Interesting contrast in personalities. One guy is a super thoughtful, smart, observant guy who practices martial arts with humility and honor, and the questioner is a douche with cynical, half baked opinions presented in the guise of questions who wears his pursuit of the martial arts as a fashion statement. I feel bad that Danaher had to go through that. That was painful.
porra, this guy who was interview this guy has a lot of respect for, heligion, for a the gi and got no hespect for those heefer addicts at tench planet.
I love John Danaher!!!!!!!! He's an amazing coach, and Renzo Gracie's Academy is amazing! Danaher teaches some of the best MMA fighters and I can't wait to see more students enter the UFC from his tutelage.
Not the brightest interviewer but John Danaher is awesome! It's easy to see why so many good guys seek coaching from him even though he hasn't competed. He understands grappling, not just jiu jitsu in a way I'm sure not many people do.
This guy is as articulate and knowledgeable as they get. I love how the interviewer keeps looking for black and white answers but John is way to wise to get trapped and always answer grey. While the interviewer will probably seem annoying to most people, I think he was simply candid, Danaher recognized that and was patient in his answers.
Even though he wasn't asking the worlds most intelligent questions, it's always good to hear someone like John Donahue talk about the more basic issues in jiu jitsu, great at putting things in perspective
Despite his lack of history in competition, I've always found him to be an engaging interviewee. He's very knowledgeable and articulate, so I'd imagine a private lesson with him would be very interesting. He's definitely someone with whom I'd have a pint after class, and just let him do the talking
good to see John tell the guy with the mic that he disagrees with his thoughts on youtube. basically there's information out on youtube and this guy says don't look at it. and john knows obviously not all of it is bad. you can't just ignore information if some of it can be helpful. that's the definition of being close-minded.
Actually, I thought that was a pretty good interview.... I thought the "Gi / No Gi" question was thought provoking and the "different levels of black belt" line of thinking is worth talking about. And Danaher seams like a Bond villain. Count me as one of those thumbs up.
the interviewer may have not been the brightest, but he did conduct a fun interview, it was more like a chat , so it was enjoyable, but yes, Danaher my respects he is an amazing human.
I would just tell them not to try and teach, youtube has certainly helped me understand possibilities. Nothing wrong with watching matches and immersing yourself in the culture as grappling steals your heart.
@RodneyjSalinas absolutely agree, frank was a way stronger, fitter man than renzo at the time and in no gi there wouldnt be much difference in the grappling level. With strikes involved renzo was at a distinct advantage.
+retardno002 no, it is not freestyle wrestling. It is something on its own and was founded at the same time BJJ came up. They had submissions , they have a refined system of leg locks.
Danaher is great. The interviewer needs to seriously re-evaluate some of his stances. For instance: telling new students to stay off of UA-cam. Would a Professor of History tell new students to stay away from history programming? Not only do I believe all students, new and experienced, should be watching videos in-between classes, but it should be mandated. That said, is it possible that a student with a bad attitude and insufficient ability to tell good info from bad becomes negatively influenced by videos? Yes, just like a student of history shouldn't be supplementing their classroom education by subscribing to Illuminati Conspiracy videos and bringing bad information back to class. But if the instructor can turn a student on to the right information, it can be incredibly beneficial. For instance, when I have taught Judo classes, I constantly referred to legendary Olympic Judoka Koga because his techniques had a large influence over me. So why not tell students, "Hey, in between training, you should really check out Koga's 'A New Wind' video on UA-cam" or something else that I as instructor liked. Practice time isn't for thinking, it's for absorbing and drilling. It is largely a physical endeavor. But you HAVE to think about the art/sport in between classes, and that's where watching videos (good ones) can help. A new student will come back to class with renewed enthusiasm, and maybe some questions.
