found your videos! I watched tons of other pronunciation videos before, but none has helped me understand as much as yours. In this one especially, with the ''r'' sound, I'm a native French speaker, so when I saw that that the ''r'' sound was pronounced like our ''j'', I first thought, ''oh, that's easy!'', but then, I was seeing people pronounce it completely differently and thus it had me very confused, and I didn't really see anyone explain this until I found your video! So a big thank you! :)
I also watched your video about the tones and it has really helped me as well, I had seen other videos but your explanation is the one that really stuck with me the best. I'm definitely going to be watching your other content, thank you for sharing all of this with all of us!
Thank you for the positive feedback... I really appreciate it and hope you enjoy studying Chinese with us! 😊

Good thing you make "Jacques" or 'J' in French as an example as I know French lol

oh, thank you so much, it was a good explanation and very well differentiated the very similar sound of the initials. I particularly must put high effort when I pronounce the "zhi", or "zhe", and it gets harder when you find it consecutively in a phrase or word.

That "r" sound is a piece of cake to pronounce for us Brazilians (and of course Portuguese people) because it's our normal sound for "j" besides "g" before "e" and "i".
An advantage for Brazilian students of Mandarin!
Indeed!
so r is actually j - that's confusing for me
@@thelastofthehitachi972 Relax, it's just a convention. That's the way the guys when were building the system chose how to represent the sound. It could have been any other letter...
My guess is that they didn't know the Portuguese or any similar sounds and ended up picking a random letter for such representation. Ultimately, what is important is the sound itself.
thanks a lot!
Thanks!

Hi, there~ Great job. However I don't quite understand why all the pinyins are pronounced very short like glottal stop. Foreign learners might misunderstand that all the Chinese characters have short vowel sounds. In fact we don't talk like that. If you prolong every word a little bit, learners will hear clearly how the vowel in that word is pronounced. ~嗨~視頻製作的很棒,不過不太懂為什麼要把拼出來的中文字唸得短促且斷然? 像-- 吃! 日!熱! 這樣老外會不會誤以為中文字發音都是短母音? 事實上我們講中文時字音有長有短,如果示範時將母音稍微拉長,讓外國人聽清楚裡面的母音到底怎麼發的,這樣就更棒了😁😉
I don't want to learn Mandarin now, but I think it will be good if I know how to pronounce silabes when I start to learn. I try to sing my favorite songs through pinyin ... Brazilian Fan here

Hello! I really love these videos :) I am also practicing with the pinyin chart on your website... However sometimes the chart pronounces ri like the English way to say it.. Does it sometimes change? Or is this chart wrong? It does this for "rùn" and "ruí"
There are slight variations in the way 'r' is pronounced from region to region in China. Try to match the pronunciation on the chart for 'standard' Mandarin, but be prepared to hear people pronounce these sounds with different accents!
we got this guys stay strong
You can do this! Anyone can learn to make these sounds - it just take practice! 💪🚀

r feels super breath-heavy compared to the other initials. I could actually feel that when saying rì(and I sorta sound like a lawn mower. Hopefully I am doing this right
teacher, i always wondering.. in the situations when chinese people having dialogue and they speak fast or when chinese people listening to song, and in the sentence there are words which :
1. we can't differentiate the tones and there are words with exactly same pronounciation but have different tones thus have totally different meanings. (example : mǎi and mài)
2. we can't differentiate the pronounciation clearly (ex : zhi and zhe that sounds alike)
3. words with same pronounciation but have different meaning as if it was that word only and if it was combined with other word. (example : zhe (this) and zhe zhi (origami))
do chinese people EVER MISTOOK the word??? if not, HOW COME???
sometimes when I listening to chinese songs, I listen to the lyrics and I was sure it was a certain word with certain meaning. But when I look up at the real lyrics, turn out I was wrong. (it was actually other word with same pronounciation but different tones, thus different meaning)
i want to learn chinese but this is make me frustrated. and i want to know if this happen to chinese people too?
can you give me tips please, teacher?
These are great questions! You've got to check out this hangout I did about how Chinese people ACTUALLY speak... it really gets into how the language sounds when people speak fast, as people naturally do! ua-cam.com/video/xWU41tIdrvU/v-deo.html
Definitely it happens!Depending on the songs and the singers, like Jay Zhou's songs , it would be difficult for most of the Chinese. So I suggest you focus on the stander conversation . For the songs , just enjoy them , do not take it too seriously.

Whether Chinese language has "root word" concept, to frame new words from root word, prefix and suffix?
There is root word concept, in English.
eg
re + build = rebuild
It means, "build again".
psych + iatry = psychiatry
It means, "Medical study of mind (psych)"
psych + o + logy = psychology
It means, "Study of mind (psych)"
Yes! Actually when you study Chinese characters you see how they fit together like building blocks, so that with just a few 'root characters' you can form a TON of new characters and compound words, and even potentially understand words you've never seen before. Learn more about the magic of root characters here: bit.ly/2Yk0OF8

Is the chinese "r" in er as in "daughter" nü er the same as the American r?
If I'm understanding your question correctly, the "er" sound in 女儿 (nǚ'ér) is very similar to the english word "daughter", although the Chinese sound is a bit more like "are" than the "er" sound in "daughter". One thing you might find really helpful is to spend some time with our interactive Pinyin chart. It has audio and video demonstrations for every sound, with each tone, so you can really focus in on the sounds you find most challenging: goo.gl/h7hd42
Thanks so much for the quick response! I now see my question was worded unnecessarily confusing.
I've seen a lot of warnings NOT to pronounce r as in 人 with an English r but more like a j as in "Juliette". But then 儿 sounds almost exactly like "are" and I wanted to make sure those are indeed two different sounds. The interactive chart is amazing and just answered my question! Thanks!
I love that I could help, and that you're getting into the interactive Pinyin chart. Focusing on your pronunciation and tones in the beginning really is your foundation for the rest of your Mandarin studies, so keep it up! Also, have fun with it and don't get discouraged. Trust that if you study a little bit everyday, you'll be able to make progress and master this language. In 6 months, the things that are challenging now will seems so easy and natural, and you'll have all new aspects of the language to conquer!

How to pronounce Renjun?
😂😂😂 i've been wondering about the same thing lol
I am Zhrrr, ruler of the planet Omicron Persei 8.
How can you say "i" doesn't represent a sound, I clearly hear a vowel in zhi, especially in first tone. It is very similar to ı sound in Turkish.
Hello Ahmet! This video is showing that when the pinyin final “i” is paired with these seven pinyin initials, it is NOT pronounced the same as when it is paired with other pinyin initials (like “b”, “q”, or “d"). In other words, the “i” in “zhi” is just a place holder and is NOT voiced as the “i" in “bi”. Hope that helps! 😊
@@YoyoChinese Thanks for the answer. Though I still hear an "ə" sound, as far as I understand, the "zh, ch, sh" initials are voiced when your mouth is wide open, so the "ə" vowel is considered a natural continuation of these initials.
Ah, so the "e" final can indeed be used in combination with the initials "zh", "ch" & "sh"; and it sounds very similar to the "ə" sound you mention. For example: 车 (chē, car). But that pronunciation is not the same as 吃 (chī, eat), which is pronounced exactly the same as how we pronounce the "ch" initial on its own.
Be sure to check out our Interactive Pinyin Chart for a very helpful way to learn and practice every pinyin initial, final & combination! bit.ly/3tuVxJa 😊
0:52 Actually, 中国 means "middle country"
I think you should say 中國 if it’s “China”. And if I’m right 中 means “middle” if it stands alone (without 國).
