- This is a belt driven iris designed and built by myself. The mechanism is made from laser cut aluminium for the frame, the gear paddles are 3d printed and the blades are 0.25mm lexan.
Unscheduled offworld activation
Close the iris!

It is Code of sg 1

Aaron Cook: LmDfAo, Thank you, your comment made my day 😂😂😂. I was just starting to look through the comments to figure out if anyone else had a problem with the whole "Mechanical iris window shade EXPLAINED" title, and low and behold, there you were, brightening my day with a well deserved chuckle.
On a side note, that SG1 iris is spectacular. Awesome job, however, I would have loved a "Detailed Explanation" of how he made it........ and by that I mean "not" another video of him disassembling it further with 0 audio to actually "Explain" How it was made and what materials were used etc.
Just pause the video and enjoy the motion blur.
Can you make one about 15 feet wide from a titanium-trinium alloy?
Nope. Trinium isn't a real mineral.
But it can be pure titanium like the one they used back before they discovered trinium.
Forget it, TV is rubbish and they lie. I tried it at home and the buggers still get through the stargate.
My iris works fine but. My gates connection keeps cutting out mid traveller incoming
@@VestedUTuber Next you are gonna tell me Naqadah isn't real?

I mean, it could exist. It doesn't, but it could. The properties of that stuff (extremely high density, usefulness as a capacitor, radioactivity) suggest that it's a superheavy element in the island of stability, with an atomic number in the 200s.
Thought you might find that interesting to make up for my missing the point a year ago.
Great design, really creative to use the gear drive instead of a traditional system. Looks like you get faster operation and less space required for the mechanics.
Thank you for this demonstration! I’ve been racking my brain trying to find simple solutions to make a large iris close quickly.
Coolyo. Thats amazing.
This is the best mechanical way for my stargate-model.
Why would you make something like this and then not paint it to look like a stargate?
The Wife probably wouldn't let him
Yeah, it'd be a nightmare having to fix the hole at the back of it
Clearly a portal to another dimension.
I'm noticing a common theme in your house decor choices...
INCOMING WORMHOLE...
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha thats what i was thinking :D
"unauthorized wormhole activation" ..... 'Close the iris!"
I read the title as "Irish Window"
I failed myself
I read your comment as "Irish Widow"

@@DUIofPhysics I read your username as The Altoid Sherbert. I failed myself.
I needed explanations like this when I was younger.. gotten into so much trouble trying to understand how my toys worked lol
😉😂😂😂
That's just beautiful in so many ways!
This is sweeet!
P.S. I thought my neighbours were fighting until I turned up the audio.
Scared, I just dropped my headphones... LOL
I like explanations with words
They are for the weak

The video is meant to be inclusive towards hearing impaired people.
TremereTT that's what subtitles are for.
It's SG-1 IDC code
Open the Iris
I LITERALLY THOUGHT IT WAS STARGATE!! hahaha
Welcome back sergeant michael
thanks Simon for your cad files. You're great !
Close the Iris!!
That's beautiful. Nicely done.
I like it wish all houses had this in them!
So cool. From this it is pretty easy to build.
to all you guys moaning about how he didnt explain anything
its really simple he uses a drive belt to move cogs which have the iris parts attached to them
and he added one more coq that has a round knob on it so when he turns the knob the drive belt turns all
the other cogs which opens or closes the iris depending on the direction you turn
if you want make something similar just google template for mechanical iris and you will find a lot of templates
Stargate ftw
I like how the window shade works
Now I need a front door with a round window! Thanks a lot!
That idea must be worth millions
I like how he just took off the panel without and explanation and I go "ooooooooh".
Nice.
Wow!_____thank you so much!
That intelligent art machine.
That's absolutely fantastic!
Innovative and very well designed.
All I can say is: WOW! I have wanted to make one of these for a while, and yours has to be one of the best ones I've seen. How long did it take to make?
I think I misunderstood your explanation. Could you try again using simpler words?
If picture is a thousand words and this video is 30fps then we have a 3000 word explanation. (Honestly if this video doesn't explain the mechanism you've no chance)
Very very cool! Thanks for explaining.
38/5000
Just genius! Thanks a lot for this!
Simple yet beautiful
I have seen models made with engines and 3d printing of the Stargate, adding this made with aluminum would be incredible! !!! :) :) :)
so that's how the stargate shield was made
Really realy good job, Bravo. And i want to thank you special for to share also CAd files... Thanks Man...
Simple yet brilliant
I feel like this channel is toying with my emotions.
Great job.....
This is called passion........
Using this as reference for my 3d printed Stargate with working Iris :D
Gracias Simon !! Es una maravilla, thank you !!
... Well this just raises further questions!
you sir are a master.
nice. and sooo simple. thx for sharing
Beautiful, great job
WELL DONE, CONGRATS
Stunning.
Wow, that is a nice one!
Very Cool!!!!