GuitargasmicWizardry I agree with all that, but the interviewer didn't really approach the topic with an open mind. It's also a matter of accepting reality - nobody is staying off of UA-cam. 100% guaranteed your students will check out videos, so you can either guide them to watching the good stuff, or let them wander into crap like Submissions 101.
WFerraro I agree with the opinion of Danaher on this. I think it's great if a white belt looks up armbars defense and escape videos (like I did), but he probably shouldn't look up bicep slicer/berimbolo when he doesn't master more basic stuff.
@poehzler What are you talking about, this was a great interview from an knowledgeable interviewer, what do you want, "So off topic, whats the last film you saw in the cinema?"
@jammin1881 I envy you sir! You're lucky and must also be quite talented too. On an unrelated note, John Danaher should be interviewed or recorded everyday lol. :D
Maynard James Keenan episode... YOU NEED TO HOLD YOUR LEFT HAND HIGHA, CHIN TUCKED, SHOULDERS UP, MOVE TO YOUR RIGHT SIDE...IF HES THROWING THE LEFT FIRST DUCK UNDA THEN GO FOR A SINGLE Powerful John Danaher
danaher says it best, use what works. gi/nogi its all useful if you find what works i do have to say that belts seem to cause ego and distinction problems. a belt here means a badass and a belt over here isnt so great. i like just growing and getting better without reaching for something. but hey, i only trained gi for a month years ago so i dont really know. regardless, danaher is truly a philosophy/bjj master
Great to hear Danaher speak. Truly amazing to listen to him speak. That Interviewer pissed me off with his comments about the Renzo and Frank Shamrock fight. Overall, this was a great listen.
interviewer should ask a question, not state is opinion and then kind of expect Danaher to interpret the question. Nobody gives a fuck what the interview thinks - it's not you're job bro. Nobody except your parents and your aunt watch this video for your contribution - we're here to hear the sharpest mind in jiu jitsu talk.
by the way when ur interviewing someone its because we want to hear what they have to say on certain issues and they have a certain stature that makes their opinion important.. no one wants to hear the interviewers opinion....start a radio show or something if thats what u wana do and talk about ur opinion
i would have thought a black belt would be able to beat a normal guy in a street fight, especially if they cross train. i was a green belt with those two stripes (i can't remember if those stripes have a name) in judo and did a little boxing years a go until my early teens and i can smoke any normal person, but i don't think i could beat someone who trains any MA now and definitely not a bbj cross training black belt!!!
Wow Danaher is really educated. Very refrshing to see an outright intellectual in the sport. Sorry to say but there are alot of dummies in MMA currently.
WHy is the interviewer is arrogant and close minded. The shit he says about 10th planet and youtube instructions was quickly shutdown by Danaher. Danaher sounds like a university professor when he talks, love his hearing him talk, he should write a book
stay off youtube? in my bjj school your encouraged to research different passes and submissions and sweeps on ur own time and then u can pass it on to other ppl in the class run it by the instructor so he can show you the finer points of it.. the key to improving is an open mind...
I didn't think 10th planet claims to be purely brazilian jiu jitsu, nothing wrong with adopting their belt system. Surely the system will do just fne at high level. What kind of dumb question is that..it's submission grappling. Who cares.
@b5e5n1n9y86 if it was a great interview from a knowledgeable interviewer then then interviewer wouldn't have been so biased or opinionated. ask yourself, who is being interviewed after all ? we want john's insights and opinions. not the interviewer.
Hes probably top 1-2 coach in world
His mind is on another level ,when doing mma
i respect this man alot
i wish i can meet him one day
This guy asked some great questions - very good interview, informative as well. Keep it up!
Leave the interviewer alone. He did a good job
porra, this guy who was interview this guy has a lot of respect for, heligion, for a the gi and got no hespect for those heefer addicts at tench planet.
John Danaher is a brilliant, brilliant man. Listening to him talk is such a pleasure.
I love John Danaher!!!!!!!! He's an amazing coach, and Renzo Gracie's Academy is amazing! Danaher teaches some of the best MMA fighters and I can't wait to see more students enter the UFC from his tutelage.

