- There's a new twist to an old email scam and the scam is exploding. Scammers are using artificial intelligence voices to mimic loved ones. It's an attempt to play on the heartstrings of unsuspecting victims who may believe a friend or family member needs help.

You would think just talking to someone normally about personal stuff, you'd realize quickly it wasn't them.
Usually the scam calls are panicky and demand money immediately to get you to not talk about the personal stuff. I could see a lot of elderly people getting taken in by this because "it sounded just like him/her"

The best thing to do is tell them you will call them back and use your contacts to radial.

Neither do I. I listen to voice mail - most of the calls are hang-ups, a sure sign they're just trying to sell me something or they're scammers trying to con me.

I got a message a while ago from my grandmother. She's in L.A. County Jail and needs bail money. The people who run the jail don't show any mercy. I never did meet my grandmother as she died before I was even born. At least that's what my mother told me. If she's not deceased, the jail is now holding my poor grandma in lockup. Don't they realize she's 124 years old?
2:36 when I was like 5 my mom told me a codeword to use for situations like this... I've never told it to anybody and I'll never forget it. Maybe I need to check up on her to make sure she still remembers it. haha.

How simple is it to just NOT ANSWER THE DAMN PHONE if you don't recognize the number of it shows as unidentified? If it's someone you know or if it's a true urgent call they'll leave a voicemail. If the voicemail is suspicious, call the caller at the number YOU have for them, not one that they leave.
the moment you hear they need money, don’t panic, just hang up! See? Easy as that! If they say he or she is your family or loved ones, hang up and verify it with other family members or mutual friends or just call the person they pretend to be from your phone to their real number, the number you have in your contacts list.
Hey, if they would have wanted everyone calm they would have told us the common sense you did. Now panic like they suggested!
Yes.. but sometimes they pretend that they are in jail or being held hostage and can only talk once.. and they will say they are going to be hurt unless they get the money. These people think of and try everything.
@@patr70 doesn’t matter if that was the case , when you call the real person they pretend to be, the real person would have answered and if no one answered you can ask other family members or mutual friends to contact the real person. You can easily verify the situation fast, people fell for it because they panicked on the spot and that is exactly what scammers are counting on.
@@patr70 if they say they are in jail or hospital, its even easier to verify. Just ask which city police department’s jail hospital name. Then hang up and call the police department or hospital’s real numbers to verify.

He tells me we have no Walmarts in this country..

You need to establish passwords with all your loved ones to establish their identity now. I.e. ask them an obscure question about their youth.

Agreed...so many people have told me they didn't leave a message because i don't have a greeting...I just disregard. If it's really that important, people can just text you FFS.

Who said the call was coming from a no caller ID? Spoofing a phone number is trivial in 2023, there are pages of search results for commercial companies that will help you spoof numbers for a nominal fee. The call comes in from your loved ones phone number, it sounds like your loved one. Guess what most people expect in that situation?
The reality of deep fakes is you can no longer trust any interaction with another person that does not take place physically in person.

Um.... It should be pretty obvious within minutes of a conversation that something isn't right. If it isn't obvious then you don't know the other person very well at all, and they wouldn't be calling you.
From my Mom, Me, My daughter and my grandson, we have a code word for financial emergency help. If it gets used we change it to a new one! It works for us!
"Grandpa, I've just called to remind me of the codeword... I wrote it down somewhere and forgot where I put it..."
"Sure thing, it's 'apple'."
"Gosh thanks, gramps... 'apple', great...OK, bye for now, gotta run...."

or you all can get something like cash app and have everyone verified/setup so even if someone gets fooled, the money would only go to the real family member
What if the voice they mimic is someone who stole money from you in the past and you say no
You can go even further by writing and mailing code words so they're never spoken on the phone. overkill? - maybe.
Tech companies will learn to deal with this, those that do will be rewarded.

Who just sends people money without calling the person 1st to verify??
Just an idea but have an emergency code word within your family so if they call you for money you can verify its really them. Just don't give out that code word to anyone else.
I told my parents about this a couple years ago when I first saw some of these voice clones, I knew this would be coming. Said to ask questions that only I would know if there was ever a suspicious call like this. Even then it's not foolproof

The way to stop it is to simply ask the person some personal questions no one else would know. Problem solved. Otherwise, as PT Barnum famously said, There's a sucker born every minute.

I've had this happen to me twice. The first time it was "grandpa, this is your grandson". The caller needed money and I said a name of one of my grand children but that child was only 3 years old. When I told the caller, he cussed me out. The second time was just a few months ago. The same type of call but i h used a name and I had just talked to this grand son and he was in a city far from the one the caller said he was in. Each time I was cussed out and they hang up. All of my children and grand children know not to call me about being bailed out of a jam. I've told them NO.....

Everyone I talk to on a regular basis knows that I don't answer unknown numbers. They also know I use Do Not Disturb and have it set to only allow contacts to ring through. They further know to leave a message if I don't answer and will block the number they called from if they don't.🤷🏼♂️
How do they know the contact info of relatives of a voice they harvested?
Perhaps they check social media contacts. Facebook shows a list of friends if you're foolish to have your account open for anybody and everybody to see. You can try to "close" it and keep it private to just your friends and family - yeah, good luck with that. That's why I quit FB more than 2 years ago, got tired of all the crap. My family knows the best way to reach me is through email and if they want to talk to me on the phone, we arrange a date and time for a call. If they email me, I know their email addresses by heart and it's easy enough to check a suspect email address when a suspicious email appears in your inbox or spam box.

I told my brother that in the event he's in Europe and I got a phone call saying that he's in trouble, he's on his own 👻
So, you contact your friend or loved one on the phone and say "did you send?" How easy is that to overcome?
Just say a dead relative stopped by and can help out. that will trip them up.

THE SIMPLE SOLUTION IS TO MAKE UP CODE NAMES OR STREET NAMES AND SHARE THEM SECRETLY, VERBALLY IF POSSIBLE IN EACH OTHER'S PRESENCE.
I ASK PHONE SCAMMERS CLAIMING THEY ARE IN THE UK WHAT IS THE NEAREST TRAIN STATION, AND THEY GET ANGRY AND HANG UP.
If you send money without verifying the other person's identity, it's your fault.

I got scammed once. I was so little in my bank I wasted like an hour with them, and they gave up. 🤣

I wouldn’t trust any voicemails thar tell me they want money. I am also a tech nerd and so I am versed in AI technology and so if I would get a call like that I definitely would not believe it .