Hi, this is the coolest thing ever! I am an industrial design student in Seattle, is there anyway you would be willing to share the rhino or cad file?
So nice!
Stargate window shade
I would love to see a CAD file of this. Thinking of making a smaller version as an automated pet door...
The fastest lens diaphragm, which with you can freeze positrons
Not really an explanation as much as a brief show of use.
+Anton Ymer It's pretty obvious how it works.
+Slizzard73 No, not really.
Eric Seven Well then you're just stupid. No other way to say it.
We can't all be geniuses, Slizzard73 . Thank goodness the world has you.
Eric Seven The fuck do you want me to do? If you can't see what's going on that's your problem.
Excellent
Thank you very much.
Could more "divisions" (presently you have 16) make the iris open/close faster???
... like, in a blink of an eye?
This is amazingly cool, but I have to ask: what's the point if it isn't actually opaque? It seems to me you could have made something both cool and functional just as easily.
good job sir
well, it explained a lot
CLOSE THE IRIS
They're single eye brows placed in a circle overlapping each other.
Pretty cool
How did you calculate the geometry of the blades?
For fucks sake, it's not that complicated of a mechanism, if you don't get it from the video I'm sorry for you.
I want this for my wormhole
Beautifully made! The only thing I don't understand, why is it translucent?
Maybe he have some too bright light problem and just want to attenuate it a little, I have a skylight and use a blue glass to have a cold and relaxing light.
Dude you need to print a stargate for your door. : ]
Have you got the STL's uploaded anywhere i would love to make one. Very cool
Nostromo ventilation ducts...
*bad things came through those irises...*
So what's the big thing you were setting it on - are you making a door-sized one of these? :D
its not a table or a door its just the floor
uhhh use your eyes and you will see it is not the floor
So this is how a manual SLR camera aperture works.
This is so awesome. I've made a few in CAD but can't figure out how to make the geometry of the petals correctly. Any advice on how to design the petals? Used the iris calculator online but would like to do it myself.
Nice pocket Stargate!
Hmmm nice explanation
great, now i can make doors in my RV

Hi,
I'm a student in cabinetmaking, and i'm working on a project for a photograph. I had the idea of making an openner with an iris and i saw your window iris. Which is pretty cool ! Is there any ways you share me the plan of it. Like with the dimensions .... Actually it's for the blades that i'm having issues...
Hi Gregoire, I have placed some cad files in a Dropbox folder. you can use this link to access them.
You might have to copy and past link if it doesn't work from here!

Hope you find them helpfull:-)
Simon
Thanks!
People complaining abou the guy not talking to explain it.
If the guy was talking, he would say "and as you can see" lol
I'd like to see a mechanical cat iris window
I want to make one of these with my 3D printer however I'm limited cuz I have the mini V2 not much of a build area to make anything so if I can find a way to build them Iris like yours and I have to be size of coffee or cigarette tray
can i find the cost of this mechanism of same size
Looks like 6mm fiberglass timing belt... i think I could make something like this...
nice .
hi, cool iris :) am working on a smoke canon shutter and would be very thankful if you could share the cad files.
Jack O`Neill like this
Thanks
We want a metal one.
Aperture Laboratories...creators of the Portal Device.
Cale and refreshments will be served after the test.
It looks like cleaning it might be a real chore, lol.
Hello. I'm attempting to build this from scratch, but I'm having some trouble finding the diameter of the outside circle as well as the inside hole. Is there some place where I can get that information?
Great project! What is the Belt's type and size?
oh the shade-
Where's the explanation?
Hi Simon,
I am working on my final year engineering project and I really like your design because the mechanism doesn't take a great amount of space! Would you mind sharing your drawings with me?
Thanks
there is in fact a Dropbox link to access cad files in a comment below! feel free to download and use!
Oh yeah! Thanks Simon! Do you think it would work with 0.9 mm Stainless steel Blades?
thanks
Hi, I am looking for someone to create a similar iris for me. Any contact?