Very intelligent and succinct responses from Danaher. Nice interview
Why is everyone hating on Keanu Reeves?
Yeah, take it easy on the guy. Somebody just killed his puppy, afterall.
Such intelligent man Danaher is!! It would be an honor to meet him in real life!
John Danaher is a very intelligent man.
Even though he wasn't asking the worlds most intelligent questions, it's always good to hear someone like John Donahue talk about the more basic issues in jiu jitsu, great at putting things in perspective
*Danaher
I am literally retarded
Ladies & Gentleman I like your name. Is Louie your dad?
dumb interviewer.
@LeashtheCanadian - Amen. Been at Renzo's 7 years. Learnt a lot through John & all the coaches there.
Danaher always comes across as super intellectual guy that is never condescending or pompous no matter who he is talking to. He's great.
Despite his lack of history in competition, I've always found him to be an engaging interviewee. He's very knowledgeable and articulate, so I'd imagine a private lesson with him would be very interesting. He's definitely someone with whom I'd have a pint after class, and just let him do the talking

This man is one of the best in the world, go the Kiwis!
I like hearing GSP training in the background!
Actually, I thought that was a pretty good interview.... I thought the "Gi / No Gi" question was thought provoking and the "different levels of black belt" line of thinking is worth talking about. And Danaher seams like a Bond villain. Count me as one of those thumbs up.
I'd have to argue that Marcelo Garcia has his piece of bjj marketshare pie in NYC.. Didn't know Renzo owned it.
the interviewer may have not been the brightest, but he did conduct a fun interview, it was more like a chat , so it was enjoyable, but yes, Danaher my respects he is an amazing human.
Delariva didn't invent that guard, it was used in judo long before...and it's the same for many many techniques that the brazilians suposedly invented
the interviewer needs to keep his opinions to himself, not surprised he's under a Gracie with his old fashioned view even though it's Carlson.
Man no wonder they call this guy hanniball lector... he's like an evil genius
I would just tell them not to try and teach, youtube has certainly helped me understand possibilities. Nothing wrong with watching matches and immersing yourself in the culture as grappling steals your heart.
The interviewer needs to learn how to not give his dumb opinions and just ask the questions.
Hi
@RodneyjSalinas absolutely agree, frank was a way stronger, fitter man than renzo at the time and in no gi there wouldnt be much difference in the grappling level. With strikes involved renzo was at a distinct advantage.
No Gi already existed back in Brasil , it is Luta Livre.
+cōsimō Luta Livre literally means Free Fight which would translate to Freestyle Wrestling. They didn't have submissions. Not the same thing.
+retardno002 no, it is not freestyle wrestling. It is something on its own and was founded at the same time BJJ came up. They had submissions , they have a refined system of leg locks.

great interview

***** That would be great. I'm currently training BJJ under Vitor Shaolin, also an amazing instructor.
Yeah, right in back of Times Square.

interviewer actually calls bjj "traditional" jiujitsu... hm... i thought traditional jiujitsu is japanese jiujitsu.
danaher says it best, use what works.
gi/nogi its all useful if you find what works

He was probably thinking "should I put him to sleep, before he put's me to sleep with this rubbish interview?"
He should be a model
Great to hear Danaher speak. Truly amazing to listen to him speak. That Interviewer pissed me off with his comments about the Renzo and Frank Shamrock fight. Overall, this was a great listen.
I thought this was a great interview, and the interviewer's questions were very relevant.
I feel like he wanted to bait danaher into saying “leg lock is the next big thing” w some of his questions
The look Danaher was giving him sometimes. lol.
this guy us is a fucking genius. JRE! x _ o
he finally shaved his head

John Danaher was born in a sweatguard
John Danaher is a genius. End of story.

wow, way to dis Frank Shamrock, show some respect to Frank.
He is a great grappler at his time.
shonie carter!
TOO LONG QUESTIONS DAWG
I didn't think 10th planet claims to be purely brazilian jiu jitsu, nothing wrong with adopting their belt system. Surely the system will do just fne at high level. What kind of dumb question is that..it's submission grappling. Who cares.
Thank god he cut that hair
besides de la riva and tornado guard there haven't been improvements? ugh...
@b5e5n1n9y86
if it was a great interview from a knowledgeable interviewer then then interviewer wouldn't have been so biased or opinionated. ask yourself, who is being interviewed after all ? we want john's insights and opinions. not the interviewer.
Terrible interviewer. Made me cringe.
Sure, but he asked some solid questions that allowed John to give us deep answers. Appreciate, don't hate.
8 yeas later Danaher did some good things off “UA-cam”, the guy fucked up lol
they guy is creepy. no wonder they call him Hannibal Lecter
He shouldn't have shaved his head !
too much bias here, interviewer seems really concerned and wrapped up in the "nationalism" surrounding fight schools.
Speak in generalities much
Wow this interviewer is terrible. I bet he’s so annoying to train bjj with. Offering his unwarranted opinions any chance he gets.
